A literature search and a pedestrian survey failed to locate any prehistoric, historic, or architectural sites within the project right-of-way.

Book excerpt: An extensive reconnaissance level survey designed to locate and to describe cultural resources within selected areas of Lake Dardanelle and Ozark Lake, Arkansas, was conducted for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Little Rock, by Archeological Assessments, Inc., in the summer and fall of 1985. This project examined some 5,797 acres within Lake Dardanelle and 4,290 acres in Ozark Lake. Lands investigated included all fee-owned land within Ozark Lake as well as all public use areas and selected of shoreline within Lake Dardanelle. The effort involved an extensive background and literature review, geomorphological reconnaissance, pedestrian survey, artifact analysis, and data synthesis. A total of 93 sites ranging in cultural affiliation from the Early Archaic Period to the Historic Period were examined. A discussion of site distribution within this portion of the Arkansas River Valley is presented. (Author).

Book excerpt: Formed in 1820, Phillips County was named for Sylvanus Phillips, an early settler; Helena, the county seat, was named for Phillip's daughter and was incorporated in 1833. Helena was a major river town and was the economic and social center of the region. Lumber mills, cotton-oil mills, railroads, and river traffic contributed to a thriving economy. Helena's various ethnic groups played an important role in society and commerce, including African Americans, Chinese, Lebanese, Greek, Italian, and others. Situated on the Mississippi River and the southern tip of Crowley's Ridge, Helena's history includes Hernando de Soto, Jacques Marquette, and seven confederate generals. The rich alluvial soil along the river attracted wealthy planters who transformed the forests into productive plantations and luxurious homes. In more recent years, Phillips County has suffered the loss of jobs and a declining population, resulting in a struggling economy.

Book excerpt: This report documents a cultural resources intensive survey of an approximately 13+ acre tract of land located near the City of Marion, Crittenden County, Arkansas. The tract is within the direct impact area of a proposed lake that will be part of the River Trace, Inc. housing development. At the request of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Memphis District, investigations within the permit area included a cultural resources background and literature search and archaeological intensive survey and artifact analysis, which was conducted by Garrow and Associates, Inc. under Purchase Order No. DACW6690M1111. The study area consists of an irregular parcel of land located in a relict Mississippi River channel. The are is presently situated in a swale between low ridges, and was part of Marion Lake until the early twentieth century. Properties immediately surrounding the project area are currently being developed as part of the proposed River Trace, Inc. development. A review of the Arkansas Archeological Survey state site files, Crittenden County Library, and Crittenden County Courthouse Tax Assessment Records shows that no previously recorded cultural resources were located on or immediately adjacent to the study area. Systematic surface survey and subsurface testing recovered a total of five artifacts scattered across the entire 13 plus acreage, representing recent disposal and slope wash. The survey did not record and archeological sites or other significant cultural resources. No further work is recommended.
