Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Dissertation on the Philosophy of Aristotle: In Four Books, in Which His Principal Physical and Metaphysical Dogmas Are Unfolded and It Is Shown, From Indubitable Evidence, That His Philosophy Has Not Been Accurately Known Since the Destruction of the Greeks, the Insufficiency Also of the Philosophy As the first and second books of this Dissertation are scarcely any thing else than a Collection from the volumes of my translation of Aristotle's Works, it is necessary to observe, that my reason for so doing was, that I might benefit as much as possible those who were not purchasers of that translation. For as it consists of nine volumes 4to, and fifty copies only of it were printed, it must unavoidably be confined to a few purchasers. Of the present volume, therefore, a greater number than fifty were printed, in order that those English readers might be in possession of the principal physical and metaphysical dogmas of Aristotle, who by the magnitude of the price, and the paucity of the copies, were prevented from obtaining the translation of the whole of his Works. Conceiving also, that it would be more acceptable to the reader, to present him with these dogmas in their most genuine form, I have given them in the very words of Aristotle himself; and have added the commentaries on them of his best Greek disciples. For I have neither the arrogance to suppose, that any explanations of mine could be sufficient to supersede the elucidations of these excellent, men, nor the audacity to destroy Aristotle's very scientific method of philosophizing, by at temping, like the ephemeral writers of the age, to exhibit his doctrines In a form calculated to satisfy the superficial, and captivate the vulgar. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This wide-ranging collection of essays by European and American scholars presents some of the most interesting and important work now being done on the political philosophy of Aristotle. Part One investigates what is arguably the most urgent and controversial question of concern to students of Aristotle today, namely, the possibility of grounding moral and political action in some version of Aristotelian rationalism. Part Two considers a series of specific questions arising from the Politics and the Nicomachean Ethics, among which are Aristotle's understanding of moral virtue; the problem of evil; justice and the very idea of "common good"; friendship; the status of the philosophic life vis-à-vis the political; and the outlines of the best possible political community. This book was released on 2015-08-14 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1973. Aristotle’s early works probably belong to the formative era of his philosophic thought and as such contribute vitally to the understanding and evaluation of the development of his philosophy. This book shows that the philosophy propagated in these lost works indicates an undeniable Platonism, and thus seems to conflict with the basic doctrines in the traditional treatises collected in the Corpus Aristotelicum. Was the author of the lost early works and the later preserved treatises one and the same person, or were some of these treatises written by members of the Early Peripatus? This, the second of two volumes, discusses in detail certain decisive aspects of Aristotle’s early works. Fascinating hypotheses and conjectures put forward here provoke discussion and further investigation in the ‘Aristotelian Problem’.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For most of this century, Aristotelian scholarship was dominated by a single question: how might Aristotle's intellectual development be used to shed light on his philosophical doctrines? Opinions differed widely as to how this growth was to be charted; eventually, a reaction to the whole enterprise set in, and the past thirty years have seen the question lose its prominence. Recently, certain scholars have reopened the question. In this collection of new essays, sixteen distinguished scholars reconsider the promise and limitations of developmentalism, with contributions devoted to Aristotle's logic and epistemology, physics, biology and psychology, ethics and politics, and metaphysics. Also included are classic developmental studies by Anton-Hermann Chroust and Thomas Case. Book excerpt: The focus of Aristotle on Prescription is Aristotle’s reflections on rule-making. It is widely believed that Aristotle was only concerned with decision-making, understood as a deliberative process enabling a person to arrive at particular, contingent decisions. However, rule-making is fundamental to Aristotle’s ethical texts. Establishing rules means indicating patterns for action that are sufficiently specific to meet situational difficulties and sufficiently constant in time to provide us with a code of behaviour to be used in similar situations. When we prescribe rules, we demonstrate the ability to direct not only our own life but also other people’s lives. Alesse’s book explores Aristotle’s deep reflections on the nature and functions of prescription, and on the relationship between rules and individual decisions.
