Book excerpt: Children are already learning at birth, and they develop and learn at a rapid pace in their early years. This provides a critical foundation for lifelong progress, and the adults who provide for the care and the education of young children bear a great responsibility for their health, development, and learning. Despite the fact that they share the same objective - to nurture young children and secure their future success - the various practitioners who contribute to the care and the education of children from birth through age 8 are not acknowledged as a workforce unified by the common knowledge and competencies needed to do their jobs well. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 explores the science of child development, particularly looking at implications for the professionals who work with children. This report examines the current capacities and practices of the workforce, the settings in which they work, the policies and infrastructure that set qualifications and provide professional learning, and the government agencies and other funders who support and oversee these systems. This book then makes recommendations to improve the quality of professional practice and the practice environment for care and education professionals. These detailed recommendations create a blueprint for action that builds on a unifying foundation of child development and early learning, shared knowledge and competencies for care and education professionals, and principles for effective professional learning. Young children thrive and learn best when they have secure, positive relationships with adults who are knowledgeable about how to support their development and learning and are responsive to their individual progress. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 offers guidance on system changes to improve the quality of professional practice, specific actions to improve professional learning systems and workforce development, and research to continue to build the knowledge base in ways that will directly advance and inform future actions. The recommendations of this book provide an opportunity to improve the quality of the care and the education that children receive, and ultimately improve outcomes for children.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between perceived physical competence and actual motor skill performance. Thirty male and female young children with a mean age of 68.72 months from a private religious school for grades pre-kindergarten to fifth grade participated in this study. The Test of Gross Motor Development-2 and the Modified Pictorial Scale of Perceived Physical Competence were administered to each participant. The results indicate that children tend to have inflated self-perceptions of their motor skills as a whole. Total composite scores indicated that children who had an average to above average motor skill performance were more accurate in their self-perceptions. This study may help educators to identify children who are at risk of having inappropriate or negative motivational guides that may direct future behaviors in physical activity.

Book excerpt: Undertaken at orphanages in Russia, this study tests the role of early social and emotion experience in the development of children. Children were exposed to either multiple caregivers who performed routine duties in a perfunctory manner with minimal interaction or fewer caregivers who were trained to engage in warm, responsive, and developmentally appropriate interactions during routine care. Engaged and responsive caregivers were associated with substantial improvements in child development and these findings provide a rationale for making similar improvements in other institutions, programs, and organizations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Children develop theory of mind in relationship with others based on the concept of self and others' built-in cultural characteristics. The present study examined children's self-concepts based on cultural characteristics in 2 different cultures and their theory of mind development. Specifically, a total of 112 American and Korean children (56 Korean and 56 American), 4 and 5 years of age, were recruited for the study to test the relationship of cultural characteristics (interdependent or independent), as measured by the Children's Self-View Questionnaire, to performance on 3 false belief tasks: unexpected object transfer task, person-internal transfer task, and person-external transfer task. As predicted, there was no significant difference in performance on the object transfer false belief task between children from the 2 cultures, but Korean children outperformed American children on the 2 person-related transfer tasks, suggesting that Korean children have an advantage in understanding person-related tasks. American and Korean children responded differently to the Self-View measure, with American children higher in Social Potency and lower in Traditionalism than Korean children. Regarding the relationship between the self measures and children's understanding of false belief, children's age-related change on social potency predicted their performance on object transfer and person-external tasks, indicating that children may develop their sensitivity to others around the time they acquire theory of mind.

Book excerpt: Today, emotional resilience is one of the most important competencies in the process of young people's transition to adult life and developing a meaningful career. Emotional resilience is also important for maintaining well-being after stressful events throughout life. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many studies have shown the negative impact of perceived stress on people's well-being, careers, and even their employability. At the same time, emotional resilience is important in everyday life as it protects against mental disturbances. Emotional resilience is a competence that can be developed under formal educational programs or trained using a range of training methods and tools. Emotional resilience is a trait people have from birth and develop throughout their lives. It is a trainable capability that can be used to display positive adaptation to stressful situations and cope with life's challenges.
