Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was on a smoldering hot day that the young teen, Jane, was walking briskly from her house toward the street, a break from her usual habit of hiding indoors to avoid a chance encounter with soldiers who could capture her. Suddenly she sensed a shadow overhead, which was accompanied by the dreaded whistling sound of bombs pushing downward through the air. She knew immediately that she was in extreme danger. She quickly looked up to determine the bombs’ direction so she could deduce the best avoidance strategy. Unfortunately, it seemed already too late as the scotching heat above her head indicated the bombs close proximity. Before she could act, everything went dark and there was deadly silence. Later, as she pushed debris out of her mouth, after realizing she was miraculously still alive, Jane had no idea that this astonishing outcome would be just one of many in her future. In a riveting retelling of her experiences as a young girl living through the Nigerian Civil War, Dr. Jane recounts amazing incidences of near-death occurrences with escapes that defy explanation. While inviting others into her journey through the chaos, she encourages us to explore with her whether wartime chaos, and the abundance of impossible odds, could be breeding grounds for divine interventions, miracles, and the inpetus to evaluate events in our lives differently. Loved Beyond Compare is the gripping memoir of a Nigerian girl’s experiences as she and her family struggled to survive the vicious civil war that raged around them.

Book Synopsis Improve, Perfect, & Perpetuate by : Oliver S. Hayward

This book was released on 2000-10-03 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first full-scale biography of Nathan Smith -- medical pioneer, founder of Dartmouth Medical School and cofounder of three other medical schools (Yale, Vermont, and Bowdoin), and progenitor of a long line of physicians. Smith was a central figure in early American medical education, from 1787 when he began practicing in New Hampshire, to his death in New Haven in 1829. In his day, Smith was probably the nation's leading physician, surgeon, and medical educator, and well ahead of his time in insisting that doctors practice "watchful waiting" and emphasizing patient-centered care. In the process of telling Smith's life and story, authors Hayward and Putnam fill out in new ways the picture of medical treatment and medical education in post-Colonial America. The tale of Smith's remarkable career unfolds in New England, where the authors create a sense of time and place through an exhaustive study of primary and secondary sources, and especially Smith's own letters and lecture notes taken by his students. Readers become immersed in Smith's life and the spirit of the times as they examine early Victorian notions of disease, how medical students were taught (the chapter on body snatching is especially lively), the politics and economics of founding professional medical schools in early America, and other topics. The book provides a vivid description of what it was like to study and practice medicine, and be the recipient of the ministrations of physicians, during this critical period.
Book Synopsis Exploitation, Ethics and Law by : Suzanne Ost
Download or read book Exploitation, Ethics and Law written by Suzanne Ost and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-08-26 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on a matter of continuing contemporary significance, this book is the first work to offer an in-depth exploration of exploitation in the doctor-patient relationship. It provides a theoretical analysis of the concept of exploitation, setting out exploitation’s essential elements within the authors’ account of wrongful exploitation. It then presents a contextual analysis of exploitation in the doctor-patient relationship, considering the dynamics of this fiduciary relationship, the significance of vulnerability, and the reasons why exploitation in this relationship is particularly wrongful. Two case studies – sexual exploitation and assisted dying – are employed to assess what the appropriate legal, ethical and regulatory responses to exploitation should be, to identify common themes regarding the doctor’s behaviour (such as the use of undue influence as a conduit through which to take advantage of and misuse patients), and to illustrate the effects of exploitation on patients. A recurring question addressed is how exploitation in the doctor-patient relationship is and should be dealt with by ethics, regulators and the law, and whether exploitation in this relationship is a special case. The book provides a critical, interdisciplinary evaluation of exploitation in the doctor-patient relationship that will be of interest to health care lawyers, bioethicists, legal academics and practitioners, health care professionals and policymakers.
Book Synopsis Gender Scripts in Medicine and Narrative by : Angela Laflen
Download or read book Gender Scripts in Medicine and Narrative written by Angela Laflen and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-06-09 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender is an exciting area of current research in the medical humanities, and by combining the study of medical narratives with theories of gender and sexuality, the essays in Gender Scripts in Medicine and Narrative illustrate the power of gender stereotypes to shape the way medicine is practiced and perceived. The chapters of Gender Scripts in Medicine and Narrative investigate gendered perceptions and representations of healers and patients in fiction, memoir, popular literature, poetry, film, television, the history of science, new media, and visual art. The fourteen chapters of Gender Scripts in Medicine and Narrative are organized into four cohesive sections. These chapters investigate the impact of gender stereotypes on medical narratives from a variety of points of view, considering narratives from diverse languages, time periods, genres, and media. Each section addresses some of the most pressing and provocative issues in theories of gender and the medical humanities: I. Gendering the Medical Gaze and Pathology; II. Monitoring Race through Reproduction; III. Rescripting Trauma and Healing; and IV. Medical Masculinities. Along with these sections, Gender Scripts Medicine and Narrative features a preface by Rita Charon, MD, PhD, Director and Founder, The Program in Narrative Medicine, Columbia University, a foreword by Marcelline Block, and an introduction by Angela Laflen. This collection takes a truly interdisciplinary look at the topic of gender and medicine, and the impressive group of contributors to the anthology represent a wide range of academic fields of inquiry, including medical humanities, bioethics, English, modern languages, women’s studies, film theory, postcolonial theory, art history, the history of science and medicine, new media studies, theories of trauma, among others. This approach of crossing boundaries of genre and discipline makes the volume accessible to scholars who are concerned with narrative, gender, and/or medical ethics.
