Book excerpt: This book covers all topics related to anesthetic and perioperative management, critical care and pain in cancer patients. The chapters of the book describe the principles and practices of onco-anesthesia, onco-critical care and cancer pain in great details. Cancer surgeries (onco-surgeries) are organ specific now with each surgery having its own set of anesthetic requirements and challenges. The perioperative management of these different organ-specific surgeries have been discussed based on recent evidence. The chapters have been written by experts from different cancer centers of India. Various courses like DM Onco-anesthesia and fellowship in onco-anesthesia are running in different institutes. FNB in Onco-anesthesia has been recognised this year. This book will help all those students pursuing these courses both as textbook and as reference book. This book will also be very helpful for MD/DNB students for their examination purpose as a good number of topics in their syllabus are on perioperative management of cancer patients. Moreover, anesthesiologists, who are practicing anesthesia in cancer patients, will also be benefited from this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers all essential evidence on perioperative care and anesthetic concerns for cancer surgeries, including the evaluation and assessment of patients’ schedule for cancer surgeries, perioperative anesthetic management of various cancers, perioperative analgesia for cancer surgeries, and issues related to inoperable cancers. It reviews anesthetic considerations of all cancer types as there is a wide variation in anesthetic requirements in this subset of patients. Cancer surgeries are on the rise worldwide and healthcare facilities with cancer as a core specialty are emerging quickly around the globe. As cancer is on rise and efficient surgical management is available, more and more patients are being treated surgically. However, cancer surgeries are complicated, have varied concerns and these are not covered sufficiently in presently available textbooks of anesthesiology. This book fulfills the growing need for complete and comprehensive textbook of onco-anesthesia and fills the gap in the current texts that do not exclusively cover anesthesia for cancer surgeries. This textbook serves as a comprehensive but quick guide for trainee residents/fellows and practicing anesthesiologists, clinicians and surgeons.

It helps the readers to develop critical thinking and encourage discussion towards improving the overall care of the patients and their families as their optimal management requires expertise in oncology, critical care, and palliative medicine and there is a dearth of books explaining about the special requirements and critical care needs of cancer patients. Each chapter is prepared by an expert in the field and contains well-prepared illustrations, flowcharts and relevant images. Chapters include latest evidence-based information which is useful for the readers. The book is useful for residents, fellows and trainees in the field of onco-anaesthesia, onco-critical care, onco-surgery, critical care and anaesthesia; practitioners and consultants in anaesthesia and onco-anaesthesia as well as intensivist, critical care experts and postgraduates in nursing.

The overall cancer incidence has increased by 25% since 1975. Anaesthetic involvement in hospital interactions has been estimated at around 75%, and so anaesthetists are likely to have major input into the care of the cancer patient. This input may start with the preoperative assessment, but often extends to the intensive care unit and the management of both acute and chronic disease, or procedural related pain. This book is comprised of five main sections dealing with cancer, anaesthesia for cancer surgery, intensive care, pain management and supportive and palliative care. The chapters are authored by acknowledged specialists in their field of cancer patient management. The anaesthesia section discusses not just major surgery but includes the specific and subtle differences that exist in the diverse types of specialist cancer surgery. The pain section deals with the current status of several specific cancer pain problems with contemporary evidence and recent developments in management. This book also introduces novel ways of looking at conventional treatments such as the genetic aspects of opioid use. For a complete understanding of the cancer patient, other aspects of care are also considered, including psychological care and complementary medicines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text provides a comprehensive review and expertise on various interventional cancer pain procedures. The first part of the text addresses the lack of consistency seen in the literature regarding interventional treatment options for specific cancer pain syndromes. Initially, it discusses primary cancer and treatment-related cancer pain syndromes that physicians may encounter when managing cancer patients. The implementation of paradigms that can be used in treating specific groups of cancer such as breast cancer, follows. The remainder of the text delves into a more common approach to addressing interventional cancer pain medicine. After discussing interventional options that are commonly employed by physicians, the text investigates how surgeons may address some of the more severe pain syndromes, and covers the most important interventional available for our patients, intrathecal drug delivery. Chapters also cover radiologic options in targeted neurolysis and ablative techniques, specifically for bone metastasis, rehabilitation to address patients’ quality of life and function, and integrative and psychological therapies. Essentials of Interventional Cancer Pain Management globally assesses and addresses patients’ needs throughout the cancer journey. Written by experts in the field, and packed with copious tables, figures, and flow charts, this book is a must-have for pain physicians, residents, and fellows.

Book excerpt: In an era of promising advances in cancer research, there are considerable and even alarming gaps in the fundamental knowledge and understanding of ovarian cancer. Researchers now know that ovarian cancer is not a single disease-several distinct subtypes exist with different origins, risk factors, genetic mutations, biological behaviors, and prognoses. However, persistent questions have impeded progress toward improving the prevention, early detection, treatment, and management of ovarian cancers. Failure to significantly improve morbidity and mortality during the past several decades is likely due to several factors, including the lack of research being performed by specific disease subtype, lack of definitive knowledge of the cell of origin and disease progression, and incomplete understanding of genetic and non-genetic risk factors. Ovarian Cancers examines the state of the science in ovarian cancer research, identifies key gaps in the evidence base and the challenges to addressing those gaps, considers opportunities for advancing ovarian cancer research, and examines avenues for translation and dissemination of new findings and communication of new information to patients and others. This study makes recommendations for public- and private-sector efforts that could facilitate progress in reducing the incidence of morbidity and mortality from ovarian cancers.
