Book excerpt: The purpose of this comparative study was to examine the effects of two foreign language teaching approaches--communicative language teaching and teaching proficiency through reading and storytelling--on motivation and proficiency for Spanish III students in high school. These two teaching approaches have gained prominence over the last couple of decades and no consensus exists between second language (L2) researchers and practitioners on which approach might be best to increase students' motivation to learn and to become proficient. One hundred and seventeen Spanish III students in high school studying with the TPRS or the CLT teaching approach, completed the LLOS-IEA Motivation Scale in order to collect L2 motivational data and took the Standards-Based Measurement of Proficiency test (STAMP 4S) to collect data on proficiency. The researcher used descriptive and parametric inferential statistics to examine mean scores differences on the variables between both approaches. Looking at the results of the analyses run for this study, the researcher observed that the TPRS teaching approach had statistically significant higher levels of L2 motivation for IM Accomplishment, IM Knowledge, and IM Stimulation ( p = .001), whereas the CLT approach had higher levels of proficiency in Reading (p = .001); Writing (p = .001); and Listening (p = .29).

Book excerpt: Abstract: The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) suggest that a high proficiency in the language is essential for all Spanish teachers. No matter what level of Spanish (SPN) a teacher teaches, the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines declare that the minimum level of proficiency for Spanish teachers should be advanced low, which sets the standards high. Most teacher preparation programs do not have a system in place to help non-native language instructors maintain and improve their language proficiency. With the growth of the Spanish speaking population in the U.S and the diversity of the Spanish Culture, teacher education programs need to ensure that teacher candidates are better equipped to face the increased demands of language proficiency. This two-phase (survey + case studies) study investigated both native and non-native high school Spanish teachers language practices outside and inside of the school setting such as their level of involvement in target language activities. Results suggest that NSTs and NNSTs had different needs in the areas of teacher education and professional development. While native teachers preferred to focus on improving their pedagogical knowledge, most non-native teachers sought additional classes and professional development opportunities designed to enhance their language proficiency. Survey results suggested that NNSTs had considerably less experience teaching upper level classes than NSTs. Many NNSTs felt that teaching only lower level Spanish classes affected their confidence and proficiency in the language. Several important implications for teacher educators and Spanish teachers emerged from this study, including the development of a fluent communication channel between foreign language and teacher education departments to ensure that Spanish teachers' proficiency development does not stop when they enter a teacher preparation program, the establishment of safe and effective learning Communities of Practice (COP) for Spanish teachers in which the target language is the sole language of the community, and the implementation of a rotation system in which teachers alternate in the teaching of lower and upper level classes. Recommendations for future research are also offered.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the effects of comprehensible visual input in the form of drawing on students’ self-efficacy toward learning Spanish as a second language in a classroom setting. The study also compared student test scores in classes receiving comprehensible visual input instruction with test scores of students in classes utilizing traditional second language instruction techniques. Participants for this research included 198 students in Grade 9 and Grade 10 enrolled in second year Spanish in a Catholic college preparatory high school. A 46 items Spanish Self-Efficacy Survey (SSES) was administered which included four scales: Progress, Observation Comparison, Social Feedback, and Physiological States. Participants also completed a machine scored 46 question commercially prepared standardized test. The majority of students (69%) were in Grade 10, and 56% across both grades were male. Three female Spanish classroom teachers were involved in the study. Two of the teachers are native Spanish speakers from Spain and Argentina. The third teachers studied Spanish in Spain where she acquired native like capability. There are between 45 and 60 years old and they all have over 10 years of experience teaching various levels of the language. Two teachers taught the control group, while the teacher-researcher taught the treatment group; each group consisted of 99 students. Literature on bilingualism revealed the benefits of speaking more than one language. However, in the United States, second language instruction is not federally mandated making learning a foreign language a low priority for students. Difficulty finding qualified and engaging foreign language teachers is a challenge for American iv schools, consequently, students who wish to learn a second language may not have the opportunity to do so in some jurisdictions. Participant’s responses on Likert scale items on the SSES and standardized test were also analyzed using of ANCOVAs to account for the effect of the covariant, pretest scores. The analysis showed gains on some items within the four scales of the SSES, and also showed gains in achievement on the standardized test. However, the gains were not statistically significant (p
