D., With an Account of the Principal Sects and Heresies But the limitation of such a work to this period at once disembarrassed our pages of the mass of Teutonic, and sometimes almost pagan, names with which, after the settlement of the barbarians in Europe, we were over whelmed; and thus of itself rendered it possible to bring the work into much narrower compass. Moreover, a mass of insignificant names, which the principles of scholarly completeness obliged us to introduce into the larger Dictionary, were not needed for the wider circle now in contemplation. They were useful and necessary for purposes of learned reference, but they cast no light on the course and meaning of Church history for ordinary readers. We have had to exercise a discretion (which may sometimes seem to have been arbitrary) in selecting, for instance, from the 596 Johns just mentioned those which were the most valuable for such readers as we had in view; and for the manner in which we have exercised that discretion we must trust ourselves to the indulgent judgment of our readers. The publisher gave us generous limits but it seemed to him and to ourselves indispensable for the general usefulness of the Dictionary that it should be restricted to one volume; and we were thus, with respect to the minor names, obliged to omit many which, though of some interest, seemed to be such as could be best dispensed with. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Abelard to Zwingli, via a multitude of saints and sinners, Nick Page guides us through the creeds, the councils, the buildings and the background of the Christian church in an illuminating, and perhaps ever so slightly irreverent way. Well-known as a writer, speaker, unlicensed historian and general information-monger, Nick Page combines in-depth research, historical analysis and cutting-edge guesswork to explore how on earth the Christian church has survived all that 2,000 years of heroes, villains and misfits could throw at it (mostly from the inside) to remain one of the most influential forces in the world today. 'I was predestined to read this.' John Calvin. 'I felt my heart strangely warmed. Or it could have been indigestion.' John Wesley.
Book Synopsis The Constancy and Development in the Christology of Theodoret of Cyrrhus by : Vasilije Vranic
Download or read book The Constancy and Development in the Christology of Theodoret of Cyrrhus written by Vasilije Vranic and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-02-04 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Constancy and Development of the Christology of Theodoret of Cyrrhus Vasilije Vranic offers an assessment of the involvement of Theodoret of Cyrrhus in the Nestorian and Miaphysite controversies of the fifth century. Theodoret’s Christological language and concepts are examined in their historical contexts. The study is based on the comparison between the early period of Theodoret’s Christological output (Expositio rectae fidei and Refutation of the Twelve Anathemas) and his mature period (Eranistes). Theodoret’s Christology is ultimately vindicated and his position as a credible theologian who anticipated the definition of the Council of Chalcedon (AD 451) is assured, while proposing that challenges to the consistency of his Christology ought to be reconsidered.

Book excerpt: This work represents the current and most relevant content on the studies of how Christianity has fared in the ancient home of its founder and birth. Much has been written about Christianity and how it has survived since its migration out of its homeland but this comprehensive reference work reassesses the geographic and demographic impact of the dramatic changes in this perennially combustible world region. The Rowman & Littlefield Handbook of Christianity in the Middle East also spans the historical, socio-political and contemporary settings of the region and importantly describes the interactions that Christianity has had with other major/minor religions in the region.
Book Synopsis The Generations of Antichrist by : G H. ELIASON
Download or read book The Generations of Antichrist written by G H. ELIASON and published by GH Eliason. This book was released on 2010-12-21 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides solid answers about the rise of the last world religion. It documents its inception and growth. It also opens up the histories of the three monotheistic faiths, and shows the people of the Gospels in history. Showing who they were, their writings, and their lives documented outside the Gospels such as Lazarus who arguably lived after his resurrection until he was 120 years old and was one of the most famous people of his day. First presenting arguments against current movements to change the faith, the author offers an exploded view of the times leading up to, during, and after the lives of the Apostles and how far and fast the Gospel changed an entire world. The tumultuous timeframe when opened up will shock and amaze you. Detailing the inception, development, and growth of the religion of Antichrist is shown historically for over 500 years. This book answers such questions as how can a man become a god and where does he gain the knowledge to bring his own image to life? How does he gain the world, and why does it follow him. In history and then real-time, the developments in religion, society, technology, and government are shown that catalyze the rise and advent of the Lawless One.
