Book Synopsis A Contrastive Grammar of English and Dutch / Contrastieve Grammatica Engels / Nederlands by : Flor Aarts
Download or read book A Contrastive Grammar of English and Dutch / Contrastieve Grammatica Engels / Nederlands written by Flor Aarts and published by Springer. This book was released on 1987 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an attempt to contribute to the contrastive study of the syntax of English and Dutch. Although it is not the first contrastive grammar of the two languages to be published in Holland, it is undoubtedly the most comprehen sive. In writing A Contrastive Grammar of English and Dutch (henceforth CGED), we have been fortunate in having at our disposal the two most ex haustive descriptions of English and Dutch published to date: A Comprehen sive Grammar of the English Language (CGEL), by Randolph Quirk, Sidney Greenbaum, Geoffrey Leech and Jan Svartvik, which appeared in 1985, and the Algemene Nederlandse Spraakkunst (ANS), by G. Geerts, W. Haeseryn, J. de Rooij and M. e. van den Toorn, published in 1984. Both grammars are based on a traditional descriptive framework; this also holds true for CGED. CGED consists of two parts. Part One ('A Concise English Grammar') pro vides an overview of the main points of English syntax. It introduces students to the concepts and terminology they require in order to be able to compare the syntactic structures of English and Dutch. Part One consists of two chap ters. In Chapter 1 the questions 'What is grammar?' and 'What is contrastive grammar?' are dealt with briefly.

This book was released on 2020-01-23 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using different theoretical approaches and frameworks, this book addresses a broad range of themes in contrastive linguistics, including inflection, derivation and compounding, tense, wh-questions, post-verbal subjects, focus and clitics, among others. Comparing English, German, Greek, Romance, Slavic and South Pacific languages, the book highlights the significance of the contrastive perspective for language-specific description and general interface issues, casting light on contrasts between languages at the levels of morphology and syntax. In this respect, it makes a valuable contribution to our understanding of language typology and language universals.

Book Synopsis Policies, Principles, Practices by : Rita Cancino
Download or read book Policies, Principles, Practices written by Rita Cancino and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-05-25 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the various challenges facing university foreign language teaching in non-anglophone countries in the era of educational globalization. Growing student mobility, net-based cross-border university education, and universities opening subsidiaries in other countries force university teachers to offer their teaching in English rather than in their mother tongue, and universities to equip their staff members with the necessary foreign language competencies. As a reflection of societal and institutional globalization processes, dedicated language teachers strive to adjust teaching methods to new student identities, the availability of advanced learning technologies, and social media enabling multiple forms of cross-border contact. Thus, understanding the situation of contemporary university language teaching requires a consideration of macro-level social changes, institutional policies, as well as developments in classroom practice. The point of departure is the case of Denmark. The problems addressed and the remedies offered, however, apply to all non-anglophone universities with the ambition to stay competitive in the global market of university education. The book includes contributions from foreign and second language teaching specialists representing a broad spectrum of Danish universities and years of sustained scholarly effort to improve the standard of university language teaching and the political recognition of the importance of advanced foreign language skills.
