Book excerpt: Interest has been shown in the performance of parachutes towed in water, particularly as a means of stress investigation and strength testing which could be applied to a full size parachute towed behind boats in open water. In order to investigate the performance of parachutes in water under controlled conditions, a comparison was made of the same small parachutes, 2 feet in diameter, towed in the No. 1 Model Ship Tank National Physical Laboratory and flown in the No. 2, 11.5 foot wind tunnel, Royal Aircraft Establishment. These tests are described in this note. It is found that the drag area of the same parachute towed in water is higher than when tested in the wind tunnel at the same order of dynamic perssures. One contribution is that the canopy fabric is more porous to air than water. The opening shock factors were larger in the wind tunnel than in the ship tank, and this is thought to be because of the greater rate of loading in air by the associated air mass.

Book excerpt: The present state-of-the-art, technology, and theory applicable to deployable aerodynamic decelerators, especially textile parachute canopies, are presented. Major types of decelerators are described, and their aerodynamic and operational characteristics, as well as applications, are discussed. Detailed coverage is given to decelerator materials, design and construction, hardware, test methods and vehicles, and test instrumentation. Decelerator design procedures and performance prediction techniques are demonstrated by sample calculations.

Book excerpt: This report is a collection of information about the force-producing capabilities and characteristics of some hydrodynamic devices that could possibly be used for the control of submarine or surface ships. Emphasis is on the variety of concepts available for this purpose, something about the physical nature of how each device operates, and descriptions of the forces attainable. Out of all the devices considered, a preliminary judgment is formed of those devices that seem most likely to be of use in the immediate future. (Author).

Book excerpt: Small textile ribbon parachute models were shown to exhibit steady-state aerodynamic coefficients similar to those of rigid parachute models. Since no detalied study of the effects of model flexibility on the steady-state aerodynamic performance of a parachute model has been reported, several ribbon parachute models of varying flexibility and equal geometric porosity were constructed and tested in the wind tunnel. No correlation was found between model flexibility and measured aerodynamic performance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wind tunnel and drop tests were made on model parachutes of various types, to study the influence o[n] performance of such factors as design, shape, size, load, porosity, and line length. All the unstable parachutes which were tested, such as solid flat, solid conical, and solid spherical types, have a pronounced increase in the drag coefficient C[subscript]D with decreasing rate of descent in the range of 35 to 8[0 fps]. The stable prarachutes, including the high porosity, pseudo-ribbon, guided surface, and ribbon, have a practically constant C[subscript]D. Square and triangular parachutes have higher drag than round parachutes o[f the] same area. Thirty-degree-conical and quarter-spherical parachutes have higher drag than flat and hemispherical parachutes. The Airfoil parachute has higher drag than the standard flat parachute an[d] is fairly stable. The length of the suspension lines influences the drag.

Book excerpt: This document serves as the third revision of the USAF Parachute Handbook which was first published in 1951. The data and information represent the current state of the art relative to recovery system design and development. The initial chapters describe representative recovery applications, components, subsystems, material, manufacture and testing. The final chapters provide empirical data and analytical methods useful for predicting performance and presenting a definitive design of selected components into a reliable recovery system.

Book excerpt: Tests were conducted in the Propulsion Wind Tunnel to determine deployment and inflation characteristics which would allow comparative performance evaluations to be made of four conical ribbon parachute versions constructed of either nylon and/or Kevlar-29 materials. In general, parachutes constructed of Kevlar-29 material withstood the same opening shock loads while exhibiting a shorter damping time for inflation drag loads compared with nylon-constructed chutes. The least postinflation drag dynamics were exhibited by those parachutes which contained Kevlar-29 materials. A significant savings in weight and volume was realized by using Kevlar-29 as a substitute for nylon in parachute construction.
