Book excerpt: Sixty freshman high school boys from Medford, Wisconsin, were divided into three groups by random selection. A pre-test for trunk-hip flexibility was administered to each group. A flexibility development program of four weeks duration (four times a week) was conducted, and then six post tests were taken at one week intervals. For the flexibility development program one group performed static stretching exercises, and the control group did not participate in the flexibility development program.

Strength and Conditioning for Sports Performance is a comprehensive and authoritative introduction to the theory and practice of strength and conditioning, providing students, coaches and athletes with everything they need to design and implement effective training programs. Revised and updated for a second edition, the book continues to include clear and rigorous explanations of the core science underpinning strength and conditioning techniques and give detailed, step-by-step guides to all key training methodologies, including training for strength, speed, endurance, flexibility and plyometrics. The second edition expands on the opening coaching section as well as introducing an entirely new section on current training methods which includes examining skill acquisition and motor learning. Throughout the book the focus is on the coaching process, with every chapter highlighting the application of strength and conditioning techniques in everyday coaching situations. Strength and Conditioning for Sports Performance includes a unique and extensive section of sport-specific chapters, each of which examines in detail the application of strength and conditioning to a particular sport, from soccer and basketball to golf and track and field athletics. The second edition sees this section expanded to include other sports such as rugby union, rugby league and American football. The book includes contributions from world-leading strength and conditioning specialists, including coaches who have worked with Olympic gold medallists and international sports teams at the highest level. Strength and Conditioning for Sports Performance is an essential course text for any degree-level student with an interest in strength and conditioning, for all students looking to achieve professional accreditation, and an invaluable reference for all practising strength and conditioning coaches.

Book excerpt: Stretching routines are routinely integrated into the rehabilitation programs of injuries requiring immobilization. Static stretching has been promoted as the safest, most effective, and most comfortable method of stretching whereas the diametric opposite ballistic technique has been essentially shunned by the rehabilitation community due to its' correlated risk of injury and patient discomfort. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the kinematics and levels of perceived soreness associated with static and ballistic hamstring stretching to compare for any differences in benefits or drawbacks between the techniques. While both STA and BAL methods of stretching did create gains in forward movement similarly, STA stretching was found to cause significantly more discomfort than BAL stretching, and thus contraindications towards ballistic stretching may be unjustified. Future research should examine these variables controlling for additional and accessory motions as well as examining the kinematics of the actual BAL and STA stretching maneuvers.

Book excerpt: Stretching routines are typically integrated into exercise programs to improve flexibility and performance. Static stretching has been promoted as the safest and best method of stretching whereas the very different ballistic method of stretching has been virtually abandoned due to its associated risk of injury. The purpose of the current investigation was to examine the biomechanics and muscle activity associated with static and ballistic stretching of the hamstring muscles in order to compare the assets and liabilities of each technique. In a randomized cross-over design, 16 men and 13 women (22.5 ± 4.5 yrs) participated in both static (STA) and ballistic (BAL) conditions. Each condition required the subject to perform a pre-maximum stretch, a series of three 30-second static or ballistic stretches, and a post-maximum stretch. Electromyography (EMG) of the gluteus maximus, hamstrings, gastrocnemius, and rectus femoris muscles as well as joint kinematics were measured during all procedures. Data regarding maximum stretch distance and hip angle were recorded. Measurements of perceived soreness were made before and after the stretching exercise as well as at 24, 48 and 72 hours after stretching. A two-way repeated measures ANOVA was used for statistical analysis of perceived soreness, maximum stretched distance, and hip angle and t-tests were used for analysis of muscle activity. Significance was determined at the p

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stretching is a fundamentally important part of sport and exercise, playing a role in improving performance, and preventing injury and rehabilitation, but its scientific underpinnings have, to this point, been overlooked in book publishing. The Science and Physiology of Flexibility and Stretching is the most up-to-date and comprehensive book to cover the underlying physiology and psychology of stretching, critically assessing why, when, and how we should stretch, as well as offering a highly illustrated, practical guide to stretching exercises. Placing stretching in the context of both health and performance, the first section of the book sets out the science behind stretching, critically assessing the benefits, disadvantages, and roles of different types of stretching, exploring the mechanisms behind increasing range-of-movement through stretching and other methods, and offering evidence-based guidance on building stretching into warm-ups. In its second section, the book provides a step-by-step guide to static, dynamic, and PRF stretching exercises for beginners, through recreational athletes, to elite performers. Richly illustrated, and including an online resource, The Science and Physiology of Flexibility and Stretching provides an important scientific enquiry into stretching, and an invaluable reference for any strength and conditioning coach or student, personal trainer, sports coach, or exercise scientist.

Book excerpt: The increase in tissue extensibility and joint range of motion through stretching has often been demonstrated. However, the existence of an optimal stretch duration has not been proven and the identification of an ideal number of repetitions of a stretch has received little attention in the literature. The purpose of this study was to examine and clarify the relationship of duration and number of repetitions of a stretch and their effect on changes in hamstring extensibility (HE) resulting from a stretching program. The HE of 33 subjects who were randomly assigned to a control group or one of three treatment groups was assessed before and after a three-week stretching program. The subjects in the three treatment groups stretched once a day, five times a week, and either once for 15 seconds (1 X 15), twice for 15 seconds (2 X 15), or once for 30 seconds (1 X 30). A repeated measures ANOVA showed no statistically significant effect for treatment group (P=0.181) or for treatment by pre- and post-treatment measurements (P=0.140), but indicated a significant difference between pre- and post-treatment measurements (P
