Book Synopsis Disturbing the Universe by : Roberta S. Trites
Download or read book Disturbing the Universe written by Roberta S. Trites and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 1998-04-01 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Young Adult novel is ordinarily characterized as a coming-of-age story, in which the narrative revolves around the individual growth and maturation of a character, but Roberta Trites expands this notion by chronicling the dynamics of power and repression that weave their way through YA books. Characters in these novels must learn to negotiate the levels of power that exist in the myriad social institutions within which they function, including family, church, government, and school. Trites argues that the development of the genre over the past thirty years is an outgrowth of postmodernism, since YA novels are, by definition, texts that interrogate the social construction of individuals. Drawing on such nineteenth-century precursors as Little Women and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Disturbing the Universe demonstrates how important it is to employ poststructuralist methodologies in analyzing adolescent literature, both in critical studies and in the classroom. Among the twentieth-century authors discussed are Blume, Hamilton, Hinton, Le Guin, L'Engle, and Zindel. Trites' work has applications for a broad range of readers, including scholars of children's literature and theorists of post-modernity as well as librarians and secondary-school teachers. Disturbing the Universe: Power and Repression in Adolescent Literature by Roberta Seelinger Trites is the winner of the 2002 Children's Literature Association's Book Award. The award is given annually in order to promote and recognize outstanding contributions to children's literature, history, scholarship, and criticisim; it is one of the highest academic honors that can accrue to an author of children's literary criticism.

Download or read book Britain's Empire written by Richard Gott and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2022-01-04 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A magisterial history of resistance to the rising of the British empire As the call for a new understanding of our national history grows louder, Britain’s Empire turns the received imperial story on its head. Richard Gott recounts the long-overlooked narrative of resisters, revolutionaries and revolters who stood up to the might of the Empire. In a story of almost continuous colonialist violence, Britain’s crimes unspool from the beginning of the eighteenth century to the Indian Mutiny, spanning the globe from Ireland to Australia. Capturing events from the perspective of the colonised, Gott unearths the all-but-forgotten stories excluded from mainstream histories.

Download or read book Becoming Mobius written by Dr Debra Kidd and published by Crown House Publishing. This book was released on 2015-06-10 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Becoming Mobius is about living with uncertainty. Uncertainty is a state of being that many people struggle with both in day-to-day life and in education; being uncertain has almost become a sin. If we are truly to have an education system that 'works', we need to accept that learning and life are not simple, and we need to engage with difficult and complex ideas. Focusing on the process of learning and teaching, Dr Debra Kidd posits the possibility that wondering and wandering teachers might impact greatly on a child's ability to live with and thrive among uncertainties. She asks of us, not only as teachers or researchers, but simply as human beings, what are the things that affect us, and how can we remain attuned to all their possibilities while still functioning? Taking cues from neuroscience, physi, anthropology and philosophy, particularly that of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, but also Hannah Arendt, Jacques Derrida, Michel Foucault and others, Dr Kidd explores the nature and purpose of education through a series of different lenses. Details, moments, interactions and relationships are put under the microscope and their effects on teaching and learning examined. Becoming Mobius started life as Debra Kidd's doctoral thesis and draws on her extensive classroom experience, her own observations and research, and a broad base of educational thought; including the work of Gert Biesta, Masny's Multiple Literacies and more. In Becoming Mobius each chapter is presented as a plateau and maps the complexities of teaching and learning. This is a journey through a landscape of education. It is not a straight route. It is not a cop-out. It is a means of living in, with and through complexity and multiplicity. It is an attempt to bring forward a fresh vision of education. This is an honest, challenging and incredibly profound book that makes you stop and think - deeply - about what you do, why you do it and the effect it has. You will never look at teaching in the same light again. For anyone interested in thinking deeply about education.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirteen Questions: Reframing Education's Conversation provides alternative answers to those questions about our educational system that have been answered up till now by an outmoded, conservative, educational agenda. Rather than resting comfortably on a sentimental vision of education's history to provide their answers, the authors take a realistic look at our current educational system and provide sound answers to the most difficult questions. 1. What are the basics and are we teaching them? 2. Who decides the forms schools have taken and who should decide? 3. Is it true that teachers aren't as good as they used to be? 4. Do students misbehave more than they used to? 5. What is good teaching, and how do we teach people to be good teachers? 6. Should the fact that we live in a democratic society make a difference in what our schools are like? 7. In what ways does gender affect the educational process? 8. In what ways does race affect the educational process? 9. In what ways does class affect the educational process? 10. What is the effect of media on the educational experience of children? 11. What have been the effects of the attempts to improve education over the last decade? 12. What's missing in the public conversation about education? 13. What are schools for and what should we be doing in the name of education?

Book Synopsis Teaching Against Global Capitalism and the New Imperialism by : Peter McLaren
Download or read book Teaching Against Global Capitalism and the New Imperialism written by Peter McLaren and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2005 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will address a number of urgent themes in education today that include multiculturalism, the politics of whiteness, the globalization of capital, neoliberalism, postmodernism, imperialism, and current debates in Marxist social theory. The above themes will be linked to critical educational praxis, particularly to teaching activities within urban schools. Finally, the book will develop the basis for a wider political project directed at resisting and transforming economic exploitation, cultural homogenization, political repression, and gender inequality. Recent and widespread scholarly attention has been given to the unabated mercilessness of global capitalism. Little opposition exists as capital runs amok, unhampered and undisturbed by the tectonic upheaval that is occurring in the geopolitical landscape that has recently witnessed the collapse of the Soviet Union and the regimes of the Eastern Bloc. As we examine education policies within the context of economic globalization, we attempt to address the extent to which the pedagogy and politics of everyday life has fallen under the sway of what we identify as cultural and economic imperialism. Finally, the book raises a number of urgent questions: What are the current limitations to educational reform efforts among the educational left? What are some of the problems associated with certain developments within postmodern education? How can a return to Marxist theory and revolutionary politics revitalize the educational left at a time when capitalism appears to be unstoppable? What actions need to be taken in both local and global arenas to overcome the exploitation that the globalization of capital has wreaked upon the world?
