Book excerpt: "TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 616: Multimodal Level of Service Analysis for Urban Streets explores a method for assessing how well an urban street serves the needs of all of its users. The method for evaluating the multimodal level of service (MMLOS) estimates the auto, bus, bicycle, and pedestrian level of service on an urban street using a combination of readily available data and data normally gathered by an agency to assess auto and transit level of service. The MMLOS user's guide was published as NCHRP Web-Only Document 128"--Publisher's description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public Transportation Quality of Service: Factors, Models, and Applications is the first book to help researchers better understand the contributing factors that can improve public transportation perception among users. The book compiles in one place metrics currently dispersed in journal articles, government publications and book chapters. It critically analyzes currently available modeling methodologies such as the Ordered Logit/Probit model and Models of Structural Equations, highlighting their advantages and disadvantages. The book addresses models of desired quality, including the views of users and non-users, discussing the gap between desired and perceived quality. The book also examines data mining approaches such as decision trees and neural networks, showing how to involve the public in the decision-making process to create policies that encourage public transport demand. Measuring passenger’s views on public transportation is of critical concern to promote wider transit use in cities around the world. Includes insights from both theoretical and practical points of view for both researchers and practitioners Features case studies in each chapter that apply models discussed Helps readers develop and design their own studies for measuring quality of service Shows how to include perceived quality in contracts Provides access to the survey formulas and data to better enable implementation of models

It was introduced into China market and achieved speedy development in the last decade. Until now, more than 20 cities have already established their own BRT system and put into operation. However, public transport operators in China cities do not give enough attention to the quality of service provided by the BRT system. As a consequence, lack of attraction is one of the major barriers for BRT system widely development. In this situation, this study established a framework for BRT service quality analysis and applied it in Hefei BRT Route 1. This framework integrates both objective and subjective scenario. In subjective scenario, a customer satisfaction survey is conducted for BRT passengers. In the survey, customers' satisfaction levels towards different aspects of BRT service and their travel characteristics are collected. With the results of data analysis, objective measurement is followed. Objective measurement focuses on service performance measurement. Such measurement is based on criteria for public transit level of service. Combining the results of the customer satisfaction survey and site observation, a comprehensive assessment of a transit system's quality of service can be conducted. By analyzing the BRT system' service quality, improvement recommendations to current BRT system in terms of BRT running way, BRT station, BRT vehicle and BRT operation system are proposed. Additionally, for better BRT service evaluation, special criteria for level of BRT service are required in future research. Subjects: Bus rapid transit - China - Hefei Shi

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing a collection of research works on the continuing requirement for better urban transport systems, this volume consists of papers presented at the 24th International Conference on Urban Transport and the Environment. The need for better urban transport systems and for a healthier environment has resulted in a wide range of research originating from many different countries. These studies highlight the importance of innovative systems, new approaches and original ideas, which need to be thoroughly tested and critically evaluated before they can be implemented in practice. Moreover, there is a growing need for integration with telecommunications systems and IT applications in order to improve safety, security and efficiency. This book also addresses the need to solve important pollution problems associated with urban transport in order to achieve a healthier environment. The variety of topics covered in this volume reflects the complex interaction of the urban transport systems with their environment and the need to establish integrated strategies. The aim is to arrive at optimal socio-economic solutions while reducing the negative environmental impacts of current transportation systems.
