Book excerpt: Radar Signals: An Introduction to Theory and Application introduces the reader to the basic theory and application of radar signals that are designated as large time-bandwidth or pulse-compression waveforms. Topics covered include matched filtering and pulse compression; optimum predetection processing; the radar ambiguity function; and the linear frequency modulation waveform and matched filter. Parameter estimation and discrete coded waveforms are also discussed, along with the effects of distortion on matched-filter signals. This book is comprised of 14 chapters and begins with an overview of the concepts and techniques of pulse compression matched filtering, with emphasis on coding source and decoding device. The discussion then turns to the derivation of the matched-filter properties in order to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio; analysis of radar ambiguity function using the principle of stationary phase; parameter estimation and the method of maximum likelihood; and measurement accuracies of matched-filter radar signals. Waveform design criteria for multiple and dense target environments are also considered. The final chapter describes a number of techniques for designing microwave dispersive delays. This monograph will be a useful resource for graduate students and practicing engineers in the field of radar system engineering.

Book excerpt: The patent describes a coherent, 13 bit phase reversal pulse modulator and pulse compression filter for increasing the range resolution of a coherent radar. The transmitted pulse is subdivided into equal duration bits, and as the pulse is being formed each bit may or may not be shifted in phase determined by a digital code generator. The range resolution of which this pulse reversal modulated pulse is capable is achieved by processing the radar return signal in an approximation to a matched filter.

This book was released on 1964 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The output functions of the pulse-compression filter which correspond to the matched filter case and the mis matched case are compared. Numerical comparison is made for two pulse-compression systems of particular interest. The primary effect of mismatch is found to be a reduction in signal-to-noise ratio which, in the worst case considered in this report, is less than 10 per cent. Deviations from the idealized rectangular amplitude spectrum and linear group delay of the transmitted signal, which was used in the previous analysis, are considered. These deviations, which are viewed as distortions, are chosen to provide a more realistic representation of the transmitted signal. The output signal thus obtained is expressed as the sum of the original term and a distortion term. An upper bound for the phase difference caused by the distortion term is obtained and is found to be negligibly small, even in the worst case considered. It therefore appears that the equations derived in the previous reports (and which were based on the idealized signal) need not be modified, and that the given procedure for relating the phase and delay measurements to the target parameters remains valid.

Book excerpt: A self-contained approach to DSP techniques and applications in radar imaging The processing of radar images, in general, consists of three major fields: Digital Signal Processing (DSP); antenna and radar operation; and algorithms used to process the radar images. This book brings together material from these different areas to allow readers to gain a thorough understanding of how radar images are processed. The book is divided into three main parts and covers: * DSP principles and signal characteristics in both analog and digital domains, advanced signal sampling, and interpolation techniques * Antenna theory (Maxwell equation, radiation field from dipole, and linear phased array), radar fundamentals, radar modulation, and target-detection techniques (continuous wave, pulsed Linear Frequency Modulation, and stepped Frequency Modulation) * Properties of radar images, algorithms used for radar image processing, simulation examples, and results of satellite image files processed by Range-Doppler and Stolt interpolation algorithms The book fully utilizes the computing and graphical capability of MATLAB? to display the signals at various processing stages in 3D and/or cross-sectional views. Additionally, the text is complemented with flowcharts and system block diagrams to aid in readers' comprehension. Digital Signal Processing Techniques and Applications in Radar Image Processing serves as an ideal textbook for graduate students and practicing engineers who wish to gain firsthand experience in applying DSP principles and technologies to radar imaging.

Book excerpt: Analyzes and discusses the operating principle, signal processing method, and experimental results of this advanced radar technology This book systematically discusses the operating principle, signal processing method, target measurement technology, and experimental results of a new kind of radar called synthetic impulse and aperture radar (SIAR). The purpose is to help readers acquire an insight into the concept and principle of the SIAR, to know its operation mode, signal processing method, the difference between the traditional radar and itself, the designing ideals, and the developing method. It includes 10 chapters. Chapter 1 gives an introduction to the basic principle of SIAR and its characteristic of four antis. Chapter 2 introduces the operating principles and system constitution of SIAR. Chapter 3 presents the main waveforms and the corresponding signal processing methods. Chapter 4 is about the long-time integration technique. Chapter 5 shows the high-accuracy measurement and tracking of 4D parameters of target in SIAR. The range-angle coupling and decoupling are introduced in Chapter 6, where a criteria for transmit frequency optimization of array elements is studied to overcome the coupling among range, azimuth and elevation. In Chapter 7, detection and tracking of targets in strong interference background is investigated. Chapter 8 analyzes quantitatively the influence of array error on the tracking accuracy of SIAR. Expansion of impulse and aperture synthesis to HF band and microwave band are introduced respectively in Chapter 9 and Chapter 10. The operating principle of the novel bi-static surface wave radar system, as well as the experimental system and the experimental results are included in Chapter 9. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Chapter 1, using the differential equation as the fundamental system description, we show how to obtain the filtering functions associated with physical systems; namely, the impulse response, step response, weighting function, and convolution integral. Chapter 2 introduces the Fourier and Laplace transforms, which lead to the frequency-domain system descriptions including the transfer function, magnitude response, phase response, and group-delay response. An introduction to the Hilbert transform, which is useful for relating specific network functions. In chapter 3 theoretical and realizable lowpass responses, including limitations in the time and frequency domains, are discussed. In Chapter 4 we concentrate on the transformation of the normalized lowpass prototype into other filter types. The narrowband and bandpass filter is discussed in detail because its analysis is applicable to crystal, helical, coaxial cavity, stripline, interdigital, and waveguide filters. In chapter 5 we consider the all-pass function, a function that is useful for phase and group delay equalization and for the simulation of specified delay. In chapter 6 we discuss the finite Q elements and predistortion. In chapter 7 we switch the focus from classical filter treatment to a consideration of the filtering of signals in a noisy environment, in particular, the matched filter. In chapter 8 we discuss the two methods of time-domain synthesis, the quasi-stationary approach to the analysis of linear systems excited by modulated inputs, and the subject of average time delay. Chapter 9 is devoted to digital filtering and includes a discussion of the z-transform

Book excerpt: An algorithm is presented for implementing a digital matched filter for periodic and windowed periodic radar waveforms. The algorithm is based on circular convolutional techniques. For moderate to high duty cycles d (radar on time to pulse repetition interval (PRI) ratio), the circular convolutional algorithm uses 50% fewer complex multiply operations (CMOPs) than does a fast convolution implementation. In fact, if BPRI is the radar waveform bandwidth-PRI product, then the circular convolutional technique is numerically more efficient if d> 1/sq. rt(8(BPRI)). Furthermore, the circular convolution technique is numerically more efficient when the pulse compression ratio p> sq. rt. (BPRI/8). Keywords: Radar; Matched filter; Waveforms.
