Thirty books were evaluated to determine if the portrayal of African Americans in picture books was realistic and positive. The books reviewed were selected from the reference source A to Zoo. Many librarians use this title to recommend materials to children and parents. The books were published during the 1980s and 1990s. Results showed that overall the portrayal of African Americans is positive, realistic and excludes stereotypical images. The study found that African Americans are writing and illustrating books about the African American experience. Overall the sample showed the language used was realistic and there was not a difference in speech between the African American and white characters. The illustrations depicted the diversity of the African American culture in features, hairstyles and complexion. The characterization was positive, complex and the character's actions mirrored real life. The stories were universal; they could have been the experience of any child"--Abstract.

Book excerpt: Several scholars have determined that African American students need opportunities to see their lived experiences, cultural heritages, and perspectives in texts to learn about themselves and provide affirmations about their lives (Bishop, 1990; Brooks & McNair, 2009; Harris, 1990). African American children's literature (AACL) provides African American students with opportunities to connect with characters who have similar experiences and perspectives as their own (Gangi & Ferguson, 2006). With AACL, students can make text-to-self connections and text-to-world connections (Bishop, 1990; Gangi, 2008; Harris, 1990). This multiple-case study examined the availability and quality of children's books that represent African Americans in two classroom libraries and read-alouds. Furthermore, this study evaluated the depth to which two classroom teachers discussed and explored African American social, historical, and cultural issues when reading AACL aloud to their fourth-grade students. Quantitative data (i.e., a priori content analysis, a priori observations and percentages of books) and qualitative data (i.e., content analysis, observations, field notes, and interviews) were gathered to examine these phenomena. This study demonstrated that Sims's (1982) seminal work on categories and qualities of books that include African American characters in classroom libraries remains relevant. However, three decades hence, the teachers in this study sparsely used AACL in their classrooms in spite of the multiple literary themes and concepts that were apparent throughout each book in the relatively small collection in each classroom. The research revealed that only 6% of the books in each classroom library represented African Americans. Of those, 7% percent (3 books) were social conscience books, 7% (3 books) were melting pot books, and 86% (37 books) were culturally conscious books. Only three books representing African Americans were read during the teachers' read-aloud sessions. The questions teachers asked during the read-alouds were descriptive and personal (Ada & Campoy, 2004). Of the 37 culturally conscious books, 28 were classified as diamonds (Walters 1996/1998) in that the authors' cultures matched the cultures portrayed in the books.

Book excerpt: To address the need for high-quality, culturally relevant diverse books and research critically analyzing nonfiction books, a three-phase content analysis examined the accessibility to and the cultural authenticity, accuracy, and relevance of award-winning children’s books. These nonfiction picture book biographies about contemporary/21st century African Americans were published from 2000-2016, contained within the Database of Award-Winning Children’s Literature, designated for elementary-age children, and in hardcover format. Grounded in multiple theories such as critical literacy, intersectionality, and cultural relevance and responsiveness, these theories addressed historical, political, social, and cultural aspects related to picture books. Key methodological features included two coder/analysts, coding matrices, open-ended response charts, intercoder collaborative discussion notes, reliability checks, and triangulation. The research revealed the following key findings: 1) few books received awards, and among the award-winners, few copies were found in urban libraries located in high poverty/African American population zip codes, 2) the presence of a significant amount of authentic African American cultural content appeared to be directly related to a book with a focal subject/main character identified as an African American and/or having an African American illustrator, 3) males dominated as illustrators and focal subjects/main characters, 4) as a group, the books provided an imbalance in the depiction of family structures, and 5) two award-winning books were found to be culturally authentic, accurate, and relevant. These findings are significant because they serve as evidence of the continued need for access to high-quality, relevant children’s books about African Americans that present a balanced African American experience.

Book excerpt: In this book the authors describe their strategies for critically reading global and multicultural literature and the range of procedures they use for critical analyses. They also reflect on how these research strategies can inform classrooms and children as readers. Critical content analysis offers researchers a methodology for examining representations of power and position in global and multicultural children’s and adolescent literature. This methodology highlights the critical as locating power in social practices by understanding, uncovering, and transforming conditions of inequity. Importantly, it also provides insights into specific global and multicultural books significant within classrooms as well as strategies that teachers can use to engage students in critical literacy.
