Book excerpt: Each year millions of young people graduate from high school and enroll in colleges and universities across the country, and many of these students are underprepared for the demands and academic rigor of college-level courses. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there were significant differences in graduation rates between students who entered college academically underprepared and those who entered academically prepared to enroll in college-level courses. The subjects of the study were a selected group of students enrolled at a public, 2-year comprehensive community college located in Northeast Tennessee. The criteria used for selecting the subjects included: (1) Individuals who graduated from high school in the months of December through July in each of the years 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006 and enrolled as first-time, full-time students during the fall semester immediately following high school graduation; (2) individuals who were classified as full-time students at the community college because they enrolled for a course load of 12 or more semester credit hours; and (3) individuals who had completed the ACT assessment test and were placed in developmental-level courses or college-level courses based on ACT subscores. Students scoring lower than 19 on the ACT in the areas of English, reading, and mathematics were required to take developmental-level courses, whereas students scoring 19 or above were placed in college-level courses. The subjects of the study were tracked for a 3-year period to determine the relationship between the number of developmental courses into which a student was placed and the 3-year graduation rate. This study also examined the relationship between the number of academic subject content areas in which a student was required to take developmental courses and the 3-year graduation rate. Book excerpt: This study compared the five-year baccalaureate degree graduation rates--as measured by overall degree attainment rates and time-to-degree rates--of three fall 1995 junior-status cohorts at Idaho State University (ISU). These cohorts were transfer juniors from the College of Southern Idaho, transfer juniors from Ricks College, and native ISU juniors. Subgroups within the two transfer junior cohorts and subgroups among all three cohorts were formed for additional baccalaureate graduation rate comparisons. Transfer junior subgroups consisted of associate degree earned or not earned prior to transferring to ISU and receiving or not receiving core certification upon entering ISU. The subgroups among the three cohorts were classified based on the number of academic credits taken and part-time or full-time status in the fall of 1995. This study utilized a descriptive research design methodology to analyze baccalaureate graduation patterns from the fall of 1995 to the final summer term in 2000. The results of this study showed that the three junior cohorts had near identical five-year baccalaureate attainment rates and time-to-degree rates. ISU native students, however, graduated faster in the second year than the two transfer cohorts. Similar graduation rates were found within and among the transfer junior subgroups with some variation. Earning an associate degree prior to transferring to ISU resulted in receiving a baccalaureate degree faster than for those who had not earned an associate degree. Likewise, junior transfer students who were core certified graduated faster than those who were not core certified. Other graduation variations were found on this measure between and within the transfer cohorts. The greatest variations in baccalaureate graduation rates within and among the three cohorts were found in the subgroups of fall 1995 number of credits taken and part-time versus full-time status. As the number of credits taken increased so did the graduation attainment rates and time-to-degree rates among all three cohorts and transfer student subgroups. The part-time subgroups among the three cohorts had an average five-year graduation rate of 54%, while full-time subgroups had an average graduation rate of 82%.

The study focuses on the 2011, 2012, and 2013 school years in the Midwestern part of the United States. The graduation rates of male and female students over the 2011, 2012, and 2013 school years were analyzed to determine if there is a difference in the graduation rate among the genders as well as the overall graduation rates among the school districts. The study was conducted by randomly selecting 54 school districts in the Midwestern United States. Each of the 54 school districts was split into three categories. The three categories included female graduation rates, male graduation rates, and overall graduation rates of the 2011, 2012, and 2013 school years. The results of the study were determined through a series of t-tests over the three categories of data. Through data tables and graphs the results show that females had a higher graduation rate over each of the three school years and overall.

Book excerpt: The National Governors' Association is urging states to develop a standardized cohort graduation rate definition and to develop data systems with quality data that can in turn be used to produce a reliable indicator. This paper is an examination of one state's graduation rate using the cohort method. The statistics generated are compared to a panel based graduation rate, the Average Freshmen Graduation Rate (AFGR) produced by the National Center for Education Statistics and the Cumulative Promotion Index (CPI) published in Education Week. The cohort, panel and AFGR methods generated similar results across all years while the CPI produced a lower rate for two of four years examined. The CPI appears to be more susceptible to population fluctuations than those that use four years of data. (Contains 4 tables and 2 figures.).
