Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of extant languages, Ch'orti' Mayan is the closest to ancient the Maya hieroglyphic script, but it is a language that is decreasing in usage. In southern Guatemala where it is spoken, many children no longer learn it, as Spanish dominates most experiences. From linguistic and anthropological data gathered over many years, Kerry Hull has created the largest and most complete Ch'orti' Mayan dictionary to date. With nearly 9,000 entries, this trilingual dictionary of Ch'orti', Spanish, and English preserves ancient words and concepts that were vital to this culture in the past. Each entry contains examples of Ch'orti' sentences along with their translations. Each term is defined grammatically and linked to a grammatical index. Variations due to age and region are noted. Additionally, extensive cultural and linguistic annotations accompany many entries, providing detailed looks into Ch'orti' daily life, mythology, flora and fauna, healing, ritual, and food. Hull worked closely with native speakers, including traditional ritual specialists, and presents that work here in a way that is easily accessible to scholars and laypersons alike.

Book excerpt: A timely synthesis of the latest research and perspectives on ancient Maya economics, this volume illuminates the sophistication and intricacy of economic systems in the Preclassic, Classic, and Postclassic periods. Contributors from a wide range of disciplines move beyond paradigms of elite control and centralized exchange to focus on individual agency, highlighting production and exchange that took place at all levels of society. Case studies draw on new archaeological evidence from rural households and urban marketplaces to reconstruct the trade networks for tools, ceramics, obsidian, salt, and agricultural goods throughout the empire. They also describe the ways household production integrated with community, regional, and interregional markets. Redirecting the field of ancient Maya economic studies away from simplistic characterizations of the past by fully representing the range of current views on the subject, this volume delves deeply into multiple facets of a complex, interdependent material world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Only True People" is a timely and rigorous examination of ethnicity among the ancient and modern Maya, focusing on ethnogenesis and exploring the complexities of Maya identity—how it developed, where and when it emerged, and why it continues to change over time. In the volume, a multidisciplinary group of well-known scholars including archaeologists, linguists, ethnographers, ethnohistorians, and epigraphers investigate ethnicity and other forms of group identity at a number of Maya sites and places, from the northern reaches of the Yucatan to the Southern Periphery, and across different time periods, from the Classic period to the modern day. Each contribution challenges the notion of ethnically homogenous "Maya peoples" for their region and chronology and explores how their work contributes to the definition of "ethnicity" for ancient Maya society. Contributors confront some of the most difficult theoretical debates concerning identity in the literature today: how different ethnic groups define themselves in relation to others; under what circumstances ethnicity is marked by overt expressions of group membership and when it is hidden from view; and the processes that transform ethnic identities and their expressions. By addressing the social constructs and conditions behind Maya ethnicity, both past and present, "The Only True People" contributes to the understanding of ethnicity as a complex set of relationships among people who lived in real and imagined communities, as well as among people separated by social boundaries. The volume will be a key resource for Mayanists and will be of interest to students and scholars of ethnography, anthropology, and cultural studies as well. Contributors: McCale Ashenbrener, Ellen E. Bell, Marcello A. Canuto, Juan Castillo Cocom, David A. Freidel, Wolfgang Gabbert, Stanley P. Guente, Jonathan Hill, Charles Andrew Hofling, Martha J. Macri, Damien B. Book excerpt: Feldman spent two years transcribing the five separate vocabularies of a corpus called the Viana dictionary of the Poqom Maya from photocopies and copy flows. The core of the dictionary that translates the Maya into Spanish was written by Dominican friar Francisco Viana (1528-1608), who arrived in Guatemala in 1556. Feldman has re-alphabetized the text, removed duplications and fragments that are too incomplete to have any meaning, and added material from other sources when useful. Book excerpt: Classification is a popular topic in typological, descriptive and theoretical linguistics. This volume is the first to deal specifically with the diachrony of linguistic systems of classification. It comprises original papers that examine the ways in which linguistic classification systems arise, change, and dissipate in both natural circumstances and in circumstances of attrition. The role of diffusion in such processes is explored, as well as the question of what can be diffused. The volume is not restricted to nominal systems of classification, but also includes papers dealing with the less well-known phenomenon of verbal classification. Languages from a wide spread of world regions are examined, including Africa, Amazonia, Australia, Eurasia, Oceania, and Mesoamerica. The volume will be of interest to linguistic typologists, descriptive linguists, historical linguists, and grammaticalization theorists.

Book excerpt: Photographic reproduction of the Maya-Spanish and Spanish-Maya dictionaries known as the Diccionario de Motul, compiled during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. The Maya-Spanish dictionary (v. 3-6, 930 p.) has been identified as the "Calepino" compiled by Father Antonio de Ciudad Real between 1580 and 1617, in part while he resided at the Franciscan convent in Motul. His work includes 15,975 words from "aal" to "xuxek," with words beginning with Parra letters following the "B" section. The Spanish-Maya vocabulary, bearing the caption title of "Vocabulario en la lengua de maya" (v. 1-2, 416 p.), was probably compiled somewhat later in the 17th century by an unidentified author. The approximately 11,180 entries list words and phrases in Spanish from "a" to "zorro, " followed by their equivalents in Maya.
