The aim of this book is simply to conduct pupils as far as the analysis and parsing of ordinary constructions, with the writer aiming to put forth a book that should serve as a means of grammatical drill consisting of a bare framework of instruction and a large body of really workable exercises. Chapters included in this book are: Analysis of Simple Sentences; Inflexion; Syntax: Analysis of Complex Sentences; and The Alphabet. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New English Grammar for Schools Being: Revised Edition of a Practical Grammar, of the English Language In the preparation of this treatise, the ever-recurring wants and requirements of the class-room have been kept constantly in view. The aim of the author has been to make a practical textbook - a useful manual for the learner, not a reference book for the learned. The whole plan of the work is in accordance with the educational doctrine that accuracy and facility in the use of language, both spoken and written, are the ends to be secured by the study of grammar: that to secure these ends, a thorough acquaintance with the elements, forms, structure, and laws of our mother tongue, is indispensable; and that a practical knowledge of these can be acquired only by patient, persistent exercise in the analysis and synthesis of syllables, words, and sentences. The author has endeavored to present the subject in a simple, concise, and perspicuous manner. He has purposely avoided the discussion of mere theories; preferring, rather, a plain didactic statement of his own views. Experience has taught him that such discussions serve only to confuse and discourage the beginner, and are of questionable utility to the advanced student. Neither the erudition of the teacher, nor the exhaustive completeness of the text-book used, can compensate for the lack of drill in the class-room. The distinguishing features of this treatise, to which special attention is invited, are the following: 1. The methodical arrangement and logical development of the subjects discussed. This book was released on 2017-03-18 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of good grammar is a skill that you can develop and use throughout your life. If you experience problems with grammar, you might try completing grammar exercises and testing yourself using the exercises available. It is quite possible to use grammar effectively without knowing the rules in a formal way. Generally, when there is a grammatical error a sentence will not read correctly. You do not always have to stop and think about whether a sentence contains a subject and a verb (or anything else). Repeated practice can help you better understand grammar by commonsense. A sentence as a collection of words aims to convey sense or meaning. It is formed according to the logic of grammar. Meaning flows from one sentence to the next. The simplest sentence consists only of a noun, a naming word, and a verb. Adjectives describe nouns while adverbs describe verbs. Verbs are expressed in tenses; past, present or future. Our grammar drill exercises follow a simple uncluttered format and aim to do wonders for kids. They also serve well as teaching tools for classroom teachers, parents and homeschoolers. Classroom teachers use our exercises to assess students' mastery of basic grammar skills, to give students extra practice, to teach new strategies, and to save precious planning time. Parents use our exercises to give their kids extra practice to enhance their English education. Homeschoolers use our exercises for homeschool education to develop and strengthen English skills in their kids. Our goal is to provide you with straightforward practice-oriented material that helps you build up a strong sense of English grammar.

Book Synopsis Language Between Description and Prescription by : Lieselotte Anderwald
Download or read book Language Between Description and Prescription written by Lieselotte Anderwald and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-06-02 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language Between Description and Prescription is an empirical, quantitative and qualitative study of nineteenth-century English grammar writing, and of nineteenth-century language change. Based on 258 grammar books from Britain and North America, the book investigates whether grammar writers of the time noticed the language changing around them, and how they reacted. In particular, Lieselotte Anderwald demonstrates that not all features undergoing change were noticed in the first place, those that were noticed were not necessarily criticized, and some recessive features were not upheld as correct. The features investigated come from the verb phrase and include in particular variable past tense forms, which -although noticed-often went uncommented, and where variation was acknowledged; the decline of the be-perfect, where the older form (the be-perfect) was criticized emphatically, and corrected; the rise of the progressive, which was embraced enthusiastically, and which was even upheld as a symbol of national superiority, at least in Britain; the rise of the progressive passive, which was one of the most violently hated constructions of the time, and the rise of the get-passive, which was only rarely commented on, and even more rarely in negative terms. Throughout the book, nineteenth-century grammarians are given a voice, and the discussions in grammar books of the time are portrayed. The book's quantitative approach makes it possible to examine majority and minority positions in the discourse community of nineteenth-century grammar writers, and the changes in accepted opinion over time. The terms of the debate are also investigated, and linked to the wider cultural climate of the time. Although grammar writing in the nineteenth century was very openly prescriptivist, the studies in this book show that many prescriptive dicta contained interesting grains of descriptive detail, and that eventually prescriptivism had only a small-scale, short-term effect on the actual language used.
