Download or read book Measurement of the A-dependence of the EMC Effect and R in Deep-inelastic Electron Scattering from Nuclei written by and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Significant differences in the inelastic structure functions of Fe, Al, and deuterium nuclei have recently been observed in muon and electron scattering experiments. This has been interpreted as a distortion of the quark momentum distributions in bound nucleons. To study the A-dependence of this effect, we have measured differential cross sections for the inelastic scattering of electrons from deuterium, He, Be, C, Al, Ca, Fe, Ag, and Au over a large kinematic range (x values between 0.09 and 0.9 and Q2 values of 2, 5, 10, and 15 (GeV/c)2). The Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) provided electrons with incident energies (E) ranging from 8 to 24.5 GeV. The SLAC 8-GeV/c spectrometer was used at 23 settings to detect electrons with energies (E') from 3.1 to 8.4 GeV scattered at angles [theta] between 11 and 23°.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements of R for deuterium, He, Al, Fe and Au were made at Q2 = 5 (GeV/c)2 and x = 0.3, 0.5 and 0.7. An indication of a possible A-dependence of R has been found which would result in large differences among sigma/sup A//sigma/sup d/, F2/sup A//F2/sup d/ and F1/sup A//F1/sup d/. 7 references, 4 figures.

Book Synopsis Inclusive Inelastic Electron Scattering from Nuclei by :
Download or read book Inclusive Inelastic Electron Scattering from Nuclei written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inclusive electron scattering from nuclei at large x and Q^ is the result of a reaction mechanism that includes both quasi-elastic scattering from nucleons and deep inelastic scattering from the quark consitituents of the nucleons. Data in this regime can be used to study a wide variety of topics, including the extraction of nuclear momentum distributions, the influence of final state interactions and the approach to _v-scaling, the strength of nucleon-nucleon correlations, and the approach to x- scaling, to name a few. Selected results from the recent experiment E02-019 at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility will be shown and their relevance discussed.

Book Synopsis Deep Inelastic Scattering And Related Phenomena by : Giulio D'agostini
Download or read book Deep Inelastic Scattering And Related Phenomena written by Giulio D'agostini and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1997-03-15 with total page 814 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This workshop is the fourth of a series initiated in Durham (March 93), followed by Eilat (February 94) and Paris (April 95). The large interest and the great inflow of experimental data, coming mainly from HERA, are some of the reasons behind the decision to have this annual meeting, presently the most important one for this area of research. During the workshop, experimental results and theoretical aspects have been reported on subjects, which have been organised by working groups on: 1) hadron structure functions; 2) photoproduction and photon structure; 3) diffractive interactions; 4) hadronic final states; 5) spin effects in lepton nucleon scattering; 6) special session on theoretical advances. While the contributions to the working groups offer hot material for specialists, the reports by the conveners, as well as other contributions to the plenary sessions, offer to nonspecialists a complete overview of this research field.
Book Synopsis Electron Scattering From Complex Nuclei V36B by : Herbert Uberall
Download or read book Electron Scattering From Complex Nuclei V36B written by Herbert Uberall and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1971 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electron Scattering from Complex Nuclei, Part B is a three-chapter text that explores the excitation of the nucleus to bound levels and the nucleus breakup through particle emission from continuum states. The first chapter discusses the inelastic scattering to nuclear levels, the giant resonances, the concepts of radiative corrections, and the phase shift analysis for inelastic scattering. The subsequent chapter concerns the quasi-elastic continuum and the observations of the nuclear decay products. The last chapter presents special topics on electron scattering, such as dispersion and exchange corrections, sum rules, and isospin effects. Physicists, researchers, and graduate students will find this book invaluable.

Download or read book Deep-inelastic Lepton Scattering by Nuclei. The Pion-exchange Model written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quark constituents of nucleons were discovered in deep-inelastic electron scattering. It is not surprising therefore that the nuclear effects in deep-inelastic lepton scattering first observed by the European Muon Collaboration (EMC) have spawned many suggestions of revolutionary changes in our views of nuclear structure. Perhaps quarks play a far more active role in nuclear dynamics than the conventional theory provides. Before following the natural appeal of radical conclusions we believe it is important to examine in quantitative detail the consequences of the conventional nuclear model, in which the nucleon-nucleon potential features a one-pion exchange tail at large distances, an intermediate range attraction dominated by two-pion exchange and a strong short-range phenomenological repulsion. For this purpose let us assume that quarks are strictly confined to single hadrons, and that the quark structure of the hadrons in a nucleus is not affected by their environment. These assumptions allow a consistent description of deep-inelastic lepton-nucleus scattering, and the quantitative consequences agree well with available data. 15 refs.

Book Synopsis Electromagnetic Response of Atomic Nuclei by : Sigfrido Boffi
Download or read book Electromagnetic Response of Atomic Nuclei written by Sigfrido Boffi and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the structure and dynamics of atomic nuclei in terms of nucleons, pions, and quarks, all within a unified treatment of the nuclear response to an electromagnetic probe. The basic formalism is presented to describe the electromagnetic field and its interaction with nuclear matter for both real and virtual photons. Nuclear response is then analyzed in terms of structure functions in the case of inclusive and semi-inclusive inelastic electron scattering. The discussion covers pion production and one- or two-nucleon emission and compares the results with available data. The formalism is also extended to incident polarized electrons, polarized targets and nuclear recoil polarization. It contains a comprehensive description of photonuclear reactions at intermediate energies and a review of experimental data and previous theoretical approaches.
Book Synopsis Deep Inelastic Positron-Proton Scattering in the High-Momentum-Transfer Regime of HERA by : Ulrich F. Katz
Download or read book Deep Inelastic Positron-Proton Scattering in the High-Momentum-Transfer Regime of HERA written by Ulrich F. Katz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-09-04 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About three decades after the first experiments on deep inelastic lepton hadron scattering began to investigate the structure of hadrons, the history of this fruitful field of particle physics continues in the broad spectrum of research performed at the electron and positron proton collider HERA at DESY, where the multipurpose detectors ZEUS and H1 access ep scattering at a center of mass energy of 300 GeV and explore as yet uncharted kinematic realms of deep inelastic scattering. After the first years of data taking at HERA, each of the experiments has collected a total of roughly 40 pb 1 of e+p data, yielding sensitivity to deep inelastic e+p interactions at high four momentum transfers, Q2, where typi cal cross sections drop into the subpicobarn regime. This kinematic domain is characterized by electroweak unification, manifesting itself most markedly in the neutral and charged current cross sections, which approach an equal order of magnitude as Q2 rises above the square of the W and Z masses. Consequently, HERA allows, for the first time, studies of both types of pro cesses simultaneously with the same initial state conditions and in the same detector, and thus we can investigate the interplay of electroweak and strong forces governing the respective cross sections.
