This book was released on 1984 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kerala does not conform to the socioeconomic development pattern normally associated with a rapid fertility decline. This report attempts to determine the causes of the decline that Kerala is experiencing. Given that the background description is not inaccurate, attention is focused upon social, cultural, and political characteristics that may be relevant. Three of these seem more important than others: land reform, political awareness, and education. Extensive land reform has not only redistibuted the wealth, but has also contributed to the decline of the matriarchal systems; every aspect of life in Kerala is politicized, facilitating better delivery of government services; and high educational attainment has been accompanied by high unemployment among the educated. All these factors seem to have had an effect on the declining fertility rate; family planning programs seem to have been insignificant.

Book Synopsis Reducing Fertility in Developing Countries by : Rodolfo A. Bulatao
Download or read book Reducing Fertility in Developing Countries written by Rodolfo A. Bulatao and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reviews the determinants of fertility and attempts to extract conclusions that are relevant for fertility reduction policies in developing countries. In the first tier of fertility determinants, socioeconomic development has a decisive effect in lowering fertility in the long run. In the short run, however, and for specific households, the effects are much more tangled. Higher income, for instance, allows households to afford more children, but nevertheless often reduces fertility because of its links to other factors like education. Education, especially for women, fairly reliably reduces fertility, though its effect may take years to appear. Improved health and lower mortality also contribute to lower fertility, through both biological and behavioral channels. The effect of female employment, in contrast, is uncertain and undependable. Urban residence has a pervasive effect in reducing fertility, though much of this is attributable to education and better health. Particular improvements in welfare can therefore be expected to lead to lower fertility, but the effects are neither uniform nor immediate. Development is essential for fertility transition to run its full course.
Book Synopsis Religion and Fertility by : Joseph Chamie
Download or read book Religion and Fertility written by Joseph Chamie and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1981-04-30 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a critical investigation into the relationship between religious affiliation, on the one hand, and fertility, family size preferences and family planning behaviour, on the other. Dr Chamie works from a set of unique data: the 1971 Fertility and Family Planning Survey in Lebanon. This survey is not only a national study of Lebanese fertility but also a large-scale survey (2,800 people) offering the opportunity to study Arab Christian-Muslim differentials. Lebanon's demographic situation has far greater scientific and practical importance than might be supposed from its relatively small population. From observing the important religious communities at different stages of social and economic development, Dr Chamie has thus been able to analyse the interacting effects of religion and socio-economic development on reproductive behaviour.
