Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, mixed-mode matrix fracture in graphite-epoxy composites was studied. Experimental investigation was conducted on a family of doubly side-notched unidirectional off-axis specimens. By varying the notch depth and the off-axis angle, a total of 28 fracture conditions of differing mixed-mode ratios were produced. Fracture analysis of the test data suggested that the total strain energy release rate is a suitable material condition for mixed-mode matrix cracking in graphite-epoxy composites.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mixed-mode matrix fracture in notched off-axis undirectional composite is investigated. First the problem is treated by an exact formulation based on elastic fracture mechanics. It is then simulated by a finite element model. Correlation with experiment suggests a fracture criterion based on total strain energy release rate as the fracture parameter. Keywords: Composite material, Graphite epoxy, Mixed mode fracture matrix cracking, Singular integral equation, Finite element simulation, Experiment analysis correlation.

Book excerpt: The reported research presents results on the fracture strength of graphite/epoxy (T300/5208) (0/+ or - 45) and (0/+ or - 45/90) symmetric laminates in the presence of angle cracks. The results indicate that the fracture strength can be predicted irrespective of the crack orientation if one uses the effective normal crack length in the equation developed for normal cracks. The fracture strength prediction is made using a two parameter (unnotched fracture strength and inferred dimensions of the damage zone) model, when the laminate is subjected to uniaxial loading along one of the material symmetry axes. The results indicate that the critical damage zone is not constant for the two laminates although it is independent of the crack orientation. (Author).

Book excerpt: The failure of composite laminates is invariably preceded by the cracking of matrix and interface, which appears as the cracking of unidirectional plies along the fibers and as delamination between plies. Since the ply cracking and delamination appear as macroscopically self-similar crack extension at least within each ply, they are amenable to the linear elastic fracture analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composites offer great promise as light weight and strong materials for high performance structures. One of the major advantages of these materials as compared with metals is the basic way in which heterogeneity resist crack extension. In a fiber/matrix composite system, the fibers tend to cause cracks to form at closer spacing and delay the formation of a large crack. The enhancement of local failure such as fiber breaking, matrix cracking and interface debonding further reduces the energy level which might have otherwise reached the point of catastrophic failure. Even though substantial tests have been made on composite materials, little has been gained in the understanding and development of a predic tive procedure for composite failure. There are fundamental difficulties associated with incorporating the nonhomogeneous and anisotropic prop erties of the composite into the continuum mechanics analysis. Additional uncertainties arise from voids and defects that are introduced in the composite during manufacturing. Even a small quantity of mechanical imperfections can cause a marked influence on the composite strength. Moreover, the interface properties between the fibers and matrix or bonded laminae can also affect the load transmission characteristics significantly. It would be impossible to establish predictive procedures for composite failure unless realistic guidelines could be developed to control the manufacturing quality of composite systems.

It covers concisely and systematically the experimental determination of basic elastic, strength and fracture properties of composites. Included are step-by-step procedures for materials processing, specimen manufacturing and instrumentation, test methods and data reduction methods. More than 130 schematics and photographs illustrate materials and test methods. An introductory chapter provides a theoretical foundation for the various aspects of experimental characterization covered. Numerous actual stress-strain curves and test results are included for illustration and comparison. The authors are recognized as leading authorities and educators in this field whose many prior publications comprise an important contribution to the knowledge base of advanced composite materials.
