Book excerpt: ABSTRACT.--It is commonly assumed that population estimates derived from trapping small mammals are accurate and unbiased or that estimates derived from different capture methods are comparable. We captured southern flying squirrels (Glaucomys volans) using two methods to study their effect on red-cockaded woodpecker (Picoides borealis) reproductive success. Southern flying squirrels were captured at and removed from 30 red-cockaded woodpecker cluster sites during March to July 1994 and 1995 using Sherman traps placed in a grid encompassing a red-cockaded woodpecker nest tree and by hand from red-cockaded woodpecker cavities. Totals of 195 (1994) and 190 (1995) red-cockaded woodpecker cavities were examined at least three times each year. Trappability of southern flying squirrels in Sherman traps was significantly greater in 1995 (1.18%; 22,384 trap nights) than in 1994 (0.42%; 20,384 trap nights), and capture rate of southern flying squirrels in cavities was significantly greater in 1994 (22.7%; 502 cavity inspections) than in 1995 (10.8%; 555 cavity inspections). However, more southern flying squirrels were captured per cavity inspection than per Sherman trap night in both years. Male southern flying squirrels were more likely to be captured from cavities than in Sherman traps in 1994, but not in 1995. Both male and female juveniles were more likely to be captured in cavities than in traps in both years. In 1994 males in reproductive condition were more likely to be captured in cavities than in traps and in 1995 we captured significantly more reproductive females in cavities than in traps. Our data suggest that population estimates based solely on one trapping method may not represent true population size or structure of southern flying squirrels.

Book excerpt: Southern flying squirrels (Glaucomys volans) are common and relatively abundant residents of Tennessee forests. They are often associated with mast-producing trees (ie. Quercus spp., oaks) and snags because they provide essential food resources and nest sites. However, they are widespread and occur in many different habitat types; including high-elevations in Eastern Tennessee where spruce-fir forests are dominant. Despite their extensive distribution, little is known about diel activity patterns or how factors such as elevation, temperature, or habitat composition influence timing and amount of activity. To better understand what influences activity, two passive monitoring methods (camera traps and acoustic detectors) were used to survey for southern flying squirrels across Middle and Eastern Tennessee. This effort resulted in 542 independent pictures and 183 independent calls of southern flying squirrels. Using the date and time stamps associated with each observation, southern flying squirrel activity persists throughout the night with slight peaks occurring about 2 hours after sunset and 4 hours prior to sunrise. The number of observations increased at sites with fewer total trees and larger diameter trees. Elevation did not significantly influence the timing of activity but southern flying squirrel activity occurred earlier after a one day drop in temperature and later after a one day increase in temperature, but did not shift following similar temperature changes over a 3day time span. Determining the influences of both abiotic and biotic factors on timing and amount of activity can help understand the mechanisms influencing animal behavior.

Book excerpt: Distribution, movement, behaviour, and habitat selection of a disjunct population of southern flying squirrel, Glaucomys volans, were investigated at three scales: population range, home range, and activity point. The distribution of G. volans in Nova Scotia was delineated by adding 32 new site records to seven historical ones. Site records were obtained from live trapping and public assistance. Using radio telemetry, 53 winter nests were located at five study areas. Tracking revealed that G. volans used on average five nests separated by a mean distance of 300 m over two-month tracking periods. Individuals nested solitarily and aggregated in mixed-sex groups of 2-10 individuals. Glaucomys volans shared home ranges and winter nests with northern flying squirrels, G. sabrinus. Vegetation at G. volans sites was analysed with GIS and ground-truthing. Glaucomys volans in Nova Scotia select species-rich mixedwood forests with red oak and eastern hemlock that have large, mature trees with cavities and standing dead wood.
