Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Concise History of Ireland From the Earliest Times to 1837 Tms little book, down to 1608, is an abridgment of my larger work, A Short History of Ireland, of which the very words are used here as far as possible. The portion from 1608 to 1887 is new. The whole book is of necessity greatly condensed, containing much matter in little space but it is not a cram book. It is a connected, intelligible narrative, into which I have tried to infuse some life and human interest. The series of short Chapters forming Part I., on the Literature, Art, and Institutions of ancient Ireland, will, I hope, prove useful; and perhaps they may be found interesting. In four of them I have given, in language as simme and clear as I could command, a popular exposition of a subject not easy to deal with - the Brehon Laws, including those relating to land. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Ireland: From the Earliest Times to 1608 In a short Preface I wish to draw attention to some special features of this book. Most readers will perceive that the mode of treating the subject is somewhat new. The chapters forming Part I., on the literature, art, and institutions of ancient Ireland, will, I hope, prove useful; and perhaps they may be found interesting. They do not pretend to be deep or exhaustive; but, while setting them forth in language as simple, clear, and readable as I could command, I have tried to make them comprehensive so far as the limits allowed, and thoroughly accurate. In five short chapters is given a popular exposition of a subject not easy to deal with - the Brehon Laws. The interpretation of these laws is often so difficult, and leaves so much room for differences of opinion, that I have been at unusual pains to give references. The vexed question of land tenure has lately aroused very lively interest, and perhaps the public may be pleased to have an explanation of the main features of the ancient Irish land laws. I have generally followed the plan of weaving the history round important events and leading personages. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Ireland, From the Earliest Times to the Present Day, Vol. 3: 1547 to 1649 The period covered by Volume II was for Ireland a period of storm and struggle and suffering. The strife of race had become intensified and embittered by a strife of religion, for England had definitely cut herself off from Rome, and had even become one of the great champions of Protestantism, while Ireland still clung to the Catholic faith. Religious toleration had then made little progress. Neither France nor Spain was willing to tolerate any religion but Catholicism, and, in consequence, history has to condemn the horrors of the Inquisition, and the banishment of the Huguenots. Nor would England allow her subjects to be anything but Protestants. Even the non-conforming Protestants laboured under disabilities; but the Catholics, above all, were trampled on and oppressed. Their attachment to Rome was held to be inconsistent with being loyal subjects; and for such dis loyalty no punishment was too severe. Without making allow ance for difference of racial temperament, the Englishmen of that time, as previously, thought that what was good for England was also good for Ireland. They regarded Irish customs as rude, the Irish language as a barbarous tongue, and the Irishman's religion - Catholicity - as superstition and idolatry. The people who clung to these deserved little mercy, and often got neither mercy nor justice; they were deemed unworthy of getting the status of English subjects, as they were unworthy to be left in possession of their lands. And hence the Plantation of Ulster, the attempted confiscations of Strafford, the savageries of Crom well, and the horrors of the penal laws. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete History of Ireland, From the Earliest Times, Vol. 1: Being Compiled From a Connected Continuation by Approved Standard Writers; From the Earliest Records, to the End of the Twelfth Century The Brigantes of Spain (so called from Breogan, grandfather to Milesius) became a respectable, warlike, and commercial people, about A. M. 2600; and a part of their posterity conquered Ireland in the year of the world 2736. As to the history of the people, on which this chronology is founded, every evidence and every circumstance that can in reason he expected, seem combined to stamp ao thority on it. From Phaenius to the sons of Milesius, their exploits, their travels, successes, and disappointments, have been narrated from age to age with such an air of native simplicity and candour, that it would be hard to conceive - even sup posing it an imposture - what could be proposed by the deception. The short ness of the voyages; their coasting from land to land; and the length of time they were tossed about, so as to take some years in passing from Phoenicia to Getulia, plainly show that this expedition was un dertaken in the very infancy of navigation.
