Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if a difference existed between TCAP scores of students who used the Accelerated Reader (AR) program and students who used Sustained Silent Reading strategy (SSR) as measured by the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP). The variables of grade level (6th, 7th, and 8th), gender, and socioeconomic status (free- or reduced- price meals program) were considered. The population consisted of 108 6th graders who attended a Cocke County school or a McMinn County school in Tennessee. Data were obtained from the TCAP for 3 consecutive years beginning in 2004-2005 for students who completed the tests all 3 years. A t test for independent samples and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to determine if there was a difference on associations and interactions between variables. The researcherâs investigation of the reading achievement of students who used Accelerated Reader and those who used Sustained Silent Reading should assist educators in planning for supplemental reading instruction. The information gathered from this research might be beneficial to other school systems when determining which method of reading instruction to use to increase students' reading achievement. The findings indicated the students who used the Accelerated Reader program had an increase in reading-language arts scale scores for 3 consecutive years. The findings of this study also revealed that gender had no significance on student achievement for 6th graders. The findings did indicate a significant interaction between gender and type of program used during 7th and 8th grades. Females who used the Accelerated Reader program outscored males who used the program. The findings of this study also determined that socioeconomic status had no association with TCAP scores during the 6th, 7th, or 8th grades.

The purpose of this study was to examine the correlation between reading and writing. The research was guided b the following question: Is there a statistically significant correlation between the Accelerated reader Program scores and the scores received by fifth grade students on the Alabama Direct Assessment of Writing? The null hypothesis stated that there is not a statistically significant correlation in the scores of fifth grade students on the Alabama Direct Assessment Writing when the Accelerated Reader Program. Data was analyzed using a Pearson-r for two independent sample means. The .05 level of significance was accepted. The instruments used in this study were the Accelerated Reader Program (AR) and the Alabama Direct Assessment of Writing (ADAW) for fifth grade. There were approximately 70 students from the 2007-2008 school years who were taught using the AR program. These students also were examined using the ADAW. The researcher used random sampling to select 20 students from the data. Based on the findings, the null hypothesis was not rejected. So the researcher concluded that there is no correlation between the Accelerated Reader program and Alabama Direct Assessment of Writing. This chapter contains a summary, conclusions from the findings, and recommendations for practice and further research.

Schools that use annual standardized test scores to determine students’ academic deficiencies, and thereby their need for intervention, only receive these score reports once per year, often several weeks or months after the students have been assessed. The purpose of this correlational analysis of reading achievement was to compare students’ performance on the EasyCBM progress monitoring tool to students’ performance on the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program for third, fourth, and fifth grade students at a suburban elementary school in southeast Tennessee. Two theories framed this study: Vygotsky’s zone of proximal development and Dweck’s growth mindset theory. The central research question in this study was: Is there a relationship between students’ EasyCBM Passage Reading Fluency assessment score and their English Language Arts score on the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP)? The participants were drawn from a convenience sample of third through fifth graders who participated in both May 2019 EasyCBM Passage Reading Fluency assessments and the 2019 summative TCAP in English Language Arts. Archival data from these two assessments were gathered and analyzed to determine a possible relationship. Correlation results found statistically significant correlations between EasyCBM Passage Reading Fluency scores and TCAP English Language Arts scores for each individual grade level analyzed as well as overall.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine how giving students additional silent reading time during class impacted their overall reading comprehension scores. Reading is a part of all language arts classrooms, but the amount of reading students actually do and the strategies teachers use to improve reading comprehension vary widely. This study used a convenience sample that consisted of two similar 7th grade English language arts classrooms, both taught by the same teacher. One class was the treatment group and received the treatment of extra silent reading time each week, while the control class did not. All other curriculum remained the same. A quantitative analysis was used to gather data from the treatment group and control group through a pre-test, post-test, and follow-up test. The comprehension scores of the two groups were compared overall, and were broken down by gender and student achievement levels. Results showed no improvement for either group on the post-test, but there was significant improvement for the treatment group on the follow-up test. There were no significant differences between genders or high and low achieving students.

Book excerpt: Schools in the United States have been using the Accelerated Reader (AR) program since the mid-1980s. A search of the literature related to the effectiveness of the AR program revealed that many of the studies were conducted more than a decade ago, and a large number of those studies failed to utilize a control group to provide comparative data. Researchers and educators have examined the use of the AR program, whose parent company is Renaissance Learning, for more than 20 years, yet there is still little definitive data on whether the system positively affects student reading comprehension and motivation to read. This causal-comparative design, in the form of an ex post facto study, examined two groups of fifth-grade students to determine if the addition of AR showed statistically significant effects on their reading comprehension. Data were gathered from both an experimental and a control group; the control group utilized the school system's literacy plan for reading instruction, while the experimental group utilized the literacy plan along with mandatory use of AR. Independent t-tests were used to determine if the treatment (AR) had any effect on reading comprehension by group or by gender. The results from the independent t-tests showed no statistically significant effect for reading method by group and no statistically significant effect for gender by group.

Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study was to find if there is a significant difference in the end of the year Communication Arts scores of students who participate in Silent Sustained Reading compared to students who did not participate in Silent Sustained Reading. Demands of No Child Left Behind, increases a mandated curriculum, and the National Reading Panel's statement that silent reading is ineffective has created controversy. This pilot study investigates the impact of independent reading on the reading achievement of a small group of students with special needs. They all received services in Communication Arts and their independent reading levels were below average (lower elementary grade level). The question investigated in this research study was: Does participating in independent reading increase student's reading achievement?"--portion of abstract

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research is to determine a level of correlation between the use of accelerated reader and the amount of reading growth of a student in one school year. Research conducted on a 4th and 5th grade combination class of high achieving students was the sample of this research. To determine the level of correlation, STAR assessment was used and comparison was made to beginning and end results. Growth was measured in two areas: independent reading level and Grade level equivalency. In this research, the average grade level equivalency growth exceeded one year as well as the independent reading level exceeded one level. The amount of words read by individual students was also recorded by Accelerated Reader and compared to the growth made in the school year. A degree of growth was recorded in all students sampled and varied as compared to the amount of words read in the school year.

Book excerpt: This study investigated the relationships between value-added achievement in Tennessee public schools that include grades one through five and selected independent variables. The schools' use of the reading practice and monitoring software known as Accelerated Reader (AR) was of particular interest, as considerable research has suggested its effectiveness in raising achievement in reading and other subjects. Data were (1) the dependent variables, cumulative three-year average (1999, 2000, and 2001) Tennessee Value-Added Assessment scores in reading, language, math, science, and social studies; (2) independent variables school enrollment, per pupil annual expenditure for the system, percentage of students in the school eligible for free or reduced price meals, and percentage of minority students in the school; and (3) whether and to what extent AR had been purchased and implemented at each school since August1, 1999. Four levels of AR ownership/implementation were classified as (1) ownership without any "model classrooms," (2) having one or two model classrooms, (3) having three or more model classrooms, or (4) being certified as a "model school." Multiple regression analysis was used to search for statistically significant relationships between the independent demographic variables and AR use and the dependent variables of value-added achievement at the .05 level of significance, in the hope that a useful model could be designed for predicting value-added achievement from AR use, school enrollment, per pupil expenditure, free or reduced-price meal eligibility, and minority enrollment. Analysis of the data uncovered almost no significant relationships or school-level effects. In no instance was AR implementation a significant factor in relation to value-added achievement at the school level. While no useful regression model was developed from this study, one significant finding was that, in schools ending at grade six, school enrollment and especially minority enrollment are negatively correlated with math achievement.

Two of the four classrooms were traditional classes where paper and pencil methods were those most utilized for instructional purposes. Of these two classrooms, one teacher used Accelerated Reader extensively and with fidelity and the other did not use the program at all. The other two classrooms were part of the district's FLiP initiative where each student had their own laptop. Of these two classrooms, one teacher extensively used Accelerated Reader and one teacher did not. The purpose was to determine if Accelerated Reader should continue to be funded by the district. This would be determined through how extensively teachers used the program, and how using the program translated to student test scores and reading levels."--[portion of abstract].

This book was released on 2016 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Student achievement in reading comprehension has been an important topic for the past several years due to the importance of reading in education. School districts in South Carolina have had enormous amounts of pressure put on them to increase student reading comprehension through the implementation of SLOs and the Read to Succeed initiative. The School District of Pickens County has chosen to use the Accelerated Reader program in an attempt to help boost student reading comprehension. The quasi-experimental design was used during the quantitative research process to determine the effect of Accelerated Reader on student reading comprehension and student achievement. The measuring instrument used was student MAP test data from the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 school years. Overall RIT scores of students were compared during the Fall, Winter, and Spring administrations of MAP during both school years. The results of the study showed an increase in overall RIT for both the experimental and control groups, but there was no significant increase in student reading comprehension with students systematically exposed to Accelerated Reader and students that were not. Appended is: Request to Complete Project.
