With Hitler and Tojo running rampant across the globe, and with the world falling apart around them, it will be up to the men and women of the Sunset Detective Agency and investigator, Samuel Dalhart, to come up with the answers to the most complex series of disappearances ever to hit the glittered sidewalks of Los Angeles. Coming to the defense of a Hollywood legend centered in the sights of not only the L.A. Police Department, but J. Edgar Hoover himself, Dalhart and his band of investigators must clear the greatest star of the century, Charlie Chaplin, against the assault of law enforcement looking for someone to blame, and the "Little Tramp" is their target. With a huge cast of Hollywood legends rivaling any movie script, the trail that is followed leads to the inescapable conclusion that something has arrived in Los Angeles and a most evil and ancient legend has come with it. With cameos from the most achieved actors of their time, the stars themselves become embroiled in an unbelievable reality that has escaped the very pages of Universal Studio's most famous horror movies. Miriam Feldman is ditching her shapewear and finally letting her magic fly free. When Miri was a teen, her parents were murdered by magic assassins. These days, her aggressively normal existence as a law librarian at a boring firm has excellent medical insurance and won’t get her daughter killed. But when her bestie, her ride-or-die, gets tangled up with some vampires and goes missing, Miriam unleashes the rare and powerful shadow magic she’s kept hidden. It’s heady, liberating—and totally dangerous. Now in a race against time to save her friend, this single mom is descending into the spiderweb of the secret supernatural community where not knowing the rules is a fast-track to a painful end. Her guide? A grumpy French wolf shifter with a particular set of skills, a baffling drive to protect Miri at all costs, and the infuriating habit of constantly disagreeing with her. He may mock her To-Do lists, but he’s learned firsthand that her shadow magic literally packs a hell of a punch. The tricky thing about shadows, though, is the past casts a long one, and if Miri isn’t careful, those magic assassins will come back for the one who got away—and she’ll lose everything. Fans of Jana DeLeon, Robyn Peterman, and KF Breene, will adore Miri, a smart older heroine with zero effs left to give! Get reading now!

After the massacre of his people, Damien Dreadfire leads a patchwork army of unlikely allies against the Kingdom of Betanthia. The alliance teeters on the edge of a knife, as old rivalries between clans threaten to tear it apart. With the help of his trusted friend, Einarr, and a strange mystic, Damien launches a bold offensive that will decide the future of the free lands. Short on time, and even shorter on men, the fate of a once vibrant culture and its people rests on the outcome of the next battle. Meanwhile, Betanthia's crown prince, Gareth Bethard, faces dangers of his own. With his family coming apart at the seams and a growing conspiracy afoot, he tries desperately to hold everything together. Even as Gareth grapples with inner demons, he must learn to take up his father's mantle as the protector of civilization and defeat Damien's invading horde. It's only the fate of a thousand-year dynasty resting on his shoulders, after all.

Book excerpt: "A volume for a lifetime" is how The New Yorker described the first of Donald Culross Peatie's two books about American trees published in the 1950s. In this one-volume edition, modern readers are introduced to one of the best nature writers of the last century. As we read Peattie's eloquent and entertaining accounts of American trees, we catch glimpses of our country's history and past daily life that no textbook could ever illuminate so vividly. Here you'll learn about everything from how a species was discovered to the part it played in our country’s history. Pioneers often stabled an animal in the hollow heart of an old sycamore, and the whole family might live there until they could build a log cabin. The tuliptree, the tallest native hardwood, is easier to work than most softwood trees; Daniel Boone carved a sixty-foot canoe from one tree to carry his family from Kentucky into Spanish territory. In the days before the Revolution, the British and the colonists waged an undeclared war over New England's white pines, which made the best tall masts for fighting ships. It's fascinating to learn about the commercial uses of various woods -- for paper, fine furniture, fence posts, matchsticks, house framing, airplane wings, and dozens of other preplastic uses. But we cannot read this book without the occasional lump in our throats. The American elm was still alive when Peattie wrote, but as we read his account today we can see what caused its demise. Audubon's portrait of a pair of loving passenger pigeons in an American beech is considered by many to be his greatest painting. It certainly touched the poet in Donald Culross Peattie as he depicted the extinction of the passenger pigeon when the beech forest was destroyed. A Natural History of North American Trees gives us a picture of life in America from its earliest days to the middle of the last century. The information is always interesting, though often heartbreaking. While Peattie looks for the better side of man's nature, he reports sorrowfully on the greed and waste that have doomed so much of America's virgin forest.

When Miri steals a demon artifact for a client, she doesn't expect a magic curse. Failure to reverse it means the death of someone close to her, the end of her uneasy alliance with the head vampire, and open season on her family. So that sucks. Meanwhile, her screw-up on a dangerous fact-finding mission may have kicked her sexual tension with the wolf shifter in the balls. At least she’s not obsessing over it, since fighting through a maze of mind games, tested loyalties, and secrets is consuming all her energy. Glass half-full, right? Now armed with her trusty to-do list, she’s determined to multitask her way to victory like a magic badass. Yaas, Queen. Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE • NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A searing, post-apocalyptic novel about a father and son's fight to survive, this "tale of survival and the miracle of goodness only adds to McCarthy's stature as a living master. It's gripping, frightening and, ultimately, beautiful" (San Francisco Chronicle). • From the bestselling author of The Passenger A father and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the coast, although they don't know what, if anything, awaits them there. They have nothing; just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food—and each other. The Road is the profoundly moving story of a journey. It boldly imagines a future in which no hope remains, but in which the father and his son, "each the other's world entire," are sustained by love. Awesome in the totality of its vision, it is an unflinching meditation on the worst and the best that we are capable of: ultimate destructiveness, desperate tenacity, and the tenderness that keeps two people alive in the face of total devastation. Look for Cormac McCarthy's latest bestselling novels, The Passenger and Stella Maris.

If you liked the Magnificent Seven, you'll love the Rock Creek Six! Six elite Confederate soldiers band together after the War Between the States, hiring out their guns to protect lawless towns. Violence is all they know, until they make their way to Rock Creek, Texas. Rico has always been called "the Kid" by the other members of the Rock Creek Six. Though he can't hit much with a gun, he is deadly with a knife—and with women. But like all the others, Rico has secrets that come back to haunt him. Lily Fortier arrives in Rock Creek with secrets of her own. After winning the local saloon in a poker game, she decides to create for herself the life she's always dreamed of having. What she doesn’t need is a man, especially one as aimless and decorative as Rico. However, Rico proves himself to be much more than a pretty knife for hire. As they work together and make a home for both themselves and the two orphaned children who love them, the two begin to wonder if they might just be made for each other. Then a Pinkerton agent arrives in Rock Creek and drags Lily back to New Orleans to stand trial for murder. Will Rico be able to save her? Fans of Cynthia Roberts, Isabel Keats and Kirsty McCafrey will love this gritty, steamy, emotional tale of the Old West.
