To better understand the causes and identify strategies to manage first-term attrition, the United States Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences (ARI) initiated the "First Term Soldier Attrition and Management Research Project." Under this effort, numerous surveys were administered to a substantial proportion of the FY99 enlistment cohort, and longitudinal models explaining attrition were developed. Given changes in the recruiting environment since 1999, questions arose about the relevance of results from the FY99 cohort for application with current cohorts. The current study represents a limited replication of the First Term Project using FY03 accessions. The results presented in this report suggest that the FY03 and FY99 cohorts are quite similar. Though some differences were found, they did little to diminish the predictive validity and utility of variables and models identified as salient predictors of BCT attrition in the FY99 longitudinal study. In light of these findings, recommendations made based on the FY99 cohort's longitudinal study with regard to how the Army can use these results to manage BCT attrition still hold.

Book excerpt: "This report summarizes attrition-related findings for Soldiers who participated in three Select21 reception battalion data collections: the pilot test (September-November 2003), faking research (January-February 2004), and field test (August-September 2004). The report provides estimates of the criterion-related validity of early for pre-concurrent validation versions of the Select21 predictor measures for predicting first-term attrition. As such, the results provided in this report speak to the potential of the measures for selecting future Soldiers who are likely to complete their service obligations"--P. i.

Book excerpt: The U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences is engaged in abroad-based attrition research program incorporating both longitudinal and concurrent research designs. In the longitudinal design, several measures (e.g., surveys, test instruments, and performance criteria) will be obtained from samples of the Fiscal Year 1999 accession cohort who will be tracked throughout the first- term life cycle. For the concurrent design, comparison data from various points along the first-term life cycle will be collected from earlier accession cohorts. This report outlines the overall sampling, data collection, and data analysis plans for the program.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The work described in this report is an extension of the STAY project, with a directed focus on officer career continuance. An Officer Transition Survey (OTS) was developed to identify and examine the factors that influence junior officers to continue serving beyond their ADSO or separate from the Active Army. Career continuance factors and separation motives were identified and documented for 169 Active Army junior officers (O1-O3) who were actively out-processing at Army Transition Centers. Data were also collected from proxy samples that were comprised of 485 junior officers who were in the process of deciding whether to serve beyond their service obligation (officer proxy sample) and 68 experts who work closely with junior officers (expert proxy sample). Results indicated the OTS provides valid, empirical information regarding junior officers' career continuance influences and separation motives. Results also show that officer and expert proxy samples can be used to understand and quantify the motives of officers who are separating from the Active Army. These findings have important implications for collecting valid information using a more efficient, streamlined application of survey methodology that expends fewer resources."--P. i.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although access to higher education is virtually universally available, college student retention stills remains a vexing and puzzling problem for educators and legislators. In College Student Retention: Formula for Student Success, second edition, Alan Seidman deals with this problematic issue by examining a number of areas critical to the retention of students, including the history, the theories and concepts, models, and a standardized definition of the term. Seidman and his contributors also lay out the financial implications and trends of retention in one of their updated chapters. Completely new to this edition are three chapters that examine several recent issues: the current theories of retention, retention of online students, and retention in community colleges. Tying all of these components together, Seidman then presents his formula and highly successful model for student success that colleges can implement to effect change in retaining students and helping them to complete their academic and personal goals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Latina/o population constitutes the largest racial and ethnic minority group in the U.S. and is disproportionately under-represented in college and in graduate programs. This is the first book specifically to engage with the absence of Latinas/os in doctoral studies. It proposes educational and administrative strategies to open up the pipeline, and institutional practices to ensure access, support, models and training for Latinas/os aspiring to the Ph.D. The under-education of Latina/o youth begins early. Given that by twelfth grade half will stop out or be pushed out of high school, and only seven percent will complete a college degree, it is not surprising so few enter graduate studies. When Latina/o students do enter higher education, few attend those colleges or universities that are gateways to graduate degrees. Regardless of the type of higher education institution they attend, Latinas/os often encounter social and academic isolation, unaffordable costs, and lack of support. This historic under-representation has created a vicious cycle of limited social and economic mobility. There is a paucity of the Latina/o faculty and leaders whom research shows are essential for changing campus climate and influencing institutions to adapt to the needs of a changing student body. As a result, Latina/o graduate students often have few role models, advocates or mentors, and limited support for their research agendas.By reviewing the pipeline from kindergarten through university, this book provides the needed data and insights to effect change for policy makers, administrators, faculty, and staff; and material for reflection for aspiring Latina/o Ph.D.s on the paths they have taken and the road ahead. The book then addresses the unique experiences and challenges faced by Latina/os in doctoral programs, and offers guidance for students and those responsible for them. Chapters cover issues of gender and generational differences, the role of culture in the graduate school, mentorship, pursuing research, and professional development opportunities for Latina/os.The book closes with the voices of by Latina/o students who are currently pursuing or recently completed their doctoral degree. These narratives describe their cultural and educational journeys, providing insight into their personal and professional experiences. These stories bring alive the graduate experience for anyone interested in successful recruitment, retention, and graduation of Latina/o doctoral students – an inspiration and guidance to those aspiring to the doctorate.
