Book excerpt: For Australian servicemen captured by the Japanese in World War II, humour, courage and dignity in the face of hardship, brutality and deprivation ? and hope in the face of the unknown ? were quiet victories. They defined a uniquely Australian spirit. Defying the Odds tells the incredible story of the officers of B and E Forces interned at Sandakan and Kuching in Borneo. Despite the starvation and the trauma they suffered at the hands of the Japanese, they boosted morale through a regimen of study, music and theatre, and most importantly, by making each other laugh. After the war, military authorities were impressed by their physical and mental resilience and astounded by their achievements. As the years passed, they frequently held reunions to remember their experiences, to relive the jokes and the times they outwitted the guards, to recall old songs and the musicals and plays they staged ? to honour friendships wrought by the war. This is a full-length account of how the officers of B and E Forces defied the odds, and survived.

Book excerpt: Nunuk landed in a hospital ICU after a deadly encounter with the wild honey bees, also known as apis dorsata. He disappeared mysteriously a day before he was to be transferred to another hospital. A week later he woke up and found himself not only lying inside a grave-like cave, but discovered with grim reality that he was actually ‘thrown out’ to the middle of Borneo’s ‘lost world’, arguably one of the planet’s few relatively untouched wilderness areas. A very peculiar stranger, an Old Man, appeared and gracefully showed him a new place to live – a tree-top house, but the real adventure has yet to unfold...

Book excerpt: This is a book depicting the lives of twenty Chinese Indonesian doctors who left Indonesia to immigrate to the USA and to start a new chapter of their lives. Many of the stories started after they graduated from the Medical School. Some of them were placed in remote villages outside Java. Many of those villages had not been served by Physicians before. Support from the Central Government was scare. At that time, the late President Sukarno declared that graduated from Medical schools had to serve the country for three years before they were allowed to specialize or pursue their future plans. These doctors must complete the ECFMG, English and health tests before they could be considered for accredited for internship/residency. After successfully doing their training, they now could apply for a position as a specialist in a hospital or a medical center. Many times they had to be under the supervision of a hospital Director of Education for a period of 2 years. In the meantime, they had to take their Specialty Boards exam to be qualifi ed. Many have successfully done their practice and some became well known in their fi elds. Their Children went to Colleges and Universities and have pursued careers in Medicine Law, Engineering and others.

Book excerpt: 'There followed a blue flash accompanied by a ver y bright magnesium-type flare ... Then came a frighteningly loud but rather flat explosion, which was followed by a blast of hot air ... All this was followed by eerie silence.' This was Cork doctor Aidan MacCarthy's description of the atomic bomb explosion above Nagasaki in August 1945, just over a mile from where he was trembling in a makeshift bomb shelter in the Mitsubishi POW camp. At the end of the war, a Japanese officer did the unthinkable: he surrendered his samurai sword to MacCarthy, his enemy and former prisoner. This is the astonishing story of the wartime adventures of Dr Aidan MacCarthy, who survived the evacuation at Dunkirk, burning planes, sinking ships, jungle warfare and appalling privation as a Japanese prisoner of war. It is a story of survival, forgiveness and humanity at its most admirable.

Book excerpt: The wild success of the traveling Body Worlds exhibition is testimony to the powerful allure that human bodies can have when opened up for display in gallery spaces. But while anatomy museums have shown their visitors much about bodies, they themselves are something of an obscure phenomenon, with their incredible technological developments and complex uses of visual images and the flesh itself remaining largely under researched. This book investigates anatomy museums in Western settings, revealing how they have operated in the often passionate pursuit of knowledge that inspires both fascination and fear. Elizabeth Hallam explores these museums, past and present, showing how they display the human body—whether naked, stripped of skin, completely dissected, or rendered in the form of drawings, three-dimensional models, x-rays, or films. She identifies within anatomy museums a diverse array of related issues—from the representation of deceased bodies in art to the aesthetics of science, from body donation to techniques for preserving corpses and ritualized practices for disposing of the dead. Probing these matters through in-depth study, Anatomy Museum unearths a strange and compelling cultural history of the spaces human bodies are made to occupy when displayed after death.

J.G. de Man worked on the systematics of both the Crustacea, in particular on Decapoda (i.e. crabs, crayfish, lobsters, and shrimps), and the microscopic Nematoda or roundworms. The biographic part describes his years of childhood and youth, student days and the time he was working at the National Museum of Natural History, Leiden, the Netherlands and the period after he resigned at the museum. In appendices, his publications, described Crustacea, Nematoda and other taxa, species named after De Man and the De Man archive are presented. A selection of his drawings and a CD-ROM with his 1884 Nematoda monograph are included. Note to readers: The CD-ROM in some copies of the book contains only the low-resolution scans of De Man's original publication. This book is a collection of 30 short ghost stories, written by a family physician working in Borneo. These supernatural tales are true accounts with a unique insight into the local population and what ails them. Be warned, very few of these stories have a 'happily ever after' ending. A number of these stories may appear to have been left open ended with no explanation, as had been shared with the author in that manner.

Book excerpt: At a time when medical care for the people of the United States is undergoing wrenching change due mainly to vast and costly technological progress, doctors have had to cede much of their initiative and responsibility to third parties. Medicine has become a commercial enterprise. Patients must affiliate themselves with a managed health care organization in order to have access to their doctors. In the hurly-burly of today's techno-medicine, many physicians are too busy to spend time in dialogue with their patients. As a consequence, social and emotional circumstances that have been thoroughly documented to affect physiology and susceptibility to disease are overlooked. Stewart Wolf here critiques the medical establishment and the way those concerned with its various responsibilities discharge them. He puts medicine's responsibilities to society into historical perspective, relating it to social changes. He begins with the ways medical candidates are selected. He continues with commentary on currently designed teaching and learning, the qualities required in a physician and in a medical scientist, and the nature and challenges of disease and what can be done about them. Finally, Wolf provides a useful way of thinking about human biology, to better understand why people become sick or well and what people have to contend with to stay well. Throughout he emphasizes the role of the brain in controlling behavior of all sorts, general and visceral. Wolf emphasizes the regulatory power of the nervous system as it perceives and evaluates life experiences and influences learning, behavior, and susceptibility to disease. Wolf'sgoal is not to supply a recipe for the achievement of better health, but to encourage a better understanding of ourselves and the paths toward health. Educating Doctors reexamines the responsibilities, goals, and activities of the medical establishment. As such it is a must read for policymakers, sociologists, and professionals working in the medical field.
