Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Descriptive History of the Popular Watering-Place of Southport: In the Parish of North Meols, on the Western Coast of Lancashire It is indeed a fact that several histories of the town of Southport have already appeared, and it is also a fact that those several works have been required. In writing this history it has not been necessary to converse with antiquaries, to visit churches and ruins for the purpose of examining monuments and brasses, or to search into libraries, amongst worm-eaten, dogs'eared folios, for the purpose of ascertaining what part the Southportians took in the Civil Wars, the Reformation, or the claims of the Pretender. Download or read book Southport Cooking written by Wm Zombory and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2021-07-02 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southport is a large seaside town in Merseyside, England. At the 2001 census, it had a population of 90,336, making it the eleventh most populous settlement in North West England. Southport lies on the Irish Sea coast and is fringed to the north by the Ribble estuary. While it's true, when someone asks a good place to uncover the history of an area, people may not automatically jump to cookbooks. Yet, they are a surprisingly good source for building a colorful image of times long gone. And Southport is a place like that. The food is great, delicious meals, fantastic views, and seaside in the port. What about the history of Southport? While the beginning of this book reads a little like a college research paper-and the profiles of women, a dry listing of their circumstances-it does put forward a wealth of information. The author leaves out no detail and gives readers the full picture. The book begins with an introduction and brief history of the city of Southport before moving on to the women of St. Philip's Parish who contributed to the cookbook. Following each woman's story are the recipes. The flow works well, and by the time readers reach the recipes, they have a colorful picture of the women's connection to the food and the people who would enjoy it. Much to discover. If you want to, then buy this book.

Download or read book Southport written by Harry Foster and published by Phillimore. This book was released on 2008 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southport is a 19th-century town which grew up on a thinly populated coast of sandy dunes. It is a region where landscape has played a dominant role and this new account of the area's past places the modern town inside a longer chronological narrative. South Port first developed as a bathing resort before becoming a desirable place to live. It was a product of the 19th century, and it is no surprise that this period has been the most extensively reported of the town's history, but the opportunity is taken here to consider areas and issues that had previously been relatively ignored. The 20th century, during which time Southport became established as a high-class residential town, has attracted less attention from historians. It is an omission addressed in a book which complements existing works but differs substantially from them. The post-1974 account of Southport into Sefton, for example, brings the story up to the present day. As well as placing Southport within a broader historical framework, this new study also deals with all the various parts of the town, including the suburbs of Birkdale and Ainsdale.
