This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thesis explores issues relating to the secondary music examination curriculum in Hong Kong between 1998 and 2009. In 1998 the number of candidates taking ABRSM and TCL examinations was 50406 but HKALE and HKCEE, the candidate numbers were 18 at AL and 231 at CE level. This thesis seeks to explore reasons for the lack of interest and uptake by secondary school students of government music exams through an examination of the curriculum and proposed changes to it during the last 10 years. This research, therefore, arises to study music education 1998 - 2009 and in particular to focus on proposed "developments" for 2002 and 2005 both of which were rejected. By 2010 the AL examination had been cancelled and the CE remains unchanged. The thesis explores the marginalization of an area of the school curriculum. After a brief introduction to the research, chapter 2 gives a broad overview of education policy and curriculum development in secondary school music education in Hong Kong. Seven Education Commission Reports concerned with music education policy in secondary schools are examined. Chapter 3 is a more detailed study of music education and the music curriculum in secondary schools in Hong Kong in which some significant studies and surveys in the field are studied. The S.S.M.C. report provides a useful and supporting back up to avoid any double work. In addition, the way in which music is covered and operated in the curriculum in different cultural environments (using the examples of England and Wales and Singapore) has been examined. Chapter 4 discusses the issues raised from the research. Based on the information found, one of the main issues for this research is that the secondary school music teacher has the key role for a successful revolution in Hong Kong secondary music education. Chapter 5 considers the hypotheses and methodologies. The research methods used are direct description with a simple statistical approach. Research methods used for this study include 5-Likert scales, summarizing content and constant comparative analysis. Furthermore, some tables, figures and documents are provided as a supplement. Chapter 6 examines the data analysis. The results of this research are compared to the results of related researches in section 3.3. Feedback from target secondary school principals, music teachers, students and representative persons in the field is collected and reported. Chapter 7 is the analysis of findings and discussion. The key finding is that most of the secondary school music teachers in Hong Kong do not encourage their students to take the HKCEE / HKALE music examinations. This study finds that, as music is neglected at schools, it is reaching a weak position in Hong Kong secondary schools, and its curriculum is threatened. Chapter 8 gives the conclusions, recommendations for further research, limitations and significance of the study in terms of the principal theme. This is the first time any study has investigated the problem concerning secondary school music education in Hong Kong during the years from 1998 to 2009. The answer to the final question raised from this research, whether the Arts Education curriculum being introduced in 2005 is a good substitute for the subject, is still uncertain at this moment.

Book excerpt: This book provides critical insights into the interplay of sociocultural change and educational practices by elucidating the trajectory of Hong Kong’s early childhood music education system. It presents an extensive analysis of postcolonial music education in relation to globalization, westernization, cosmopolitanism, and nationalization. It makes contributions to the theoretical arguments that can be used to interpret the impact of China on the previously Western orientation of education in Hong Kong. This book also explicitly problematizes the theoretical foundations of mandated policies such as play-based learning and moral education in early childhood through music in Hong Kong and across the globe. The analysis of historical context, political influences, and education ideologies in Hong Kong’s early childhood education subsystem provides fertile ground for a thorough understanding of the meaning and implications of globalization in education at multiple levels. Many empirical-based discussions in this book reflect the ideologies, trends, and practices of music education globally. Framed by Bandura’s social cognitive theory, the empirical studies discussed in the book explore the self-efficacy and practices of education leaders and teachers, reflecting the contemporary challenges of music education. Ultimately, it makes a vital contribution by offering a new conceptual model of music teacher education within a globally resonant framework.

Book excerpt: Comprehensive and authoritative, this Handbook provides a nuanced description and analysis of educational systems, practices, and policies in Asian countries and explains and interprets these practices from cultural, social, historical, and economic perspectives. Using a culture-based framework, the volume is organized in five sections, each devoted to educational practices in one civilization in Asia: Sinic, Japanese, Islamic, Buddhist, and Hindu. Culture and culture identities essentially are civilization identities; the major differences among civilizations are rooted in their different cultures. This framework offers a novel approach to capturing the essence of the diverse educational systems and practices in Asia. Uniquely combining description and interpretation of educational practices in Asia, this Handbook is a must-have resource for education researchers and graduate students in international and comparative education, globalization and education, multicultural education, sociocultural foundations of education, and Asian studies, and for educational administrators and education policy makers.

The essential elements of music discussed include perception and creativity, sources and stimulation, and the integration of musical creativity in diverse cultures and participation. It focuses on three Chinese cities; Changsha and Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China, which have creative industries, and Shijiazhuang, which has cultural industries. Readers will gain insights into the introduction of creativity into the Chinese education system through music, particularly during the pandemic. The author analyses official documents, selected music textbooks adopted by schools, questionnaire surveys, and in-depth interviews with both students and teachers. These interviews reveal the underbelly of the dilemmas of introducing creativity into schools through music education. The volume will be of interest to those keen to increase creativity in teaching through music, and researchers in the fields of creativity and music education. It will also interest students undertaking Chinese, teacher education, or music.

Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2015 in the subject Didactics - Common Didactics, Educational Objectives, Methods, grade: 3.7, Education University of Hong Kong (The Education University of Hong Kong, Department of Curriculum and Instruction), course: TLS3003 Curriculum and Assessment, language: English, abstract: The focus of assessment for learning is to diagnose learning problems, as opposed to the measuring of students' attainment in assessment of learning. Assessment for learning involves two processes. First, teachers get evidence about students’ learning. Second, they analyze the evidence to locate where the students are in learning and how they should take their next steps. This essay will discuss what mechanism is suitable for assessment for learning in the music classroom, including in getting evidence, locating levels and substantial follow-up work.

Book excerpt: The focus of this study was on the identification of pupils' attitudes towards music education in secondary schools of Cyprus. There is a growing body of literature about the Cypriot music education scene, although the majority of studies to date have concentrated on primary school settings with less attention given to the secondary sector; thus, the purpose of this study was to address the current gap in the Cypriot music education literature as well as to contribute more generally towards research in the field of music education. A theoretical model was constructed in the light of previous literature in the field and in response to Bronfenbrenner'j influential ecological theory about child development. The model highlighted the influence of personal, social and educational aspects on the formation of pupils' attitudes and was used in the creation of the research instrument as part of the empirical enquiry within this thesis. A Pancyprian questionnaire was carried out with a sample of 2996 pupils aged between 12 and 18 years of age representing all of the districts of Cyprus in both Gymnasium and Lyceum schools. The questionnaire focussed on gathering pupils' perceptions about secondary music education and the subject of Music in school. Different personal and demographic factors were cross-examined in the data, including the effects of gender, district, experience, school type and school grade. Overall, pupils' attitudes were largely negative, since almost half of the participants provided unenthusiastic and unfavourable responses towards school Music (45.9%), while there was more positive feedback about private music tuition in Cyprus (69.3%). Pupils' attitudes were based on personal beliefs and views about the subject as well as levels of interest and knowledge gained from music lessons. The study showed that significant relationships exist among five key variables in the creation of pupils' attitudes, so female pupils, experienced pupils, Gymnasium pupils (especially those within Grade A) and pupils from the Lamaca district were more positive towards the subject of Music, in comparison with others.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled Socio-political Forces and Intended, Resourced and Implemented Curricula: Chinese Music in Hong Kong and Taipei Junior Secondary Schools Submitted by LAU Kai-chi, Anthony for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong, August 2006 Hong Kong and Taipei have similarities in their ethnic compositions, geographic locations, economic structures, and relationships with Mainland China. However, they also have significant differences in each of these spheres, and in other socio-political dimensions. Socio-political factors have had an impact on curriculum as well as on other domains of education. This thesis compares the intended, resourced and implemented curricula in Hong Kong and Taipei. Comparisons across place and across dimensions of curriculum help to identify the forces which are unique to particular locations and dimensions and the forces which are more generalisable. The thesis focuses on music in junior secondary schools, and is constructed around one main research question and two supporting questions. The main research question is "What is the nature and extent of Chinese music in the curricula of junior secondary schools in Hong Kong and Taipei, and what socio-political forces have determined these patterns?" This has two supporting research questions: (1) What is the nature and extent of Chinese music in the curriculum at the intended, resourced and implemented levels in both places? and (2) What are the roles and status of Chinese and non-Chinese elements in the curricula in the two places? The answers to these questions are then interpreted within the context of analysis of socio-political forces. This analysis is undertaken with the help of a set of conceptual models drawn from the literature on comparative education. The research methods included content analysis of two official syllabi and four sets of music textbooks, as well as interviews with syllabus designers, textbook publishers, and music teachers in Hong Kong and Taipei. The analysis centres on the curricular choices made regarding Chinese and non-Chinese music. This is a significant area of political, cultural and educational decision-making which is bound up with questions of national identity, allegiance and citizenship. The study argues that the overall process of curriculum development (from the intended official written curriculum to the resourced curriculum set out in textbooks, and then to the taught implemented curriculum) in the two cities has been influenced by similar socio-political forces. It also argues that the process is characterized by some similar and some varying complex patterns in the nature and extent of Chinese and non-Chinese music which is not adequately recognized in the existing literatures. The study contends that the national identity, preference of national and local cultures, national education, colonial education, and acceptances of, and relationships with, other cultures have played important roles in shaping the nature and extent of Chinese and non-Chinese elements in the music curriculum. iv DOI: 10.5353/th_b3685040 Subjects: Music - Instruction and study - China - Hong Kong Music - Instruction and study - Taiwan - Taipei Education, Secondary - China - Hong Kong - Curricula Educati

Book excerpt: (Uncorrected OCR) ABSTRACT Academic success in school and involvement in exercise and other subjects, such as physical education, arts and music are conflicting pursuits is a pervading notion of school administrators, teachers and parents in Hong Kong. If time is not spent on studying, that is thought to be wasted and to damage academic results. However, in recent years, school administrators, teachers and parents start to think highly of those subject, physical education, arts and music. In fact awards in these domains and an outstanding result is a good proof for schools and colleges to consider that how to choose a student. On the other hand, when parents consider to choose schools for their children, they also think of the schools' academic result, position of the schools, transportation how far from home to school, the famous brand name, schools' award on extracurricular activities, etc. There is an inter-relationship. So, extracurricular activities are one of the important items for both school and students. Participation in extracurricular activities would be gain and benefit students' academic performance. Music participation in some settings has improved English grades and scores on math tests. It has a certain level of impact on students' achievement. This study focuses on music extracurricular activities and the exploration of socioeconomic factors affecting students' participation in music extracurricular activities. The present study focuses on two secondary schools. One of them has over fifty years of history; the other one has twenty years of history. They are both active in promoting music education. They provide many different kinds of music extracurricular activities for their students. In the study, a quantitative survey is mainly used to find out the socioeconomic factors affecting students' participation in music extracurricular activities. A representative sample population of teachers is 60, and the sample population of students is 805 of two.
