Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Critique of Kant For the New Edition of the fifth volume of my History of Modem Philosophy, which comprises Fichte and his forerunners, I have written, as an "Introduction to Post-Kantian Philosophy," a Critique of Kant, which I herewith publish separately. The first four chapters are entirely new; the fifth gives in revised form the substance of the first chapter of the original volume on Fichte. I formerly thought it right, as well as suited to the plan of my work, to add a short critique of the Kantian philosophy to the history of the development of post-Kantian philosophy, - which in all its branches grows out of a criticism of the former, - and to reserve an exhaustive critique till the close of the whole, when the reader will have become acquainted with all the standpoints which attempt a solution of the Kantian problems, and which have thus exercised an influence upon the Kantian epoch. And I still hold this view, which is in keeping with the historic method. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Critical Philosophy of Immanuel Kant, Vol. 1 of 2 The object of this book is to give a connected view of the Critical Philosophy, showing the relations of the three Critiques to each other, and to the other works of Kant which may be regarded as illustrations or developments of his main argument. The first part, on the Critique of Pure Reason, deals with the same subject as my former work, entitled The Philosophy of Kant, but, except in a few passages, it is not a reproduction of it. Since the date of its publication, many important contributions to the study of Kant have been made in Germany and other countries. I wish especially to express my indebtedness to the writings of Dr. Vaihinger, Benno Erdmann, Cohen, Paulsen, Arnoldt, Stadtler, Staudinger, and Riehl; also of the late Professor Green and Professor Watson. In particular, Dr. Erdmann's publication of the Reflexionen Kant's has thrown much new light on the development of the Kantian philosophy, and Dr. Vaihinger's acute statement of the main Kantian in his Commentary is full of instruction and suggestion for every student. I have sometimes given references to these and other writers; but often I have found it impossible to recall or to trace what I owe to them, and must content myself in the main with this general acknowledgment of my obligations. I also owe much to the criticisms of my former book by various writers, particularly by Dr. Hutchison Stirling, by Mr. Balfour, and by Dr. Vaihinger; and I have attempted to meet them by giving a more careful and accurate statement of Kant's argument, and a fuller and more thorough estimate of its bearing and value. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commentary to Kant's Critique of Pure Reason The Critique of Pure Reason is more obscure and difficult than even a metaphysical treatise has any right to be. The difficulties are not merely due to defects of exposition; they multiply rather than diminish upon detailed study; and, as I shall endeavour to show in this Commentary, are traceable to two main causes, the composite nature of the text, written at various dates throughout the period 1772-1780, and the conflicting tendencies of Kant's own thinking. The Commentary is both expository and critical; and in exposition no less than in criticism I have sought to subordinate the treatment of textual questions and of minor issues to the systematic discussion of the central problems. Full use is made of the various selections from Kant's private papers that have appeared, at intervals, since the publication of his Lectures on Metaphysics in 1821. Their significance has not hitherto been generally recognised in English books upon Kant. They seem to me to be of capital importance for the right understanding of the Critique. Some apology is perhaps required for publishing a work of this character at the present moment. It was completed, and arrangements made for its publication, shortly before the outbreak of war. The printers have, I understand, found in it a useful stop-gap to occupy them in the intervals of more pressing work; and now that the type must be released, I trust that in spite of, or even because of, the overwhelming preoccupations of the war, there may be some few readers to whom the volume may be not unwelcome. That even amidst the distractions of actual campaigning metaphysical speculation can serve as a refuge and a solace is shown by the memorable example of General Smuts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Critique of Pure Kant: Or a Real Realism Vs, a Fictitious Idealism But now, yet, I am to add that, still that I have said that prove so and so and follows so and so, yet does the burden of proof not, after all, rest with the sceptic to prove the negative to an earlier posi tive, but with the doctrinaire Of the earlier positive doctrine to prove that earlier positive doctrine. And it is Kant's that is the earlier positive doctrine, namely, that, in external perception we perceive only another world than the one absolute as outly ing the mind; only another than the one at which the perception is primarily aimed. And hence it is with him rests the burden of proof, and to demonstrate his positive contention. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
