Book excerpt: This report summarizes three of investigations: 1) studies of van der Waals collision dynamics, 2) laser spectroscopy study of rotational vibrational relaxations, and 3) angular correlations in chemical reactions. A cross molecular beam apparatus was used to study several van der Waals bond exchange reactions. These collisions involving extremely weak interactions were found to have product velocity distributions which resemble those from several ion molecular reactions which occur at very high collision energy. This led to the theoretical development of a scattering model which should be applicable to a wide range of reactive and inelastic collision processes at kinetic energies higher than the bond strengths. In another effort, laser induced fluorescence experiments were performed to measure the rotational and vibrational temperatures of molecular iodine seeded in beams of helium, argon, or nitrogen expanded from a supersonic nozzle. The results demonstrated the utility of seeded iodine fluorescence as a diagnostic for pulse shape and collisional relaxation in pulsed supersonic beams. Lastly, theoretical calculations dealing with rotational orientation in molecular collisions resulted in the formulation of a correlation analysis which offers a means to obtain information about collision dynamics that would otherwise be lost by averaging over the initial impact parameters and molecular orientations.

Focus of this research is the reaction between ozone and chlorine, which has been widely studied due its key role in the catalytic destruction cycle of ozone in the atmosphere. For this research, a new crossed molecular beam apparatus was successfully designed and constructed. The apparatus consists of independently rotating arms to allow for reactants to be collided at a wide range of angles, and therefore relative velocities, and can easily be adapted for use in numerous types of scattering experiments. Ozone was successfully created and trapped to produce a molecular beam, which has been characterized from a pinhole and slit nozzle. Book excerpt: This dissertation describes the use of a new molecular beam apparatus designed to use tunable VUV synchrotron radiation for photoionization of the products from scattering experiments. The apparatus was built at the recently constructed Advanced Light Source at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, a third generation 1-2 GeV synchrotron radiation source. The new apparatus is applied to investigations of the dynamics of unimolecular reactions, photodissociation experiments, and bimolecular reactions, crossed molecular beam experiments. The first chapter describes the new apparatus and the VUV radiation used for photoionization. This is followed by a number of examples of the many advantages provided by using VUV photoionization in comparison with the traditional technique of electron bombardment ionization. At the end of the chapter there is a discussion of the data analysis employed in these scattering experiments. The remaining four chapters are complete investigations of the dynamics of four chemical systems using the new apparatus and provide numerous additional examples of the advantages provided by VUV photoionizaiton of the products. Chapters 2-4 are photofragment translational spectroscopy studies of the photodissociation dynamics of dimethyl sulfoxide, acrylonitrile, and vinyl chloride following absorption at 193 mn. All of these systems have multiple dissociation channels and provide good examples of the ability of the new apparatus to unravel the complex UV photodissociation dynamics that can arise in small polyatomic molecules.

Book excerpt: A versatile crossed molecular beam scattering apparatus has been designed and constructed to study the gas-phase kinetics of transition metal-oxygen species. The apparatus consists of a compact and adaptable scattering chamber which contains the facilities to produce and monitor both a high temperature metal vapor beam and a permanent gas beam in a high vacuum environment. It is also equipped with a phase-sensitive, mass spectrometric detection system. Preliminary, low-resolution reactive scattering experiments were carried out. The principal results of these exploratory experiments are the following: (1) There is strong forward peaking in the laboratory coordinate system for the (Ba/N2O) system, with about 99% of the reaction exothermicity going into product internal excitation; and (2) there is reactive scattering in the forward direction in the laboratory system for the (Ce/N2O) system.
