Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Diplomat's Wife in Mexico Though the events recorded in these letters are known to all the world, they may, perhaps, take on another significance seen through the eyes of one who has loved Mexico for her beauty and wept for the disasters that have overtaken her. The time has not yet come for a full history of the events leading to the breaking off of diplomatic relations, but after much pondering I have decided to publish these letters. They were written to my mother, day by day, after a habit of long years, to console both her and me for separation, and without any thought of publication. In spite of necessary omissions they may throw some light on the difficulties of the Mexican situation, which we have made our own, and which every American wishes to see solved in a way that will testify to the persistence of those qualities that made us great. Victoriano Huerta, the central figure of these letters, is dead, and many with him; but the tragedy of the nation still goes on. So above all thought of party or personal expediency, and because of vital issues yet to be decided, I offer this simple chronicle. The Mexican book is still open, the pages just turned are crumpled and ensanguined. New and momentous chapters for us and for Mexico are being written and I should be forever regretful had courage failed me to write my little share. New and momentous chapters for us and for Mexico are being written and I should be forever regretful had courage failed me to write my little share. It is two years ago to-day that diplomatic relations were broken off between the two republics. It is more than two years since the Constitutionalists under Villa and Carranza have had our full moral and material support. The results have been a punitive expedition sent into Mexico to capture Villa, and very uncertain and unsatisfactory relations with the hostile de facto government under Carranza. As for beautiful Mexico—her industries are dead, her lands laid waste, her sons and daughters are in exile, or starving in the “treasure-house of the world.” What I here give forth—and the giving is not easy—I offer only with a trembling hope of service.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Further Correspondence Respecting the Renewal of Diplomatic Relations With Mexico That we do not think that Her Majesty's Government would incur any legal liability to the persons whose claims are the subject of Conventions between the Mexican and British Governments, in case the latter Government should agree to the abrogation of such Conventions. It is to be observed that the claims of the individuals interested against the Mexican Government are not created by the Conventions. All that the Conventions do is to create an obligation as between the two Governments for the payment in the prescribed manner. And it is, we think, competent for the Governments concerned to put an end to this international agreement. Like lightning through the poet's mind These burning thoughts were flashing But in his wife he could not find One symptom of compassion. She'd rest herself a little while, Then, all at once, would rally, And, giving him a fiendish smile, Would call aloud for Sallie. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Diplomatic Woman "Saints defend us!" I pettishly exclaimed. "Is there no one in the world with an atom of brains? I don't want to go as 'Night' or 'Morning, ' nor as 'Marguerite' or 'Pierrette, ' or 'Madame la Pompadour'; I want something original!" And I stamped my foot to give emphasis to the remark. "Shall it be as 'Carmen, ' madame?" I sank into a chair in dismay. "Carmen!" This was the creature's idea of originality. It was too ludicrous for anger. I laughed, and then, as I raised my eyes to Madame Virot's indignantly bewildered countenance, my glance fell upon a dress in a wardrobe behind her, and I pointed to it in a flutter of excitement. "Some one has originality, after all," I cried. "What does that dress represent?" "An ice palace, madame." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diplomatic Memoirs, Vol. 1 of 2 After canvassing the matter fully with my wife, we decided that, with our young family, a brief residence in Europe would be both pleasant and useful; and I informed the Senator that if it could be had I should be gratified to receive the appointment of Minister to Switzerland, which was in the lowest grade Of our diplomatic service. It will thus be seen that thirty years and more ago the diplomatic service presented the same allurement to inexperienced but ambitious young men as it seems to possess at the present day. Upon learning my choice, the Senator approved of it and assured me that I might count on receiving the appointment soon after the re-inauguration of the President, and that I might shape my business arrangements accordingly. But. During the course of the ensuing winter I received a tele gram from Senator Morton asking me to come to Washing ton. Upon my arrival at the capital I was informed by him that he had encountered some difficulty in securing the Swiss Mission for me; that the President had promised the friends of the incumbent that he might continue in the office during the coming term; but that he had offered to appoint me to the Mexican Mission.
