Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost a half century after his death in 1953, the Welsh author Dylan Thomas continues to capture the attention of scholars and critics. Though he attained some measure of fame before he died, he never enjoyed financial prosperity. His life was plagued with difficulties of all kinds, and he was only 39 years old at the time of his death. Some of his works, such as Fern Hill and Do not go gentle into that good night are frequently included in anthologies, and Thomas is now often considered one of the most important and original poets of the 20th century. During his trips to the United States, he read his works to large audiences on college campuses. He also made a number of radio broadcasts and recordings, and his moving voice made scores of listeners respond emotionally to his poems. Though Dylan Thomas has earned his place in literary history, readers often find his poems difficult to understand. This reference book is a valuable guide to his life and work. Because his writings are so very much a product of his troubled life, the volume begins with an insightful biography that provides a context for understanding Thomas's works. The second section then systematically overviews his works. While his poems receive much attention, the section also includes discussions of his prose works, his filmscripts, and his broadcasts. A third section then surveys the critical and scholarly response to his writings, with separate chapters detailing his reception in Wales, England, and North America. A selected bibliography lists editions of Thomas's works, along with the most important general studies of his writings.

Book excerpt: A selective list of publications for the period, offering some 25,200 entries (no annotations) arranged by nationality and linguistic groups. Most entries concern literary currents in drama since the last third of the 19th century, playwrights who lived at least part of their lives in the 20th century, noted directors, and performance theory. For students and scholars of modern dramatic literature. While annual supplements of recent publications appear in the journal Modern Drama, new compilers took a publication date of 1991 as their starting point for listings, leaving some 2,000 items collected after 1992 appearing only in this volume. Book Synopsis A Bibliographical Guide to Twenty-four Modern Anglo-Welsh Writers by : John Harris
Download or read book A Bibliographical Guide to Twenty-four Modern Anglo-Welsh Writers written by John Harris and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the most detailed guide in existence to a significant portion of the now extensive English-language literature of Wales. Two dozen major writers, who are generally associated with the Anglo-Welsh literary renaissance, are covered here. Some, like Dylan Thomas, are internationally known figures who have been the subject of bibliographies: in these cases the treatment here is the most up-to-date and comprehensive yet published. Others, less well-known outside Wales, are given full bibliographical treatment for the first time. The volume will therefore be indispensable to students and teachers of literature in English at all levels. The bibliography lists publications by and about each chosen writer. Primary sections record the writer's monographic output - in all editions and translations - as well as uncollected contributions to books, periodicals and newspapers. Secondary lists include critical and biographical studies of each writer: independent monographs, sections of books, periodical essays and academic theses. Two important sections preface the individual author bibliographies, one covering anthologies of Anglo-Welsh poetry and prose, the other a range of general critical and background studies. In all, this bibliography, with close on 6,000 selectively annotated entries, provides an indispensable reference guide to a developing area of literary and cultural research.

Download or read book Against Love written by Laura Kipnis and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2004-09-14 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A polemic against love that is “engagingly acerbic ... extremely funny.... A deft indictment of the marital ideal, as well as a celebration of the dissent that constitutes adultery, delivered in pointed daggers of prose” (The New Yorker). Who would dream of being against love? No one. Love is, as everyone knows, a mysterious and all-controlling force, with vast power over our thoughts and life decisions. But is there something a bit worrisome about all this uniformity of opinion? Is this the one subject about which no disagreement will be entertained, about which one truth alone is permissible? Consider that the most powerful organized religions produce the occasional heretic; every ideology has its apostates; even sacred cows find their butchers. Except for love. Hence the necessity for a polemic against it. A polemic is designed to be the prose equivalent of a small explosive device placed under your E-Z-Boy lounger. It won’t injure you (well not severely); it’s just supposed to shake things up and rattle a few convictions.
