Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Cruise on the Constitution: Around the World on Old Ironsides 1844 to 1847 After a pleasant journey of three days, I arrived at the town of Portsmouth (opposite to Norfolk), and took lodgings at the Craw ford House, where Captain Percival had taken rooms. On visiting the navy yard on Thursday, the 16th inst, I found Old Ironsides in the dry dock undergoing the operation of scraping, and having new copper put on where the old had been torn away. From the above date until the middle of April, 1844, the sound of the mallet and chisel was heard without intermission, and during this period of five months over of the public money was ex pended upon this favorite ship. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a training manual for members of the crew of the 1797 United States frigate Constitution, the world's oldest warship in commission. The venerable vessel, which earned its nickname, "Old Ironsides," during the War of 1812, is today permanently berthed in the Charlestown Navy Yard, across the Charles River from its building site in Boston, Massachusetts. The historic frigate is open to visitors year round, with tours provided by the crew, active sailors in the United States Navy. The lessons in the manual are divided among three groups, corresponding to the three skill levels of the tour guides, Basic, Advanced, and Master. In addition to the chronology and major events in the history of USS Constitution, the manual explains the historical contexts in which those events took place. The text is written in an engaging and accessible manner that will make it attractive to anyone interested in USS Constitution or in the early U.S. Navy in general.

Book Synopsis The 44-Gun Frigate USS Constitution by : Karl Heinz Marquardt
Download or read book The 44-Gun Frigate USS Constitution written by Karl Heinz Marquardt and published by Osprey Publishing. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Constitution was one of the US Navy's first six original frigates, ordered as a counter to the Barbary corsairs in the Mediterranean. Fast and heavily built, she was nominally rated as a 44 but mounted thirty 24-pdr and twenty-two 12-pdr cannon. Her most famous encounter, after which she became nicknamed 'Old Ironsides' due to British shot being seen bouncing off her hull, involved HMS Guerriere, which she smashed; the same treatment was meted out to HMS Java four months later. Now the oldest commissioned warship afloat in thw world, she is berthed in Boston Harbor. The 'Anatomy of the Ship' series aims to provide the finest documentation of individual ships and ship types ever published. What makes the series unique is a complete set of superbly executed line drawings, both the conventional type of plan as well as explanatory views, with fully descriptive keys. These are supported by technical details and a record of the ship's service history.
Book Synopsis Does the Constitution Follow the Flag? by : Kal Raustiala
Download or read book Does the Constitution Follow the Flag? written by Kal Raustiala and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bush Administration has notoriously argued that detainees at Guantanamo do not enjoy constitutional rights because they are held outside American borders. But where do rules about territorial legal limits such as this one come from? Why does geography make a difference for what legal rules apply? Most people intuitively understand that location affects constitutional rights, but the legal and political basis for territorial jurisdiction is poorly understood. In this novel and accessible treatment of territoriality in American law and foreign policy, Kal Raustiala begins by tracing the history of the subject from its origins in post-revolutionary America to the Indian wars and overseas imperialism of the 19th century. He then takes the reader through the Cold War and the globalization era before closing with a powerful explanation of America's attempt to increase its extraterritorial power in the post-9/11 world. As American power has grown, our understanding of extraterritorial legal rights has expanded too, and Raustiala illuminates why America's assumptions about sovereignty and territory have changed. Throughout, he focuses on how the legal limits of territorial sovereignty have diminished to accommodate the expanding American empire, and addresses how such limits ought&R to look in the wake of Iraq, Afghanistan, and the war on terror. A timely and engaging narrative, Does the Constitution Follow the Flag? will change how we think about American territory, American law, and-ultimately-the changing nature of American power.

Book excerpt: Three voices. Three acts of defiance. One mass injustice. The story of camp as you’ve never seen it before. Japanese Americans complied when evicted from their homes in World War II -- but many refused to submit to imprisonment in American concentration camps without a fight. In this groundbreaking graphic novel, meet JIM AKUTSU, the inspiration for John Okada’s No-No Boy, who refuses to be drafted from the camp at Minidoka when classified as a non-citizen, an enemy alien; HIROSHI KASHIWAGI, who resists government pressure to sign a loyalty oath at Tule Lake, but yields to family pressure to renounce his U.S. citizenship; and MITSUYE ENDO, a reluctant recruit to a lawsuit contesting her imprisonment, who refuses a chance to leave the camp at Topaz so that her case could reach the U.S. Supreme Court. Based upon painstaking research, We Hereby Refuse presents an original vision of America’s past with disturbing links to the American present.
Book Synopsis The Gun, the Ship, and the Pen: Warfare, Constitutions, and the Making of the Modern World by : Linda Colley
Download or read book The Gun, the Ship, and the Pen: Warfare, Constitutions, and the Making of the Modern World written by Linda Colley and published by Liveright Publishing. This book was released on 2021-03-30 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best Books of the Year: Financial Times, The Economist Book of the Year: The Leaflet (International Forum on the Future of Constitutionalism) Longlisted for the Cundill History Prize Profiled in The New Yorker New York Times Book Review • Editors’ Choice Vivid and magisterial, The Gun, the Ship, and the Pen reconfigures the rise of a modern world through the advent and spread of written constitutions. A work of extraordinary range and striking originality, The Gun, the Ship, and the Pen traces the global history of written constitutions from the 1750s to the twentieth century, modifying accepted narratives and uncovering the close connections between the making of constitutions and the making of war. In the process, Linda Colley both reappraises famous constitutions and recovers those that have been marginalized but were central to the rise of a modern world. She brings to the fore neglected sites, such as Corsica, with its pioneering constitution of 1755, and tiny Pitcairn Island in the Pacific, the first place on the globe permanently to enfranchise women. She highlights the role of unexpected players, such as Catherine the Great of Russia, who was experimenting with constitutional techniques with her enlightened Nakaz decades before the Founding Fathers framed the American constitution. Written constitutions are usually examined in relation to individual states, but Colley focuses on how they crossed boundaries, spreading into six continents by 1918 and aiding the rise of empires as well as nations. She also illumines their place not simply in law and politics but also in wider cultural histories, and their intimate connections with print, literary creativity, and the rise of the novel. Colley shows how—while advancing epic revolutions and enfranchising white males—constitutions frequently served over the long nineteenth century to marginalize indigenous people, exclude women and people of color, and expropriate land. Simultaneously, though, she investigates how these devices were adapted by peoples and activists outside the West seeking to resist European and American power. She describes how Tunisia generated the first modern Islamic constitution in 1861, quickly suppressed, but an influence still on the Arab Spring; how Africanus Horton of Sierra Leone—inspired by the American Civil War—devised plans for self-governing nations in West Africa; and how Japan’s Meiji constitution of 1889 came to compete with Western constitutionalism as a model for Indian, Chinese, and Ottoman nationalists and reformers. Vividly written and handsomely illustrated, The Gun, the Ship, and the Pen is an absorbing work that—with its pageant of formative wars, powerful leaders, visionary lawmakers and committed rebels—retells the story of constitutional government and the evolution of ideas of what it means to be modern.
