Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Common-Sense View of the Books of the Old Testament Rufus phineas stebbins was born at South Wilbraham, Mass., March 3, 1810. He grew up under the discipline of poverty and hard work. By his unaided efforts, - teaching school in the winter, toiling on the farm during vacations, he fitted himself for college and paid his expenses while there, graduating at Amherst in 1834. He had been reared under the influence of Methodism, his mother being a devoted member of that church; and up to the time of his entering college he had hardly known of any other faith. Some work by Dr. Charming which fell into his hands led him to a care ful reading of the Bible with reference to its theological teachings; and the result of a long and patient study was the acceptance of Unitarian views, to the preaching of which he then consecrated his life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Old Testament Studies The better view, and the common sense view would seem to be that the religion of the beginning was pure and uncorrupted and of divine origin. When men apostatized from the true faith, the process was gradual, and they carried with them divinely appointed ordinances, modifying and corrupting them in a purely naturalistic way, until most pagan practices, and their teachings also, are but travesties of the good and the true. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Testament From the Modern Point of View If we look at the Old Testament from the modern point of view, we see the same collection of sacred writings which our fathers in the Christian Church have long held in high veneration; but we see them as they did not and could not. We may h0pe that we are of the same spirit as they, but we must not forego the vantage point of our many centuries of progress. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Books of the Old Testament Nearly all Old Testament scholars in Germany, England, and America, who have been trained in the universities and are not adherents of the Roman Catholic faith, are agreed as to the main results which have been achieved by careful investigations carried on during the nineteenth century, though there are necessarily differences of opinion upon secondary details. It is important that the reader should realise the immense gulf which separates the modern physical conditions of book-making, since the discovery of printing, from the ancient conditions when all records were laboriously copied by hand upon such rough materials as skins or papyrus and were preserved in rolls. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Testament Revision: A Handbook for English Readers It seems desirable, in view of the approaching publication of the Revised Version of the Old Testament, to furnish, in popular form, some information on interesting and important points connected with that portion of Scripture. This I have endeavoured to do in the following little volume. From the nature of the case, this work has been constructed on totally different lines from my "Companion to the Revised Version of the New Testament." Book excerpt: Hidden in Plain View: Undesigned Coincidences in the Gospels and Acts revives an argument for the historical reliability of the New Testament that has been largely neglected for more than a hundred years. An undesigned coincidence is an apparently casual, yet puzzle-like -fit- between two or more texts, and its best explanation is that the authors knew the truth about the events they describe or allude to. Connections of this kind among passages in the Gospels, as well as between Acts and the Pauline epistles, give us reason to believe that these documents came from honest eyewitness sources, people -in the know- about the events they relate. Supported by careful research yet accessibly written, Hidden in Plain View provides solid evidence that all Christians can use to defend the Scriptures and the truth of Christianity.

Book excerpt: We tend to look to the New Testament to tell us about Jesus, yet it was the Old Testament about which Jesus said, “the Scriptures point to me!” In The One Year Book of Discovering Jesus in the Old Testament, Bible teacher Nancy Guthrie takes readers from Genesis through Malachi, shining the light of Christ on the promise of a descendent who will put an end to the curse of sin; the story of a father who offers up his son as a sacrifice; the symbol of a temple where people can meet with God; the prophecy of a servant who will suffer; the person of a king who will rule with righteousness—and so much more. Day by day throughout the year, readers will see the beauty of Christ in fresh new ways, creating a deeper understanding and appreciation for who Jesus is and what he accomplished through his Cross and Resurrection.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Abiding Value of the Old Testament Between the God of the Old Testament and the God of the New, extreme Views have prevailed among men as to whether the Old Testament is really an essential part of Christianity. Some are disposed to cut the New Tes tament aloof from the Hebrew Scrip tures altogether, because, as they claim, Christianity can live on quite as well without them. Others regard the Old Testament as the millstone about the neck of Christianity, a stumbling-block to Christians as much as the Cross is to the Jews. While others, who are not so explicitly antagonistic in their atti. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
