Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do you evaluate history? For one person, 'it is most revealing'; for another, 'it is boring'; yet another 'out of fashion'. History is so many things to so many people and so this book tries to make the story of Nigeria's history not only exciting and incisive but also refreshingly hot and spicy. It is not about anything that happened a century ago. It is yesterday in history; a chronology of remarkable events from Independence on October 1, 1960 to the Golden Jubilee Anniversary on October 1, 2010. It is about politics, economic development, social development, conflicts, intrigues etc. You can interview the actors; major and minor, victims and villains. The book is full of truth that history books will be shy to talk about. It is not just about leaders, it is also about ordinary people; what made them cry or laugh, what made them suffer or die. Major speeches of leaders are incorporated to make evaluation and better understanding of our journey through 50 years a most rewarding experience. You can thereafter possibly write Nigeria's history from you own perspective

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British empire was a huge enterprise. To foreigners it more or less defined Britain in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Its repercussions in the wider world are still with us today. It also had a great impact on Britain herself: for example, on her economy, security, population, and eating habits. One might expect this to have been reflected in her society and culture. Indeed, this has now become the conventional wisdom: that Britain was steeped in imperialism domestically, which affected (or infected) almost everything Britons thought, felt, and did. This is the first book to examine this assumption critically against the broader background of contemporary British society. Bernard Porter, a leading imperial historian, argues that the empire had a far lower profile in Britain than it did abroad. Many Britons could hardly have been aware of it for most of the nineteenth century and only a small number was in any way committed to it. Between these extremes opinions differed widely over what was even meant by the empire. This depended largely on class, and even when people were aware of the empire, it had no appreciable impact on their thinking about anything else. Indeed, the influence far more often went the other way, with perceptions of the empire being affected (or distorted) by more powerful domestic discourses. Although Britain was an imperial nation in this period, she was never a genuine imperial society. As well as showing how this was possible, Porter also discusses the implications of this attitude for Britain and her empire, and for the relationship between culture and imperialism more generally, bringing his study up to date by including the case of the present-day USA.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the relationships between sport event hosting and community development goals. With sport events proliferating around the world, from major events to local events, the book explains how community goals can be embedded into sports event planning, and how events at all levels can be most effectively leveraged to achieve positive outcomes and legacies for local communities. Featuring real-world case studies and the perspective of industry practitioners in every chapter, the book explores the commercial, social, and political contexts in which events take place and what is meant by "legacy" and "impact." It introduces the key stakeholders, from residents and local government to NGOs, as well as the spectrum of goals that might be in play, and looks at partnerships working for the best effect. The book also explains the sports event management process, from bidding to planning to venue management to monitoring and evaluation, and considers how community development goals can, and should, be incorporated at every stage. With a practical focus, and full of useful features for learning and understanding, this is essential reading for any student or practitioner with an interest in sports events, community sport, sport development, event management, or sustainable business.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection brings together scholars from disciplines including Children’s Literature, Classics, and History to develop fresh approaches to children’s culture and the uses of the past. It charts the significance of historical episodes and characters during the long nineteenth-century (1750-1914), a critical period in children's culture. Boys and girls across social classes often experienced different pasts simultaneously, for purposes of amusement and instruction. The book highlights an active and shifting market in history for children, and reveals how children were actively involved in consuming and repackaging the past: from playing with historically themed toys and games to performing in plays and pageants. Each chapter reconstructs encounters across different media, uncovering the cultural work done by particular pasts and exposing the key role of playfulness in the British historical imagination.

Book excerpt: For many years, scholars have been moving away from the idea of a singular, secular, rationalistic, and mechanistic “Enlightenment project.” Historian Peter Reill has been one of those at the forefront of this development, demonstrating the need for a broader and more varied understanding of eighteenth-century conceptions of nature. Life Forms in the Thinking of the Long Eighteenth Century is a unique reappraisal of Enlightenment thought on nature, biology, and the organic world that responds to Reill’s work. The ten essays included in the collection analyse the place of historicism, vitalism, and esotericism in the eighteenth century – three strands of thought rarely connected, but all of which are central to Reill’s innovative work. Working across national and regional boundaries, they engage not only French and English but also Italian, Swiss, and German writers.

It discusses significant travel, tourism and hospitality events while referring to tourism-related notions and theories that have been developed since the beginnings of tourism. Its scope moves beyond a comprehensive historical account of facts and events. Instead, it bridges these with contemporary issues, challenges and concerns, hence enabling readers to connect tourism past with the present and future. This textbook aspires to enhance readers' comprehension of the perplexed system of tourism, promoting decision-making and even the development of new theories. This book will be of great interest to academics, practitioners and students from a wide variety of disciplines, including tourism, hospitality, events, sociology, psychology, philosophy, history and human geography.
