Book Synopsis Wish-fulfilment in Philosophy and Psychoanalysis by : Tamas Pataki
Download or read book Wish-fulfilment in Philosophy and Psychoanalysis written by Tamas Pataki and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-24 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wish-fulfilment as a singular means of satisfying ineluctable desire is a pivotal concept in classical psychoanalysis. Freud argued that it was the thread that united dreams, daydreams, phantasy, omnipotent thinking, neurotic and some psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions, art, myth, and religious illusions. The concept's theoretical exploration has been largely neglected within psychoanalysis since, but contemporary philosophers have recognised it as providing an explanatory model for much of the kind of irrational behaviour so problematic for psychiatry, social psychology and the philosophy of mind. Although critically neglected in contemporary psychological and psychoanalytic thought, the concept remains clinically fundamental, under different labels: it encompasses the processes of omnipotent phantasy, symbolic or substitutive satisfaction, actualisation in transference and acting out, symptom formation and defenses such as projective identification. Wish-fulfilment can be shown to be a specifically psychoanalytic compartment of a common-sense psychological theory of action that illuminates not just clinical material but also the paradoxes of irrationality – such as weakness of will and self-deception – that preoccupy philosophers. The first half of this book develops a comprehensive and novel theory of wish-fulfilment, explores its radical implications for the structure of mind, and locates it against the backdrop of both contemporary psychoanalytic and philosophical thought. In the second half, the book applies the theory to illuminate important features of self-deception and delusion, religion, insanity defences, creative writing and the exclusion of mind and intention in the biological drift of modern psychiatry. The book will be essential to philosophers of mind, psychoanalysts, psychiatrists, psychologists, social theorists, and students in these disciplines; as well as readers interested in understanding how the mind works in mental illness, self-deception, religion, and creative writing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The standard edition of Sigmund Freud's classic work on the psychology and significance of dreams What are the most common dreams and why do we have them? What does a dream about death mean? What do dreams of swimming, failing, or flying symbolize? First published in 1899, Sigmund Freud's groundbreaking book The Interpretation of Dreams explores why we dream and why dreams matter in our psychological lives. Delving into theories of manifest and latent dream content; the special language of dreams; dreams as wish fulfillments; the significance of childhood experiences; and much more, Freud offers an incisive and enduringly relevant examination of dream psychology. Encompassing dozens of case histories and detailed analyses of actual dreams, this landmark work grants us unique insight into our sleeping experiences. Renowned for translating Freud's German writings into English, James Strachey―with the assistance of Freud's daughter Anna―first published this edition in 1953. Incorporating all textual alterations made by Freud over a period of thirty years, it remains the most complete translation of the work in print.
Download or read book On Dreams written by William Archer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-07 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1935, William Archer’s interest in dreams had persisted for over quarter of a century, for ten years of which he kept a careful record of his own dreams. These records alone form a valuable collection of material, of which Archer made good use in the writing of the book on dreams on which he was engaged at the time of his death; large parts of these dream-records are reproduced in this book. He left this book partly finished, partly in draft, and partly in the form of notes. In putting together this material the editor, Theodore Besterman, tries to carry out Archer’s intentions as closely as possible, and believed that he represented the book as he would have wished it to appear. It was unquestionably an important contribution to a difficult subject at the time, the result of many years’ study and reflection.

Download or read book In Pursuit of Fulfilment written by Nemir Kirdar and published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson. This book was released on 2012-09-13 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the life story of one of the most successful business leaders of our time. The formative influence upon Investcorp founder Nemir Kirdar was his father, who was mayor of Kirkuk and who instilled a public-service ethic in all of his sons. The book describes the events that drove Kirdar away from a life in politics in Iraq to the safety of the United States where he worked to establish himself in international investment banking. The first event was the assassination of King Faisal II. The second was his arrest after returning to Iraq to start his own business. By the time he flees from Iraq to Lebanon, Kirdar has married and has one daughter. In the beginning it is hard work, a long day in a training programme and then nights attending Fordham University to get his MBA. He works for a consortium of US banks and then moves on to Chase where he asks for his own department with a specialisation in financial projects in the Middle East. Kirdar is given rein to establish this project and an office in Abu Dhabi. Soon he finds the people he most wants to work with him, an international team, and then with some help from the Arab Monetary Fund he founds his company which is to be an investment company for the entire Gulf region. First he must 'explore the appetite of future investors'. He describes with great tact the difficulties of dealing with ultra-wealthy investors, and the period of the 1980s during which the company turned impressive profits in venture capital schemes through the wobbly dotcom craze to the present. He wanted Investcorp to be 'a bridge linking the Middle East and the West' and he has emphatically succeeded in this aim. IN PURSUIT OF FULFILMENT is a personal testimony from one of the world's most successful businessmen, the memoir of a vision - the story of what happens when an ideal encounters real life.
