Book excerpt: The present study did not find evidence that discrepancies in family members' perceptions of family relations are related to adolescent depressive symptoms among chronically ill adolescents. However, multiple regression analyses, conducted separately by racial group, revealed that adolescent perception of family cohesion was the only significant predictor of adolescent depressive symptoms for both groups. Additionally, adolescent perception of family conflict was the only significant predictor of White American adolescent depressive symptoms. These findings suggest that adolescent perception of family cohesion may be an important factor in adolescent adjustment among African American and White American adolescents living with a chronic illness and that perceptions of family conflict may be an important factor in the occurrence of adolescent depressive symptoms among White American adolescents. These findings provide support for examining family relations and adolescent depressive symptoms separately by race as suggested by the Difference Model research approach.

Book excerpt: Many parents fear the time when their beautiful happy children will become unmanageable adolescents continually engaging in risky or destructive behaviour. Unfortunately, this view of adolescents is the focus of the media, even though it relates to just a small proportion of young people. As the large amount of research we report shows, most adolescents are responsible young people who care about their families and crave the support of their parents. It is also true, however, as much research indicates, that the quality of the relationship parents have with their adolescents is crucial to the wellbeing of those young people. We discuss the need for parents to set reasonable limits on their adolescents and to expect appropriate behavior. We also show, on the basis of research, that children who have experienced positive, caring relationships with their parents are more likely than other adolescents to behave responsibly. In other words, behavior in adolescence does not ‘come out of nowhere’ but builds on earlier experiences in the family. Because of the large amount of research reported in this volume, we expect that it will be useful to practitioners from a range of professions that are likely to focus on adolescents: social workers, youth leaders, welfare workers, religious leaders, psychologists and psychiatrists and contribute to a better understanding of young people and their development, and the importance of families to that development.

The purpose of this study was to assess the effects, of family financial strain on family relationship perceptions and adolescent depressed mood both cross-sectionally and prospectively. Structural equation modeling was utilized to elucidate family processes that were predictive of adolescent depressive mood. The cross-sectional results showed that family financial strain led to an increase in adolescents' depressive mood through an increase in parental depression and a decrease in nurturant parenting for father-daughter, mother-son, and mother-daughter dyads. For father-son dyads, fathers' depressed mood was directly related to adolescent sons' depressed mood. In father-daughter dyads family financial strain also directly led to a reduction in nurturant parenting.

Book excerpt: A qualitative research methodology was employed, using in-depth interviews to explore from families about their perceptions of the therapy experience. Three families participated in this research. One adolescent boy and one girl in each family with both their parents were interviewed separately. In the third family, the adolescent girl was away overseas and only the mother was interviewed. Interviews took place between one to three years post treatment in the homes of participants. Interviews were taped, then transcribed and data analysed for themes and differences. The participants reported positive experience about therapy. The adolescents dwell more on changes in their behaviour and symptom resolution while their parents tend to focus more on improved relationship with their adolescent.

Book excerpt: It is important to understand the development of depression, and how a family component to treatment affects early adolescent girls' depression given the association between depression and negative future outcomes. A potential vulnerability to depression is the cognitive triad, which encompasses beliefs about the self, world, and future and is shaped by early learning experiences. Research indicates that the vulnerability originates from parent-child relationships and family messages, which are important in the development of youth cognitive styles. Previous research also indicates that family variables are important factors to consider in the treatment of depression. The purpose of the current study was to expand previous research by examining the roles of perceived family messages and the cognitive triad in the development of depression for early adolescent girls. The study also explored whether parent gender differentiated how family messages affect girls' cognitions and depressive symptoms. The study evaluated how the addition of a parent training component to a school-based, group-administered CBT intervention affected change in the model's variables in comparison to group-administered CBT intervention alone and a monitoring control condition. Participants included early adolescent girls diagnosed with depression and caregivers in the parental treatment component. Girls were randomly assigned to a CBT, CBT+PT, or minimal contact control condition. Ratings of girls' perceptions of family messages, cognitions, and depressive symptoms were obtained at pre-treatment and post-treatment. Results from structural equation modeling indicated significant effects from perceived family messages to girls' cognitions. Further, girls' cognitions mediated the relation between perceived family messages and girls' depressive symptoms at post-treatment for participants within the CBT and monitoring conditions. No significant differences were evident between parent gender and perceived messages. Results indicated that the addition of a parent component to the CBT intervention did not significantly differ from the CBT intervention alone in its effects on the variable relations within the model at post-treatment. Supplemental analyses highlighted parent attendance as a significant factor, with larger effects from the family messages on girls' cognitions appearing when parents attended majority (six or more) of the eight parent training sessions. Implications, limitations, and areas for further research are discussed.
