To remedy this evil, an Indian Voca bulary was publi ied at London in 1788, 121110; a Dictionary of Moham medan Law and Bengal Revenue Terms, by Mr. Gladwin, at Calcutta, in 1797, Ato; (but this Work is exceedingly fcarce in Europe;) and an Indian Glof fary, in 8v0, by Mr. 'roberts, in1800: yet neither of thefe works have the original words in the Perfian cha racter placed at the beginning of the articles. This defeet has been often mentioned to the Editor, by various Gentlemen who have returned from -the Eai'c Indies, who felt the Want of fuch a vade mecum, and who have expre 'ed a defire to fee a work exe outed on a more extenfive plan, fuch as might be ufeful to thofe Who may, be employed by the Company in the feveral departments of Government, of Law, and of Commerce.
