Basic research suggests that stimulus blocking may occur during transfer of stimulus control. Stimulus blocking may impede the acquisition of new verbal operants by blocking a new stimulus from acquiring stimulus control. An alternative strategy is to teach verbal operants under multiple sources of control and then fade out additional sources of control. Teaching with multiple sources of control could prevent the occurrence of stimulus blocking. This study assessed the efficiency of teaching mand, tact, and echoic operants using transfer of stimulus control via Simultaneous Presentation and using multiple control. Five children with developmental disabilities participated. The results suggest that three participants acquired the target operants with fewer teaching trials using multiple control and two participants acquired the target operants with fewer teaching trials using transfer of stimulus control. These data provide preliminary support for the occurrence of stimulus blocking during transfer of stimulus control across verbal operants and may suggest benefits to using multiple control to establish verbal repertoires.

Book excerpt: Language and our ability to communicate is unique, vital to our existence, and not acquired by all in the same manner. A quantitative study was conducted to compare two tact to intraverbal transfer of stimulus control procedures and their effect on establishing generalized intraverbal responses for two school-aged children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Through the use of a single-subject alternating treatment design, this study compared a tact to intraverbal transfer of stimulus control procedure using a single picture stimulus field presentation versus a tact to intraverbal transfer of stimulus control procedure using a multiple picture stimuli field presentation. The present research was conducted to investigate further the functioning role of problem-solving when teaching multiply controlled intraverbal behavior related to identifying items by their parts. Participant errors, correct responses, and generalized responses were analyzed across Pretest, intervention, and Posttest for both interventions. The findings revealed a correlation with increased generalized responding when using a multiple picture field size presentation as a tact prompt in a tact to intraverbal transfer of stimulus control procedure in comparison to a single picture field size presentation for Participant 1. Participant 2 did not replicate the same results. These data suggest an increased field size presentation as a tact prompt may help facilitate the production of generalized responses in some individuals with autism spectrum disorder.

Book excerpt: Current rates of autism diagnoses have been cause for concern and research as well as rumor and misinformation. Important questions surround the condition: how early can an accurate diagnosis be made? At what age should intervention start? How can parents recognize warning signs? And what causes autism in the first place? There are no easy answers, but the Handbook of Early Intervention for Autism Spectrum Disorders gives researchers, practitioners, and academics the science and guidance to better understand and intervene. Background chapters survey the history of professional understanding of the disorders and the ongoing debate over autism as a single entity or a continuum. Chapters on best methods in screening, assessment, and diagnosis reflect the transition between the DSM-V and older diagnostic criteria. And at the heart of the book, the intervention section ranges from evidence-based strategies for developing core skills to ethical concerns, cultural considerations, and controversial treatments. Included in the Handbook's broad-based coverage: Designing curriculum programs for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Mainstream education for children with ASD. Teaching independent living skills to children with ASD. Social skills and play. Behavioral and mental health disorders in children with ASD. Training and supporting caregivers in evidence-based practices. Teaching cognitive skills to children with ASD. The Handbook of Early Intervention for Autism Spectrum Disorders is a comprehensive reference for researchers, professors, and graduate students as well as clinicians and other scientist-practitioners in clinical child and school psychology, child and adolescent psychiatry, social work, rehabilitation, special education, and pediatric medicine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Verbal Behavior (VB) approach is a form of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), that is based on B.F. Skinner's analysis of verbal behavior and works particularly well with children with minimal or no speech abilities. In this book Dr. Mary Lynch Barbera draws on her own experiences as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and also as a parent of a child with autism to explain VB and how to use it. This step-by-step guide provides an abundance of information about how to help children develop better language and speaking skills, and also explains how to teach non-vocal children to use sign language. An entire chapter focuses on ways to reduce problem behavior, and there is also useful information on teaching toileting and other important self-help skills, that would benefit any child. This book will enable parents and professionals unfamiliar with the principles of ABA and VB to get started immediately using the Verbal Behavior approach to teach children with autism and related disorders.

Book excerpt: Copublished with Context Press Derived Relational Responding offers a series of revolutionary intervention programs for applied work in human language and cognition targeted at students with autism and other developmental disabilities. It presents a program drawn from derived stimulus relations that you can use to help students of all ages acquire foundational and advanced verbal, social, and cognitive skills. The first part of Derived Relational Responding provides step-by-step instructions for helping students learn relationally, acquire rudimentary verbal operants, and develop other basic language skills. In the second section of this book, you'll find ways to enhance students' receptive and expressive repertoires by developing their ability to read, spell, construct sentences, and use grammar. Finally, you'll find out how to teach students to apply the skills they've learned to higher order cognitive and social functions, including perspective-taking, empathy, mathematical reasoning, intelligence, and creativity. This applied behavior analytic training approach will help students make many substantial and lasting gains in language and cognition not possible with traditional interventions.
