Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Modern sports require quick, powerful movements to be successful, and as a result anaerobic ability is of interest. A number of tests exist for the measurement of anaerobic parameters, but none have achieved a gold-standard status. The Wingate Anaerobic Test (WAT) has received widespread support and is among the most widely accepted (Bar-Or, 1987; Hoffman, Epstein, Einbinder, & Weinstein, 2000; Sands et al, 2004). The WAT is a cycle-based test however. Sprint-based field tests are more practical to administer and are more specific to the requirements of many sports, but the standards used are anecdotal, and while shown to be reliable (Moir, Button, Glaister, & Stone, 2004 ; Thomas, Plowman, & Looney, 2002), their validity has been questioned (Seiler et al, 1990). This study compares a test of four 40-yard sprints through measurement of blood lactate concentration generated by each test and power calculations.

This study was done in the summer of 1989, under contract with the University of North Carolina. The accuracy of using the time to pedal either 240, 270, or 300 M (at a resistance of 0.095 kp/kg of body weight) on a stationary ergometer as a predictor of mean power output from a standard WAP was examined. Forty-four healthy male volunteers participated in the study. Significant correlations were found between completion time and the standard WAP mean power output (r = -0.55 to -0.57); however, extensive predictive error (aprox. 15%), was found to exist when the bivariate regressions from the correlation analyses were used to estimate mean power output. Multiple regression analysis, however, indicated that use of time to completion, and exercise resistance setting as independent variables resulted in highly significant multiple R values (0.98 to 0.99), and relatively accurate predictive capability (approx. 3% error).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wingate Anaerobic Test was designed more than 30 years ago and is one of the reference tests for making assessments related to ATP/PCr and Glycolytic metabolisms. The test consists of a 30-second all out test performed on a cyclo-ergometer. Perhaps due to the evolution of the cyclo-ergometers used to carry out the test, or because it was initially designed with a sedentary population and has been used equally by sportsmen and women of all levels and ages, the original protocol has undergone some variations. Some research even shows the importance of modifying this initial protocol depending on what we want to assess and the population we are analyzing. The objective of this book is to make the test protocol well known, what it aims to measure and its characteristics, but above all to serve as an aid for its correct application, taking into account all the variables that can influence the results of the test.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the resistance settings which elicit maximal values of power output (PO) values during performance of the Wingate Test (WT). Nineteen male subjects performed multiple WT in a random order at resistance settings ranging from 0.055 to 0.115 kg/kg BW. Tests were carried out on a Monark cycle ergometer modified to permit instantaneous application of resistance. Revolutions were determined by a computer interfaced frequency counter. The mean resistance settings eliciting the highest peak power (PPO) and mean power (MPO) outputs were 0.096 and 0.094 kg/kg BW, respectively (average setting of 0.095 kg/kg BW). Both PPO and MPO were significantly higher (15.5% and 13.0%, respectively) using a resistance setting of 0.095 compared to the Wingate setting of 0.075 kg/kg BW. The test-retest reliability for PPO and MPO ranged between 0.91 and 0.93 at both resistance settings. Body weight, % body fat and thigh volume did not significantly estimate the individual resistance settings eliciting maximal PO's. The data suggest that resistance be assigned according to the subjects BW but consideration be given to increasing this resistance from that presently used in various laboratories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the differences in anaerobic power between males and females and the contribution of anthropometric variables in accounting for these differences. Eighteen female and nineteen male subjects performed the Wingate test as a measure of anaerobic power (AnP). Each subject pedalled maximally for 30s against a resistance of 4.41 joules/pedal revolution/kg body weight on a modified Monark ergometer which allowed instantaneous application of resistance. Revolutions were determined by a computer interfaced frequency counter. Thigh volume (TV) by water displacement, lean body mass (LBM) from skinfolds and body weight (BW) were used as anthropometric variables. Absolute AnP of males was significantly higher than females, as were pedal revolutions. The difference between genders decreased when power was expressed in terms of TV, BW and LBM, in that order. These data reveal that a larger portion of the between gender variation compared to the within gender variation in AnP can be accounted for by the anthropometric variables. However, a significant portion remains that must be explained by the individual muscles' potential for glycolytic energy production. Originator supplied keywords include: Anaerobic power, Wingate test, Anthropometry, Gender differences.

Book excerpt: The objectives of this study were to examine the relationships between two recently developed laboratory tests of anaerobic power (ANP) and to compare these tests to other measures of ANP. Fifteen male subjects, aged 20-34 years, performed: a 30-s maximal cycle ergometer test (Wingate test), a 60-s isokinetic knee extension test (isokinetic endurance test), a 50-m sprint, a 200-m sprint, and the Margaria stair-climb test. Significant correlations ranging from 0.52-0.76 were found between the Wingate and isokinetic endurance tests for peak and mean values of power and torque, respectively. Indices from both these tests also correlated significantly with the other tests of AnP. The best single index was mean power from the Wingate test, which had correlations of -0.79, -0.82, and 0.74 with the 50-m and 200-m sprint times and the Margaria test, respectively. The data suggest that both the Wingate and isokinetic endurance tests represent valid laboratory tests for evaluating high-intensity, short-term exercise in which the muscle is primarily dependent upon anaerobic processes for energy release. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of two methodologies (start method and sprocket size) of the Wingate Anaerobic Test (WAnT) on peak power (PP) and mean power (MP). Twenty power-trained males (24.6 ℗ł 4.5 years; 25.4 ℗ł 2.5 BMI) with the same exercise routine for the past 4 months performed, in a randomized order, four WAnT with different combinations of start method, flying (FLY) or stationary (STA), and front sprocket size, 62-tooth sprocket (S-62) or 85-tooth sprocket (S-85), using the Velotron Racermate℗ʼ. The results showed main effects for start method (p 0.001; ES 0.753) and sprocket size (p 0.001; ES 0.69) for PP and MP, respectively. For PP, significantly (p 0.001) higher mean differences were shown for both FLYs (14.4 w/kg) while MP showed significant (p 0.01) increases for S-85 in combination with the FLY (10.9 W/kg) and for S-85 in combination with the STA (9.7 W/kg). Pearson correlation (r) revealed no significant relationship between same start methods, FLY (p 0.05; r = 0.227) or STA (p 0.05; r = -0.132), and same sprocket size, S-62 (p 0.05; r = -0.179), or S-85 (p 0.05; r = 0.240). In conclusion, the findings of this study showed that FLY start and S-85 elicited higher means for PP and MP, respectively. Furthermore, Velotron with S-85 should not be interchangeably used with the S-62 model for power outputs; results suggest that different sprockets favored subjects differently, and no relationship can be established for the two methods. FLY start is suggested as a more effective method to reach elevated PP.
