Download or read book Iced written by Ray Shell and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2023-10-10 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Iced is a powerhouse. . . . Ray Shell writes beautifully. The story is heartbreaking. I kept putting it down and picking it up again—it won’t let me go.”—Maya Angelou A timeless tale of one man’s decline into the depths of addiction that is at both a shocking study of the addict’s life, and a deeply compelling and often uplifting tale of human love and loss. First published at the height of the crack cocaine epidemic thirty years ago, Ray Shell’s “powerhouse” (Maya Angelou) of a novel is as timely and relevant today as it was in 1994. It is the story of Cornelius Washington, a young upper-middle-class Black man blessed with burning talent and ambition, who enjoys experimenting with drugs—a dangerous pastime that gradually becomes a destructive addiction. Now a middle-aged crackhead, Cornelius ponders his life and the choices that have led him here. Written as a series of immersive stream of consciousness diary entries, Iced captures the despair and dashed dreams of a man caught between the harsh realities of his present and the adventures and upheavals of his past—a youth marked by a host of characters both intriguing and terrifying. A complicated man both compelling and maddening, sympathetic and defiant, Cornelius tries desperately to break free from his addiction, a struggle that ends in defeat time and time again. Despite the thought loops that lead to his bad choices, this painfully realistic character elicits hope for his survival, even though he will likely meet a devastating end. Resonant and haunting, illuminating and heartbreaking, Iced paints a portait of being Black in America, and the ways in which marginalized communities are targeted and ignored, left to suffer the consequences of policies made by powerful people ignorant and uncaring of their lives. It is a novel that transcends time, offering a glimpse of the past that is present in our lives today.

Book excerpt: Dandelion Through the Crack: The Sato Family Quest for the American Dream tells of a real Japanese-American family, formed both by ancestry and by the American way of life. We see mother, father, and children, and their challenges over seven decades. There are the extraordinary times of the Depression, wartime emergency, internment in the Poston "relocation" camp in the Arizona desert, oppressive prejudice, and the struggle to recover from near-total loss. But there are also many simple, almost-pastoral moments. The wise fables of the author's father -- tales of his old and new homelands and his haiku poetry -- are interwoven throughout. This is Kiyo Sato's first-person account of the family's struggles and triumphs. The result is a work of literary grace, emotional power, and historical and social importance.

A profound, achingly beautiful work of narrative nonfiction…The standard-bearer of embedded reportage.” —Matthew Desmond, author of Evicted In her classic bestseller, journalist Adrian Nicole LeBlanc immerses readers in the world of one family with roots in the Bronx, New York. In 1989, LeBlanc approached Jessica, a young mother whose encounter with the carceral state is about to forever change the direction of her life. This meeting redirected LeBlanc’s reporting, taking her past the perennial stories of crime and violence into the community of women and children who bear the brunt of the insidious violence of poverty. Her book bears witness to the teetering highs and devastating lows in the daily lives of Jessica, her family, and her expanding circle of friends. Download or read book A Crack in the Ceiling written by Brenda A. Gates Holt and published by LifeRich Publishing. This book was released on 2023-09-20 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if you secretly felt like God shortchanged you in some way or another and all your turns were predestined to be crooked ones? People around you talk about their purpose, passion, and giftedness, and you have yet to fill in the blanks. Maybe you grew up in an adverse environment that mangled and muddied your hopes and dreams. Perhaps you earnestly intended to break loose and break free but were too afraid to get out of the cage because a lion was guarding the door, and now lurking fears have immobilized you. Yes, you pray, attend church services, give, and do other things that may count as good stuff, but there is no fire in your bones, no passion in your praying, or peace in your soul; and that once upon a time inexplicable joy took a hike a long time ago. You know that there is a gulf between you and God, but you hesitate to discuss it with Him. Here’s inspiration for anyone feeling like they are stuck in neutral, in too deep or never had a chance in the first place. The author weaves compelling life stories into life lessons that we can all benefit from, especially if you struggle with staying on track, grappling with your past, familial upbringing and getting to the root of where you are out of sync spiritually and your walk with God. You’ll read how He can speak to us in glowing terms of nature or as simply as a crack in the ceiling.
Download or read book Crack House written by Harry Keeble and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-05-13 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bastard offspring of cocaine, crack first entered the UK in the early 1990s. By the end of the decade Britain's inner cities were in the midst of a crack epidemic, with users being responsible for a massive proportion of crime -- 95% of street shootings are crack-related, for example. Communities, especially in London, were crying out for help, but there were only two specialist units in the whole of the capital. One of them, Haringey Drugs Squad, embarked on a war on crack, aiming to shut down all 100 crack houses in their borough in one year. Amazingly, they did it. Even more amazingly, in the subsequent twelve months all black-on-black killings in Haringey ceased, and burglaries and muggings fell massively. Narrated by the leader of this team, CRACK HOUSEdescribes in heart-stopping fashion a series of breathtaking raids as well as arrests, beatings, stabbings and shootings. Featuring a colourful team of family men who regularly faced death, CRACK HOUSEtakes the reader into the dark heart of our cities' most violent and terrifying places, showing how the war on drugs can only be won by constant and forceful vigilance.
Book Synopsis Kernels from a Cracked Nut by : Foster Carlyle
Download or read book Kernels from a Cracked Nut written by Foster Carlyle and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-03-19 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is meant to be a humorous romp through experiences in the life of the author. That would be me and Im just a regular guy, but there is certainly a large portion of my conservative attitude thrown in as well. Which would in some eyes make me an irregular guy. Im well traveled, having spent a good deal of time in Europe both as a young man and in my later years. Call me a satirist or humorist if you want but I'm going to give you a bit of Midwestern born philosophy here. 1940 December 13 in Omaha, Nebraska, to be exact. All of these stories happened to me. Some are just my philosophy colliding with my sense of humor. Growing up there was a lot of laughter and good humor in our family and I firmly believe because of that Ive managed to get through my life to this point mostly in tack. My grand parents on my fathers side of our family were college professors of English and all of their children dabbled in writing. Nearly all of us were born in the Midwest and nearly all of us at one time have attempted to write for publication. A long time ago the family self published a small book titled "Kernels From A Cracked Nut". It was mostly a parody of famous poems. Most of the family members bought copies. No one else did. But Im a bit stubborn so Ive stolen the title from my family and this book is in fact the second, Kernels From a Cracked Nut. Enjoy!
