Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computers have taken a permanent place in almost every human endeavor in the last 20 years. This infiltration requires a learning process on the part of the people utilising them and realising where and how they can be best used beyond the basic and obvious applications. Statistics is an example of their application in many diverse fields to reach conclusions and make projections never before possible. Beyond this, applied statistics is rapidly becoming not only an instrument, but an integral part of the advance of knowledge. There are many fields such as medicine, biology, weather prediction, military planning, and many others where the statistical studies are essential before the next step can be taken. This book presents recent research in the field from around the globe.

Book excerpt: Mixed Poisson processes are a well known class of point processes derived from (stationary) Poisson processes. In particular they cover cases where the intensity of a Poisson process is unknown but can be assumed to follow a known probability distribution. This situation is common e. g. in insurance mathematics where for instance the number of accident claims in which an individual is involved and which is evolving over some time can in principal be well described by a Poisson process with an individual, yet normally unknown intensity corresponding to the individual's accident proneness. Modelling this intensity as a random variable naturally leads to a mixed model. Usually, an insurance company will have a good estimate of the associated mixing distribution due to its large portfolio of policies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This updated classic text will aid readers in understanding much of the current literature on order statistics: a flourishing field of study that is essential for any practising statistician and a vital part of the training for students in statistics. Written in a simple style that requires no advanced mathematical or statistical background, the book introduces the general theory of order statistics and their applications. The book covers topics such as distribution theory for order statistics from continuous and discrete populations, moment relations, bounds and approximations, order statistics in statistical inference and characterisation results, and basic asymptotic theory. There is also a short introduction to record values and related statistics. The authors have updated the text with suggestions for further reading that may be used for self-study. Written for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in statistics and mathematics, practising statisticians, engineers, climatologists, economists, and biologists.

Book excerpt: Order statistics and record values appear in many statistical applications and are widely used in statistical modeling and inference. Both models describe random variables arranged in order of magnitude. In addition to these well-known models, several other models of ordered random variables, known and new ones, are introduced in this book such as order statistics with non-integral sample size, sequential order statistics, k-th record values, Pfeifer' s record model, k -records from non-identical distributions and ordered random variables which arise from n truncation of distributions. These models can be effectively applied, e.g., in reliability theory. Here, an order statistic represents the life-length of some r-out-of-n-system which is an important technical structure consisting of n components. For this application, a new and more adequate model is naturally suggested. Sequential order statistics serve as a model describing certain dependencies or interactions among the system components caused by failures of components. Record values are closely connected with the occurrence times of some corresponding non-homogeneaus Poisson process and used in so lled shock models. More flexible record models, and therefore more applicable to practical situations, are considered here. The main purpose of this book is to present a concept of generalized order statistics as a unified approach to a variety of models of ordered random variables. In the distribution theoretical sense, all of the models mentioned above are contained in the proposed model of generalized order statistics.

Business and sport analysts deal with records which play important roles in various fields of statistics and its application. This book enables a reader to check his/her level of understanding of the theory of record values. We give basic formulae which are more important in the theory and present a lot of examples which illustrate the theoretical statements. For a beginner in record statistics, as well as for graduate students the study of our book needs the basic knowledge of the subject. A more advanced reader can use our book to polish his/her knowledge. An upgraded list of bibliography which will help a reader to enrich his/her theoretical knowledge and widen the experience of dealing with ordered observations, is also given in the book.

Book excerpt: Exponential distribution is one of the most-used distributions in the theory and practice of statistics. It has several important properties like being memoryless and having a constant hazard rate. The field of characterization is developed in different branches of statistics and applied probability. Ordered random variables are common in various applications in practice. In this book, characterizations of exponential distribution using ordered random variables are presented. Most of the known results as well as many new results are given in this book. The aim of the book is to present various characterizations of exponential distribution based on ordered random variables. The book is written on a lower technical level and requires basic knowledge of mathematics and statistics. Chapter 1 gives some basic properties of exponential distribution. Chapters 2, 3, and 4 give the characterization of exponential distribution based on order statistics, record values, and generalized order statistics.

Over the last few decades, many articles on various topics of ordered statistical data have appeared. Our handbook comprises twenty one chapters discussing various topics on theory and applications. The editors of this book worked together several articles on order and record statistics, which covered the subjects of distributional properties, characterisations and statistical inferences. It was a special interest to co-ordinate and edit an interesting research problem based on material contributed by several prominent researchers from all over the world. This book presents new developments in the subject of ordered random variables. These aspects involve theory of ordered random variables, reliability theory, stochastic ordering, bounds, characterisations, and estimation and prediction techniques.
