Book Synopsis Hearing Loss by : National Research Council
Download or read book Hearing Loss written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-12-17 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions of Americans experience some degree of hearing loss. The Social Security Administration (SSA) operates programs that provide cash disability benefits to people with permanent impairments like hearing loss, if they can show that their impairments meet stringent SSA criteria and their earnings are below an SSA threshold. The National Research Council convened an expert committee at the request of the SSA to study the issues related to disability determination for people with hearing loss. This volume is the product of that study. Hearing Loss: Determining Eligibility for Social Security Benefits reviews current knowledge about hearing loss and its measurement and treatment, and provides an evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of the current processes and criteria. It recommends changes to strengthen the disability determination process and ensure its reliability and fairness. The book addresses criteria for selection of pure tone and speech tests, guidelines for test administration, testing of hearing in noise, special issues related to testing children, and the difficulty of predicting work capacity from clinical hearing test results. It should be useful to audiologists, otolaryngologists, disability advocates, and others who are concerned with people who have hearing loss.

This book was released on 1972 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enlisted submariners with high-frequency hearing loss (ave. of 22, 45 and 60 decibels at 3, 4 and 6 kiloHertz, respectively) performed poorer than a normal-hearing control group by 6.2 percentage points on rather easy tests of speech intelligibility, and by 5 percentage points on rather difficult tests containing speech in background noise. The performance of the hearing-loss group, however, for the easier tests exceeded by 12.7 points that of another normal-hearing control group in which the hearing loss was simulated by filtering. The hearing-loss subjects may be experience have compensated to some extent in easier situations for their defect. This was not true for the more difficult situations. (Author).

Book Synopsis Speech Discrimination of Hearing-impaired Individuals to Noise by : Mark Ross
Download or read book Speech Discrimination of Hearing-impaired Individuals to Noise written by Mark Ross and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study evaluated the relationships of speech discrimination measures obtained in quiet and in noise with various distortion indexes with a group of subjects with sensorineural hearing loss. The results indicated that the most important factors associated with speech intelligibility were the extent and configuration of the hearing loss. The inter-relationships among DL tests for frequency and intensity, linear range measures, age, and pure-tone thresholds were examined. Comparisons were made with normal-hearing listeners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of monosyllabic word tests designed to measure discrimination for speech are available today.
