Book excerpt: The first John Grey historical mystery The theatres are padlocked. Christmas has been cancelled. It is 1657 and the unloved English Republic is eight years old. Though Cromwell's joyless grip on power appears immovable, many still look to Charles Stuart's dissolute and threadbare court-in-exile, and some are prepared to risk their lives plotting a restoration. For the officers of the Republic, constant vigilance is needed. So, when the bloody corpse of a Royalist spy is discovered on the dung heap of a small Essex village, why is the local magistrate so reluctant to investigate? John Grey, a young lawyer with no clients, finds himself alone in believing that the murdered man deserves justice. Grey is drawn into a vortex of plot and counter-plot and into the all-encompassing web of intrigue spun by Cromwell's own spy-master, John Thurloe. So when nothing is what is seems, can Grey trust anyone? 'Tyler juggles his characters, story wit and clever one liners with perfect balance' - The Times 'A cracking pace, lively dialogue, wickedly witty one-liners salted with sophistication . . . Why would we not want more of John Grey?' - The Bookbag

Book excerpt: England. 1600s. As the first of the battles of the English Civil War subside, the Souter family retreats to the family farm in Suffolk. As Josiah Souter slowly recuperates from the shocks of war, his father John tends him, along with others of their community and beyond, who have been bereaved or traumatised by their wartime experiences. It seems that life is getting back to normal. But it cannot last. The embers of the war flare again, and the country plunges once more into battle. For many at the farm, their friends and associates, the pull of war and their chosen cause is inescapable. But even as they fight, there is land to manage, communities to sustain. And of course, there is the small matter of England's future to be determined. As the battles rage, who will win their freedom and who will lose everything -- both on the battlefield, and at home? Cruel Necessity is a fast-paced and engaging story that gives readers a fascinating, detailed description of both the battlefield and domestic sphere at this crucial period in the UK's history. With a cast of engaging characters it will appeal not only to fans of history and historic novels, but to anybody who enjoys an engaging and immersive tale. Praise for Oliver Woodman 'Meticulous historical fiction'- Richard Foreman Oliver Woodman's working life gave him a wonderful training in the written and spoken word. But history was always a great love, as was communicating its fascination. Immersion in the seventeenth century began with childhood lectures over Sunday lunch from his father. Apart from recreating a luxuriant historical texture, Oliver Woodman's main achievement is to look at choices from different points of view and provide an insight into how attitudes and beliefs reflect the worlds into which we are born and live.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History is often presented in terms of a series of conquests and conflicts, a perpetual cycle of war and peace. As a result, there is rarely a focus on the socio-cultural dynamics and institutional mechanisms which maintain patterns of violence. This book examines the important questions which have often been ignored: how does war come to be seen as an acceptable way of solving conflict? How do combatants understand their roles in different situations of violence? What factors complicate the commonplace view that war is 'a cruel necessity'?

Book Synopsis Outsiders in the Greek Cities in the Fourth Century BC (Routledge Revivals) by : Paul Mckechnie
Download or read book Outsiders in the Greek Cities in the Fourth Century BC (Routledge Revivals) written by Paul Mckechnie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the fourth century BC the number of Greeks who did not live as citizens in the city-states of southern mainland Greece increased considerably: mercenaries, pirates, itinerant artisans and traders, their origins differed widely. It has been argued that this increase was caused by the destruction of many Greek cities in the wars of the fourth century, accompanied by the large programme of settlement begun by Alexander in the East and Timoleon in the West. Although this was an important factor, argues Dr McKechnie, more crucial was an ideological deterioration of loyalties to the city: the polis was no longer absolutely normative in the fourth century and Hellenistic periods. With so many outsiders with specialist skills, Alexander and his successors were able to recruit the armies and colonists needed to conquer and maintain empires many times larger than any single polis had ever controlled.
