Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate eighth grade students2 perceptions of their mathematics teachers2 interpersonal behaviors. The study also investigated mathematics teachers2 perceptions of their own interpersonal behaviors as well as relationships among students2 perceptions of their teachers2 interpersonal behaviors, attitudes towards mathematics, mathematics achievements, student gender, teacher gender, and socio-economical background. Questionnaire on Teacher Interaction (QTI) scale and a mathematics attitude scale were used for data collection. Data were collected from a sample of 1317 eighth grade students in public elementary schools in the following provinces: Ýstanbul, Ankara, Ýzmir, Adana, Bursa, and Hatay. Statistical analyses revealed that the Turkish version of QTI translated and adapted by the researcher had an acceptable degree of validity and reliability. Results showed that Turkish students perceive their mathematics teachers as displaying high levels of leadership, helpful/friendly, understanding, and displaying strict behaviors rather than uncertain, admonishing and dissatisfied behaviors. The results also indicated that students2 perceptions of their mathematics teachers2 interpersonal behaviors were associated with their attitudes towards mathematics and their mathematics achievement. While the leadership, helpful/friendly, and understanding behaviors had positive correlations with attitude scores of students, the uncertain, dissatisfied, admonishing and strict behaviors had negative correlations. Similarly, students who perceived their teacher as displaying leadership, helping/friendly and understanding behavior had higher achievement levels than the ones who perceive their teacher as strict, uncertain, admonishing and dissatisfied. Students with higher cultural and economical background perceived their teachers more favorably. The MANOVA results indicated that girls generally perceived their mathematics teacher more cooperative than.

Book excerpt: Being successful in math is considered to be important for future employability, and music may be an important venue for students to improve their math skills. Rather than being unrelated, strong musical education programs have been linked to higher performance in math and academics in general. The purpose of this correlational study was to determine whether a statistically significant relationship exists between students’ attitudes toward math and their attitudes toward music with regard to gender. A convenience sample of 107 eighth grade students from a metropolitan Atlanta, Georgia school district participated in two surveys: Tapia’s Attitude Toward Mathematics Inventory (ATMI) and Shaw and Tomcala’s Music Attitudes Inventory (MAI). Pearson correlations were utilized to test three null hypotheses to describe students’ attitudes toward math and music with regard to gender. No statistically significant relationship was found between students’ attitudes towards math and music. It was concluded that further research is needed to expand the sample to include sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students instead of just eighth grade students.

Most efforts focus on accountability reform. The learner-centered model for school reform is organized around the personal domain for systemic reform. How teachers work with students is greatly influenced by policy and what they believe about student learning and behavior. Subsequently, teacher behaviors, beliefs, and practices impact learning. This dissertation attempted to establish teacher beliefs and their effectiveness on student achievement on the eighth-grade End-of-Grade Mathematics Test in the State of North Carolina. -- This study was conducted within the Sandhills Regional Education Consortium located in the central part of North Carolina. As of the 2011 school year, 12 school districts made up the Sandhills Regional Education Consortium; 5 of the twelve districts participated in this research study. -- A non-experimental quantitative study design was used to examine teachers' beliefs about the learner, learning, and teaching as well as the impact of their beliefs on student mathematics achievement. The researcher collected data via the Teacher Beliefs Survey, a demographic questionnaire, and student achievement on the eighth-grade 2011 North Carolina End-of-Grade Mathematics Test for the purpose of this research. -- Data collected revealed that only 1 teacher met McCombs and Whisler's criteria for having learner-centered beliefs and 2 teachers were identified as non-learner-centered. There was no statistical significant difference between teacher beliefs and student achievement on the eighth-grade End-of-Grade Mathematics Test, but there was a difference in teachers' beliefs about non-learner-centered ideas in higher-performing districts than teachers' beliefs about non-learner-centered ideas in lower-performing districts, but not enough to be considered significant.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research study was to increase the overall achievement gains of my students who are currently receiving overall grades below a 69% in my middle school mathematics class by promoting parental involvement. The purpose of my action-research study was to answer the following three research questions: 1. What changes occur in students' test scores and overall grades when a variety of parental contacts are made over a six-week period? 2. How can I promote parental involvement? 3. What can I do to educate parents on how to become more effectively involved in their child's education? To answer these questions I selected ten parents, whose children were currently receiving grades below a 69% in 7th grade mathematics and who have not contacted me after the first nine weeks of the semester. I used three different methods to contact the parents, phones call, emails, and notes in students' planners. All three methods showed a lack of parental feedback and involvement. Nevertheless, five students showed an increase in the second marking period, four showed a decrease, and one stayed the same.

Book excerpt: Educators across the United States have searched for avenues to improve students' mathematics achievement since the publication of A Nation at Risk (National Commission on Excellence in Education, 1983) which reported that American students were behind students in other countries academically. Recent legislation, No Child Left Behind (2001), continues to address the need for improvement in mathematics among K-12 students. A possible intervention in middle school is to incorporate parental involvement. Numerous researchers (Colombo, 2006; Desimone, 1999; Epstein, 2008; Flynn, 2006; Henderson & Berla, 1994; Sheldon & Epstein, 2005; Wherry, 2006) have demonstrated the positive outcomes of parental involvement on children's education. This construct was investigated by analyzing the effects of math workshops for parents of eighth grade students on student math achievement and anxiety levels. Two theories form the foundation for the study: (a) Epstein's (1987) Theory of Overlapping Spheres which describes the behavioral practices of parental involvement and (b) Hoover-Dempsey and Sandler's (1995, 1997) Model of Parental Involvement, which is based on psychosocial constructs that affect the relationship between parental involvement and students' successes. A Nonequivalent Control-Group design and a Static-Group Comparison Design were used in the study with a sample of 105 eighth grade math students and their parents. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was conducted for hypothesis one and a Two-Sample t-test was employed for hypothesis two. These statistical measures revealed no significant difference between eighth grade students' math achievement and math anxiety levels for students whose parents attended math workshops, and those students whose parents did not attend math workshops.
