Book excerpt: Grazing experiments were conducted in summer, autumn and winter to assess the effects of stock density, grazing duration, pre-grazing pasture mass and stock type on forage intake by sheep grazing at high stock densities for short durations. In summer and winter, sheep were stocked at 200 sheep/ha on 0.1 ha plots for 9 and 4 days, respectively. Total dry matter (TDM) and green dry matter (GDM) were estimated each day by clipping 0.2 m2 plots to ground level. In autumn, ewes and lambs separately grazed 0.333 ha pastures at stock densities of 270, 540 or 810 sheep/ha for 1, 2, or 3 days. Pre- and post-grazing TDM were estimated with a single probe capacitance meter. The percent GDM of TDM was estimated using a spectophotometer. In each study TDM and GDM pasture mass were analyzed using a non-linear (negative exponential) multi-variate regression model. Intake was estimated from results of pasture mass analysis. Book excerpt: A study investigating the effect of sheep stocking density and grazing duration on forage intake, grazing efficiency, dietary selectivity and subsequent forage accumulation in tall fescue(Festuca arundinacea)- subclover(Trifolium subtaranium) pastures was conducted near Corvallis, Oregon during early and late spring in 1988 and 1989. Grazing treatments were 2, 6, and 10-day duration and corresponding stocking densities 380, 130, 78 and 1390, 460 and 280 ewes/ha during early and late trials each year, respectively. Average daily intake and grazing efficiency were highest (P0.05) in the 10-day duration and lowest in the 2-day duration. During the first 2 days of all duration treatments, average daily intake decreased as stocking density increased (P0.05). Manure cover and crowding stress may explain lower average daily intake under the shorter duration/high density treatments. However, stocking density had little effect on grazing efficiency. This was largely due to the high amount of forage destroyed under the low density treatments which offset the effect of higher forage intake of that treatment. This bulletin examines forage productivity after one or more years of fall clipping or grazing. Spring yields following fall clipping or grazing were measured on three separate trials. In the first trial, research plots, stockpiled under two different management systems, were clipped for three consecutive years. In the second trial, lambs grazed paddocks of pasture mixes, stockpiled under two different management systems, from October until November in each of three years. In the last, beef cows were strip-grazed across mixed pastures from October to mid-December in 1997.
