Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The protozoa are an eclectic assemblage of organisms encompassing a wide range of single-celled and multiple-celled colonial organisms lacking tissue organiza tion, but exhibiting remarkably refined biological behavior. In some modern classifications, they are classified as a subkingdom among the Protista (eukary otic single-celled organisms). Although they are not considered a formal cate gory by some taxonomists and some biologists consider the name inappropriate (inferring that they are the first unicellular animals, although some photosynthe size), it is still convenient to consider this group of organisms as an informal collection under the heading of protozoa. Their cosmopolitan distribution, sig nificant ecological role in mineral recycling and enhancement of carbon flow through lower trophic levels of food webs, and remarkable cellular adaptations to enhance survival in diverse environments make them significant organisms for biological investigation. In some cases, biologists are introduced to this group in first level courses or in invertebrate zoology, but never develop a full appreciation for the diverse and biologically sophisticated characteristics of these organisms. This book is intended as a survey of broad concepts in protozoan biology with an emphasis on comparative data. The focus is on the zoological aspects of the group. Topics more closely related to plantlike characteristics, as presented in books on phycol ogy, are not considered in detail here. A sound background in modern biology and an introduction to cellular biology will be helpful in understanding Chapters 15 and 16, which include a substantial amount of information on biochemistry.

Book excerpt: The book is a manual of protocols for working with protozoa with chapters written by experts in the study of various protozoa (both free living and parasitic). It is one of the few sources for media and isolation techniques for these organisms. The format allows removal of pages for photocopy for use as teaching or bench laboratory aids. Major sections include chapters related to isolation, cultivation, and cryopreservation of protozoa; ecological methods; fixation, staining, light and electron microscopic techniques for protozoa; molecular analysis of protozoa; and educational experiments and demonstrations using protozoa.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Protozoology HE present work is similar in its primary aim to that of its predecessor, Handbook of Protozoology in presenting introductory information on the common and representative genera of all groups of both free-living and parasitic Protozoa, to advanced undergraduate and graduate students in zoology in colleges and universities. With the expansion of courses in proto zoology at the University of Illinois and elsewhere, it seemed ad visable to incorporate more material for lecture and discussion, in addition to the enlargement of the taxonomic section. The change of the text-contents has, therefore, been so extensive that a new title, Protozoology, is now given. Chapters 1 to 6 deal with introduction, ecology, morphology, physiology, reproduction, and variation and heredity, of Proto zoa. Each subject-matter has been considered in the light of more recent investigations as fully as the space permitted. Selection of material from so great a number of references has been a very difficult task. If any important papers have been omitted, it was entirely through over-sight on the part of the author. Book excerpt: Protozoa and Human Disease is a textbook on medically important protozoa and the diseases they cause for advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, and professionals. It combines a taxonomic and medical approach and is therefore suitable for a parasitology, microbiology, medical, and public health readership. In addition to the basics such as morphological features, life cycles, and the clinical manifestations of the diseases, topics like the molecular and immunological basis of pathogenesis, metabolic pathways, specialized subcellular structures, ecology of disease transmission, antigenic variation, and molecular epidemiology are discussed for many of the protozoan pathogens. At the end of the book is an extensive glos

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Protozoology, Vol. 1 of 2: A Manual for Medical Men, Veterinarians and Zoologists The subject of Protozoology has, in recent years, shown a tendency to become divided into two sections. In the one the student's attention is directed chiefly to the study of free-living Protozoa, in the other to parasitic forms, more especially those which give rise to disease in man and domestic animals. Such a division, if it becomes absolute, cannot lead to a clear understanding of the group as a whole, for it is evident that without some knowledge of free-living Protozoa, from which they have been undoubtedly evolved, a wrong conception of parasitic forms will be obtained. As in other branches of science, specialization appears to be inevitable if any advance is to be made, but however specialized a student becomes, it is his duty to keep himself informed of any progress made outside his particular field. Anyone who wishes to make an intel ligent study of parasitic Protozoa must be acquainted with the funda mental principles of general Protozoology, and, indeed, with those of general Zoology, Physiology, and even other sciences. This is merely another way of stating the well-recognized fact that all sciences are inter dependent. On this account the student of the Protozoa which are pathogenic to man and domestic animals should have a sound knowledge of other parasitic Protozoa, and at least a good working knowledge of non-parasitic forms as well. Conversely, those who study free-living Protozoa should have a clear conception of the parasitic forms, for the extensive investigations of recent years have contributed so much to our knowledge that in many respects they are better known than their free living relations, particularly as regards the completeness of their life histories and the probable course of their evolution. In this manual the writer has attempted to present the subject of Protozoology in such a light that it will be of use to the zoologist who wishes to obtain information regarding the general principles of the subject and detailed knowledge of parasitic forms, and to medical men and veterinarians who are chiefly concerned with those Protozoa with which they have professionally to deal.
