Book excerpt: Kashmir, the northern-most state of India, boasts a language which challenges every field of linguistics, be it modern, generative, comparative, synchronic and diachronic. Although Kashmiri is only spoken by approximately three million people, its syntax, similar to Germanic and other verb-second languages, has raised many significant issues within current generative theories proposed by Chomsky and other prominent linguists. The book contains extensive description of the syntax, morphology, agreement and pronominal clitics of Kashmiri. Its originality lies in the fact it presents a wealth of information on a relatively unknown verb-second language and will help to clarify certain key issues in the current theories.

It is spoken in the valley of Kashtawar, lying to the southeast of the valley of Kashmir on upper Chinab. Sir. G.A Grierson, in fact talks of it as being the only true dialect of Kashmiri. However, the dialect has not been analysed till date within the descriptive framework. This book has attempted to develop a complete morphological profile of nouns of Kashtawari with respect to person, number, gender and case, vis-a-vis modern descriptive model. It also presents a linguistic profile of the place enumerating the various languages spoken in the area besides Kashtawari. This book also talks about the various concepts, principles and theories required for the morphological analysis of a language

Download or read book Argument structure in Kashmiri written by Saartje Verbeke and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Argument structure of Kashmiri is a study of the grammatical patterns one finds in the Indo-Aryan language Kashmiri. Kashmiri shows several unique linguistic features which sets it aside from more well-known Indo-Aryan languages. The book focuses on the grammatical relations and their coding in case marking and in verb agreement. The occurrence of pronominal suffixation in Kashmiri is related with the universal feature of referential hierarchies and the phenomenon of verb second word order. The grammatical structure of Kashmiri is situated in the linguistic area of the Himalayas, and minority languages in the area are discussed as well. The book draws on a wealth of examples from field work, local manuscripts and secondary sources and it is a first comprehensive overview of the grammatical features of Kashmiri from a typological point of view.
Book Synopsis Kashmir's Right to Secede by : Matthew J. Webb
Download or read book Kashmir's Right to Secede written by Matthew J. Webb and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-02-13 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A separatist conflict has been ongoing in India-administered Kashmir since 1989. Focusing on this region, this book critiques the existing normative theories of secession, and offers a comprehensive examination of the right of sub-groups to secede. The book looks at the different accounts of the moral right to secede, and assesses both the theories themselves as well as the claims of those who want to separate Kashmir from India. Included within this analysis are the three main types of normative theory that ground the right of groups to secede in principles of national self: determination, consensual governance and rectificatory justice. Previous studies have discussed the causes behind the uprising in Kashmir against Indian authority and examined some of the legal and geo-political implications of the conflict for India and the wider region. This book provides a new way of looking at the Kashmir dispute, by asking what these theories tell us about Kashmir, and in turn what the example of Kashmir allows us to learn about these theories. It is of interest to students and scholars of South Asian Politics and International Relations.

Book Synopsis Lexical Anaphors and Pronouns in Selected South Asian Languages: by : Barbara C. Lust

This book was released on 2011-08-02 with total page 924 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on language universals and research on linguistic typology are not antagonistic, but rather complementary approaches to the same fundamental problem: the relationship between the amazing diversity of languages and the profound unity of language. Only if the true extent of typological divergence is recognized can universal laws be formulated. In recent years it has become more and more evident that a broad range of languages of radically different types must be carefully analyzed before general theories are possible. Typological comparison of this kind is now at the centre of linguistic research. The series empirical approaches to language typology presents a platform for contributions of all kinds to this rapidly developing field. The distinctive feature of the series is its markedly empirical orientation. All conclusions to be reached are the result of a deepened study of empirical data. General problems are focused on from the perspective of individual languages, language families, language groups, or language samples. Special emphasis is given to the analysis of phenomena from little known languages, which shed new light on long-standing problems in general linguistics. The series is open to contributions from different theoretical persuasions. It thus reflects the methodological pluralism that characterizes the present situation. Care is taken that all volumes be accessible to every linguist and, moreover, to every reader specializing in some domain related to human language. A deeper understanding of human language in general, based on a detailed analysis of typological diversity among individual languages, is fundamental for many sciences, not only for linguists. Therefore, this series has proven to be indispensable in every research library, be it public or private, which has a specialization in language and the language sciences.
