Book excerpt: None of us have insight into the challenges and experiences we will face along the path of life as we attempt to manage it and all its uncertainties that come with the package. Statistically, when uncertainties are the result of an imbalanced support system, exposure to drugs and crime, and a lack of positive male role models, the outcome is death or a long prison sentence. Alonzo Burns walks you through the highs and lows of his personal journey to escape the fast life and how he re-established himself on a path of productivity and relevance. He defies the notion that you have to be a product of your environment. Instead, he reveals how to use negative experiences as fuel to propel you into your destiny. Hold tight and prepare yourself for a "behind the scenes" look into his raw and uncut journey. "When I first encountered the street life, it was through observation. I was fascinated with the drug dealers' popularity, respect from the hood, the material things that followed, and all the females that threw themselves at the feet of them. As a young kid that was seeking and searching for a male role model, it was easy to get sucked into this type of lifestyle and that is exactly what happened." - From the Chapter: Street Life Expired Alonzo Burns is an ex-drug dealer who went from the street corner to Corporate America. He has years of experience as an IT technologist in Corporate America and is an entrepreneur that operates a real-estate investment company as well. His passion and focus are sharing his life experiences to the hopeless and forgotten to provide encouragement to fulfill dreams and aspirations.

Book excerpt: The essence of this book is to show how the town that William lives in, got him sectioned in 1989, simply for writing a couple of harmless letters. He asserts that when a female Muslim constituent stabbed her political representative in London, she was never given such draconian treatment, nor afforded any respect whatsoever when he was a well educated graduate. He goes on to add that continually hassled by a local criminal and his associates, something that he did everything humanly possible to avoid, by contacting doctors, social workers, the police, the chief executive of the council, he was one day seriously assaulted. An attempt at murder of to maim. The town stood by as he became ill, as he could not comprehend how someone who assaulted him could not be viewed as a danger to himself and to others. The police stood by, and amazingly those very same police officers were involved in his demise in 1997 for more draconian treatment. He adds that if he had not been ILLEGALLY removed in1989, he would never have suffered again in 1997, as the sheer awesome terror he suffered by brutal psychiatric staff, left him so fearful of standing up for himself, that he was unable to defend himself later in life. His psyche simply collapsed from the sheer terror of it all. Americans may like to know also how he, as a science graduate was denied lucrative employment in 1992 in a then booming world of computers. Politicians state that people need to get educated. William is living proof of just how the system works. He has been deprived of every freedom commensurate with the west, such as sex, children, cars, and the right to own your own home. The book spells it out as it is in 1984 Britain today, where accommodation is racketed. And for those that know nobody, get left to rot.

Book excerpt: Sean grew up impoverished in Baltimore's housing projects where he witnessed unspoken violence, murder, open-market drug dealing, and apathy. While he was able to evade the attractions of his immediate environment by studying and using school as a means of escape, it was inevitable that he and countless others ultimately became a product of the environment. At the age of 16, Sean begins his stint as a drug dealer and when his life began taking on an identity of its own. He was given the nickname "Slimmy" and school was no longer an option. Teaming up with Bodie, the notorious drug kingpin from "The Wire," Sean found himself knee-deep in the drug game and aligned with some of the city's premier gangsters. By the time he was 17, Sean had been arrested twice and shot in the stomach where he faced certain death. Just before his 18th birthday, he would be arrested for the third and final time as part of a larger city initiative to round up known drug dealers including Bodie, Ronnie Moe, and Vitto, my "rap buddies." Sean was handed a ten-year sentence and would not see the streets again until he was 21. Upon his release, Sean understood that prison wasn't where he wanted to spend his life. He clearly understood that he had been given a second chance at life and he was going to take advantage of the opportunity. Armed with just a prison-earned G.E.D Sean would spend his next two decades proving to the sentencing judge, society and himself that one is not and should not be limited by his/her past. Sean just didn't defeat the odds, he actually denied the odds. He would go onto land employment with corporate firms as a web technology leader and often supervising small teams where he was the only minority and the only non-degree holder. While at Lockheed Martin, Sean received a number of performance awards including The President's Award. He later joined a marketing firm where he spearheaded the development of the web department that he ultimately grew into a 2 million-dollar business. This book will modify your thinking and perceptions of ex-cons, and what can be achieved when given the opportunity to do so. Though the odds were stacked up against him, Sean's commitment, drive and family support allowed him to overcome the stereotypical persona of an ex-con and achieve what many may see as unthinkable. Based on statistics, Sean should be dead or incarcerated with a hefty sentence but either was an option for him but defeating the odds was!

Book excerpt: Foreword by Kim Kardashian West The true-life story of the woman whose life sentence for non-violent drug trafficking was commuted by President Donald Trump thanks to the efforts of Kim Kardashian West—an inspiring memoir of faith, hope, mercy, and gratitude. How do you hold on to hope after more than twenty years of imprisonment? For Alice Marie Johnson the answer lies with God. For years, Alice lived a normal life without a criminal record—she was a manager at FedEx, a wife, and a mother. But after an emotionally and financially tumultuous period in her life left her with few options, she turned to crime as a way to pay off her mounting debts. Convicted in 1996 for her nonviolent involvement in a Memphis cocaine trafficking organization, Alice received a life sentence under the mandatory sentencing laws of the time. Locked behind bars, Alice looked to God. Eventually becoming an ordained minister, she relied on her faith to sustain hope over more than two decades—until 2018, when the president commuted her sentence at the behest of Kim Kardashian West, who had taken up Alice’s cause. In this honest, faith-driven memoir, Alice explains how she held on to hope and gave it to others, from becoming a playwright to mentoring her fellow prisoners. She reveals how Christianity and her unshakeable belief in God helped her persevere and inspired her to share her faith in a video that would go viral—and come to the attention of celebrities who were moved to action. Today, Alice is an icon for the prison reform movement and a humble servant who embraces gratitude and God for her freedom. In this powerful book, she recalls all of the firsts she has experienced through her activism and provides an authentic portrait of the crisis that is mass incarceration. Linking social justice to spiritual faith, she makes a persuasive and poignant argument for justice that transcends tribal politics. Her story is a beacon in the darkness of despair, reminding us of the power of redemption and the importance of making second chances count. After Life features 16 pages of color photographs.

Drawing on six years of fieldwork at a predominately white private university, their ethnography explores issues of deviance, race, and stratification in the US war on drugs.

With practical application and inspiration, Johnny Baker shares his story of recovering from alcoholism and offers the truths he has learned from his 25 years with Celebrate Recovery. Baker’s father, John, founded Celebrate Recovery when Baker was 15 years old. Later, Baker became involved with alcohol himself. Even though he saw his parents’ marriage heal and watched his dad become a new person, he had to experience his own journey of healing. Baker began the process of recovery as a young adult. Now he serves on the leadership team of Celebrate Recovery, sharing his testimony of how God brought him back home. In the years since leaving alcohol behind, Baker has witnessed thousands of other lives change through the power of Christ. Whether you are dealing with substance abuse, relational struggles, or eating challenges, or you simply want to let go of what is holding you back in life, you will find answers in The Road to Freedom. In addition to telling his own story, Baker offers ten principles of healing. These life lessons remind you that pain has a purpose, small and steady improvement lasts longer than overnight change, serving others leads to deeper healing, and facing your problems is the only way to heal. The Road to Freedom will help you move from coping with hurts, hang-ups, and habits to the hope and health that only Jesus can bring.

The book offers unique perspectives on the careers of Rita Hayworth and Judy Holliday, a discussion of Columbia's unique brands of screwball comedy and film noir, and analyses of such classics as The Awful Truth, Born Yesterday, and From Here to Eternity. Following the author's highly readable studio chronicle are fourteen original essays by leading film scholars that follow Columbia's emergence from Poverty Row status to world class, and the stars, films, genres, writers, producers, and directors responsible for its transformation. A new essay on Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood rounds out the collection and brings this seminal studio history into the 21st century. Chasin' Freedum is an informative, touching, and amusing story that provides not only details of Quawntay's brazen ingenious escapes, but also a glimpse into the mind and heart of an intriguingly wise fool whom the media has dubbed a ladies' man and escape artist as he desperately pursues freedom the wrong way. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freedom’s Ring begins with the question of how the American ideal of freedom, which so effectively defends a conservative agenda today, from globally exploitative free trade to anti-French “freedom fries” during the War in Iraq, once bolstered the progressive causes of Freedom Summer, the Free Speech Movement, and more militant Black Power and Women’s Liberation movements with equal efficacy. Focused as it is on the faring of freedom throughout the liberation era, this book also explores attempts made by rights movements to achieve the often competitive or cross-canceling American ideal of equality–economic, professional, and otherwise. Although many struggled and died for it in the civil rights era, freedoms such as the vote, integrated bus rides, and sex without consequences via the Pill, are ultimately free–costing officialdom little if anything to fully implement—while equality with respect to jobs, salaries, education, housing, and health care, will forever be the much more expensive nut to crack. Freedom’s Ring regards the politics of freedom, and politics in general, as a low-cost substitute for and engrossing distraction from substantive economic problem-solving from the liberation era to the present day.
