Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commentary on St. Paul's Second Epistle to the Thessalonians Under its modern name of Salonika, Thessalonica, owing to the great war, has become far more widely known than it was previously. Thousands of persons who had hitherto scarcely heard of such a place, and certainly had very vague ideas as to its geographical position, now know accurately where to find it in the map and are aware of its importance with regard to its principal surroundings. But beyond this fact of its having become a very important city, both from a military and from a political point of view, we are in no better position for understanding the condition of the place at the time when a portion of its inhabitants were a community of the deepest interest to St. Paul and multitudes of other Christians. Nor are we likely to be in a better position for so doing when the war is over. On the contrary, we shall probably find that some of the features which a few years ago were not so very different from what they may have been in his day have been either entirely obliterated or very seriously transformed and disfigured. It is true that the war has added rather considerably to our knowledge of the archaeology of the immediate neighbourhood. Some of those who have been obliged through recent events to take up their abode there for a time have used this opportunity for making explorations in the interests of antiquarian research; and their labours have had considerable results. We are now learning a good deal more about the early history of this interesting tract of country. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures Chiefly Expository on St. Paul's First and Second Epistles to the Thessalonians: With Notes and Illustrations Christian centuries. It is the structure still rising which every age and countless students have combined to rear. I have made use of most of the commentaries on these Epistles, which English and German theological literature supplies, as well as such side-aids as were within my reach. I trust, however, it will be ap parent that I have tried to subject the course of the apostle's thought to the scrutiny of an independent judgment. I feel it needful to add, that while these Lectures profess to supply in their own way a commentary, the commentary is in no sense scientific or complete. Many questions of historical and theological and critical interest have been only partially discussed. Even such questions as are prominent in these Epistles have been discussed not in all their aspects, but only in the particular aspects in which they there present themselves. I have carefully refrained from going beyond this. Personally, indeed, I feel most attracted to whatever in these Epistles throws light upon the character of the apostle and the varied duties of the Christian life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commentary on St. Paul's: Epistle to the Galatians This historic light on St. Paul and his surroundings, supported as it is by the united testimony of the writers of the early Church, affords evidence which in all ages has assured all students, even those who have doubted the authorship of other Epistles attributed to him, that at least these four Epistles are from the pen of the Great Apostle. This certainty of authorship gives to these Epistles a special value, even amid the other Epistles bearing St. Paul's name and to those who confidently accept them all as genuine. In harmony with this mutual relation of the Epistles, the three volumes in which I have annotated them form one com plete work. I have endeavoured, by tracing the line of thought of these Epistles and by comparing them each with the others and with the Book of Acts, to reproduce the thought andthe movements and surroundings of the Apostle of the Gentiles at the noonday of his career. This reproduction I hope to supplement by another volume expounding the profound Epistles written during the seclusion of his first long imprisonment, viz. Those to the Ephesians, Philippians, Colos sians, and Philemon: by a fifth volume comprising both his two earliest and his three latest extant Epistles, viz. Those written during his second missionary tour, to the newly-founded Church at Thessalonica, and those written, as I hope to prove, after his release from his first imprisonment and to conclude the series by a volume expounding St. Paul's teaching as a whole, com paring it with that of the other writers of the New Testament, and tracing the manifold teaching of these various writers to its one immediate source in the Gospel proclaimed by Christ and to its ultimate source in the Eternal Purpose of God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Paul's Epistles to the Thessalonians: With a Critical and Grammatical Commentary, and a Revised Translation If I may venture to assume that this is really the case, I cannot help feeling that it is to be attributed not only to increased experience, but also to the cautious but somewhat freer admixture of exegesis which two of the three Epistles' contained in the volume seemed more especially to require. This slight modification, and so to say dilution, of the critical and grammatical severity which distinguished the earlier parts of the work has been continued in the present volume, but it has been done both watchfully and cautiously, and will be really seen more in the way of slight addition than in actual change. Time and experience both seem to show that the system of interpretation that I have been enabled to pursue is substantially sound, that plain and patient accu racy in detail does in most cases lead to hopeful results, and serves not unfrequently to guide us to far loftier and more ennobling views of the Word of Life than such an unpre tending method might at first prepare us to expect.
